To you, in a great measure, I am indebted for early religious impressions especially to your blameless life and beautiful example do I owe my first conceptions of the excellence of virtue and the bliss of connubial life. Being your first-born, I had the op- portunity of witnessing a long life of affection between you and my now sainted father, whose memory to me is like pre- cious ointment ; and it affords me pleasure to record, now that you are four-score and four, that I have no remembrance of an unkind expression between my revered parents, but, on the contrary, words and acts of mutual respect and genuine love. We were not born in the Methodist Church, but in an- other branch of the great family of Christ ; yet through the instrumentality of the Methodists we were brought to a knowledge of sin and led to Jesus, who gave us repentance and remission. It was a happy day when you and my father and your eldest son all together united with the Meth- odist Episcopal Church. Since tfrat, you have lived to see (3) 4 DEDICATION. your husband, three sons, two grandsons, a son-in-law, and two grandsons, by marriage, Methodist preachers. More than this : .you have a large posterity, all of whom, this day, are members of the Methodist Church. Of more than ninety souls of your own posterity and those connected therewith by marriage, perhaps there is not more than one who is not in the same Church with yourself. It is true, a portion of your family have crossed the flood and are now in the city of God, but still " One family we dwell in him, One Church above, beneath, Though now divided by the stream, The narrow stream of death." May your few remaining days, my beloved mother, be calm and tranquil, and your last moments joyful and triumphant, and when the great day shall come, may you, with your long train of posterity, stand on the right hand, and say, with joy, "Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me !" Your affectionate son, J. B. McFerein. July, 1869. INTRODUCTION. It was Dr. Chalmers, the great Scotch preacher, I believe, who said, "Methodism is Christianity in earnest" Such a Christianity, of course, has a history, and that his- tory should be written. No man who is impartial in judg- ment, or unprejudiced in feeling, will doubt that John Wesley, under God, projected a great work when he deter- mined to constitute his Societies in America an independent Church. The result has fully verified the wisdom of the measure. American Methodism is without a parallel in modern times. Within the space of one hundred years, the original Society, numbering a few persons, has multiplied into two millions, besides the myriads who have died in the faith. The progress of the Church in Sunday-schools, in Church-literature, in schools and colleges, in church-archi- tecture, and its great missionary enterprises, has in a meas- ure been equal to the increase of numbers. The Methodist Church has become a great moral power in the land ; its influence is felt in all departments of society ; every Prot- estant Church in America recognizes it as a grand wing of the mighty army of the living God. In the South-west the Methodists have been very successful ; and in no portion of O INTRODUCTION. the Valley of the Mississippi have they been more prosper- ous than in Tennessee. The Methodist Church is by far the largest in the State. Its ministers rank with the most intel- lectual and popular preachers of the land, and its member- ship are inferior to none in all the relations of life. Besides, Tennessee has sent forth to other States many flaming heralds of the cross ; its sons are in every part of the South and South-west, and its laymen have gone to new countries and aided in building up and extending the cause of Christ in "the regions beyond." It has been the cherished purpose of the author for years to perform the task he has now undertaken, but until recently the opportunity seemed to be unfavorable. By the blessing of God, he has been able to complete the first volume, which, God willing, will soon be followed by others. He now submits the result of his labors to a generous Christian public, praying the blessing of God upon the reader and upon the Church that he has served from his youth. The author is indebted to several writers who have con- tributed much to the history of early times in Tennessee. Some of these prepared matter at his special request.     Presiding Bishop Supervisor, Women’s Missionary Society Grace and Peace to the African Methodist Episcopal Church in this Bicentennial Year! Dr. Susan and I have been honored to serve the Thirteenth Episcopal District in this quadrennium. We are grateful for the love and cooperation of the people who helped to make our efforts fruitful and our burdens light. Like many places throughout our Zion, the 13th District is a place of significant demographic and ecclesiastical shifts. Some rural places have found a stable equilibrium, but most suffer from the effects of aging and shrinking populations. Young people move away, and local economies change. Older urban populations also are in the midst of transitions which often leave historical denominational strongholds abandoned in areas which are no longer fertile for the stronger ministries we offer. Changing locations and re-tooling our ministries require tremendous investments of analysis and adaptation. This comes at a time when the general population finds less interest in mainline denominations. Nevertheless, we are beginning to address these challenges, and we thank God for insight and direction. We appreciate the 13th District for stepping out in new directions and allowing us to experiment with innovative approaches to denominational ministry. While many of these initiatives are still maturing, we are pleased with some of the initial results. Annual Conference and District meetings are shorter to accommodate economic realities and those with secular employment. We have minimized the receiving of offerings in District and Annual Conference meetings. Supporting the work through reports from church has afforded greater Efficiency and Accountability. It has also given us an opportunity to encourage the support of the local church.

