Ice Hockey Equipment
The following is a list of hockey gear required for all hockey programs. The items are listed in the order in which you would put them on when getting dressed:
Velcro Shorts with Jockstrap or Ladies' pelvic protector (Jill) o A pair of shorts with 4 patches of Velcro to attach to the hockey socks to. They also have the protector sewn into the shorts. You may use “garter” style straps or tape to hold socks, but must use a jock strap/pelvic protector. Hockey Socks o Pair of large hockey socks that go over the shin pads o Attach the hockey socks to the Velcro on the front and back side of the shorts (or use garter straps or tape). Hockey pants o Incorporates thigh, pelvic, hip and tailbone pads Ice skates o Incorporate a rigid shell, often reinforced with metal mesh to prevent a skate blade cutting through. Unlike figure skates, hockey skates have a rounded heel and no toe picks as these can be dangerous in a "pile-up". o Skates should be 1-2 sizes smaller than your shoe size and should be laced-up tightly! Shin guards o Incorporating a kneepad as well, the shin guard has a hard shell in front to protect against pucks, but usually has little or no protection on the calf. o Pull the socks up above your knees and place the shin guards on, then pull the socks back down over them. Shin guards should be sitting on top of the tongue of your skate. Shoulder pads o Also includes torso and spine protection from flying pucks and most collisions. Elbow pads o Provides forearm and triceps protection against pucks in addition to a reinforced elbow cup. Hockey Jersey o A little loose is better than tight Helmet combo o Composed of a helmet with strap and a face cage. Must be HECC certified. Mouth Guard o Many options exist from standard plastic guards to custom-moldable compounds that make speaking easier. Mouthpieces need to be colored. Neck guard o Helps prevent injury from skates, sticks and pucks to the neck and throat. Hockey gloves o Protects the hands; player's gloves are constructed with a very thin palm and fingers while providing substantially more padding to the outside of the hands; also reinforces the thumb to prevent it bending backwards. Hockey stick o Made of wood or composite materials. o End of stick should come-up to between your chin and nose when you are standing straight up in your skates.
