THE SECRETARY-GENERAL 7 January 2002 Dear Mr. Sfeir-Younis, I would like to thank you most warmly for your kind words on the award of the 100th Nobel Peace Prize. This is a wonderful moment for the dedicated staff of the Organization, and for me personally. In this time of global uncertainty, the prize has reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation through the United Nations. It is also very humbling because more will also now be expected of us. I am tremendously grateful for your personal commitment and contribution to the work of the United Nations. With my warm regards, Yours sincerely, Kofi A. November 22,2001 H.E. Kofi Annan Secretary-General United Nations United Nations Plaza New York, New York U.S.A. Your Excellency, I have recently noticed here in Geneva a tremendous sense of pride and spirit amongst so many colleagues in the UN community; brought upon, I have been told, by the fact that the work of the UN, and that of yourself as Secretary-General, has finally being given international recognition - indeed the highest accolade. I, myself, felt the same sense of elation at the announcement that an institution for which I have so much respect and admiration has been awarded the NobelPrize. Under your leadership, the U.N. has been relied upon even more as the mechanism to resolve every manner of global emergency; and finally, it has been your personal intervention which has been the critical contribution in crisis. You have become an example for other world leaders, and for all of us from the developing world, you are indeed our model, and our hero. When I heard the news, I said, "...it was time!" I do not need to tell you that you are doing a good job. All the world feels the effects of your contribution. Also, there is no point in my reminding you of the complexities which are confronting you. All I can contribute is that I am thinking about you and I send you the energy for you to handle these challenges; and, on my part, I am working, through my assignment in Geneva, to increase the collaboration between our two institutions.