    Traces of a Forgotten Church Exploring the historical context behind Andrew‟s Chapel at Ames Plantation Andrew Grissom 2011 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies Introduction Spanning over eighteen thousand acres of property between Fayette and Hardeman counties in West Tennessee, Ames Plantation contains numerous Native American villages and Antebellum plantation sites, which the Rhodes Archaeology Field School continues to explore each summer.1 In the 2011 season, a team of students, faculty, and staff began an excavation on a site where a building known as Andrew‟s Chapel once stood. In 1847 a group of trustees established the structure as a place of worship for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South denomination.2 The oral tradition of the area indicates that the church burned down shortly before 1900, and a few gravestones in a cemetery remain as the only visible evidence of the church community. During the 2011 excavation, our team uncovered large amounts of burned brick and glass, as well as a variety of other artifacts in the area. However, due to time constraints and commitment to other projects, the excavation of the Andrew‟s Chapel site remains unfinished. In the years leading up to the inception of Andrew‟s Chapel, Protestantism in the United States experienced a period of religious revival known as the “Second Great Awakening.” This movement popularized the notion of a more personal relationship with the divine in the religious experience of the lay population.     History of the Tennessee Conference (UMC) Today’s Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church is the merger of more than fourteen conferences and seven denominations. Geographically comprising 42 mid-state counties, it is bounded on the west by the Tennessee River and on the east by the Cumberland Plateau. In 2014, 119,000 persons were mem- bers in more than 600 local churches, with 48,000 persons worshiping God each Sunday. Historical Growth of the Tennessee Conference Initially formed as the Western Conference of the Methodist Epis- copal Church in 1800, the Tennessee Conference consisted of all lands west of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas. The Western Confer- ence was divided in 1812 into the Ohio (the territory north of the Ohio River) and Tennessee (lands south of the Ohio River) Conferences. The rapid growth of Methodism on the frontier, combined with the west- ward movement of an increasingly mobile nation, led to multiple sub- divisions of the Tennessee Confer- ence—Illinois (1816), Indiana (1816), Arkansas (1816), Missouri (1816), Louisiana (1816), Mississip- pi (1816), Kentucky (1820), Holston (1824), Memphis (1840), and North Map shows the “spin-off” of other annual conferences Alabama (1870). of the Methodist Episcopal Church from 1812 – 1870. Bishops Beginning with William McKendree (1808), 26 Tennessee Conference clergy have become bishops in The United Methodist Church and its predecessor denom- inations. From the Archives Elbert Russell was a New Testament scholar recruited from Swarthmore by Dean Emund D. Soper to teach biblical interpretation at Duke’s new School of Religion. Russell arrived in the spring of 1926, just months before the first class of 18 students began classes that September. A Quaker and steadfast pacifist, Russell followed Soper as dean and served from 1928 until 1940. Russell was the first of several faculty who taught a graduate-level class for ministers at N.C. College for Negroes (now N.C. Central University). In 1929, Russell had advocated adding a Jewish faculty member: The Divinity School hired Rabbi Judah Goldin during World War II. — Robert F.
