Introduction Railfuture is pleased to respond to the London TravelWatch document regarding the Development of Train Services for Chiltern Routes. Our comments will be brief and to the point. Railfuture is the campaigning name of the Railway Development Society Limited, a (not for profit) Limited Company organised in England as twelve regional branches plus two national branches in Scotland and Wales. This coordinated response has been compiled by Railfuture London & South East, and has been agreed with Railfuture Thames Valley for those sections of line in their area (Amersham to Aylesbury and West Ruislip to Bicester North). 2. General Comments Railfuture welcomes the initiative from LTW to suggest ways of raising standards of service on Chiltern Railways services in London and South East. We note the work that has gone into gathering the detail on network capacity and existing services. Chiltern is unique for a number of reasons: its close working relationship and shared infrastructure with London Underground (LU) on the Aylesbury Line; the close proximity of other LU and London Bus services to many Chiltern ‘metro’ stations on the High Wycombe line; the close mix of short and medium distance commuter traffic and the poor interchange facilities at Marylebone. It is equally unique for the impressive increase in patronage generated by reliable modern rolling stock and infrastructure; the benefits of a long-term franchise agreement and an imaginative customer oriented professional management team. It is also inhibited by many of the factors that make it unique! These range from the poor interchange facilities at Marylebone, to a lack of infrastructure between Wembley and West Ruislip. -

The Carrying Trade and the First Railways in England, c1750-c1850 Carolyn Dougherty PhD University of York Railway Studies November 2018 Abstract Transport and economic historians generally consider the change from moving goods principally on roads, inland waterways and coastal ships to moving them principally on railways as inevitable, unproblematic, and the result of technological improvements. While the benefits of rail travel were so clear that most other modes of passenger transport disappeared once rail service was introduced, railway goods transport did not offer as obvious an improvement over the existing goods transport network, known as the carrying trade. Initially most railways were open to the carrying trade, but by the 1840s railway companies began to provide goods carriage and exclude carriers from their lines. The resulting conflict over how, and by whom, goods would be transported on railways, known as the carrying question, lasted more than a decade, and railway companies did not come to dominate domestic goods carriage until the 1850s. In this study I develop a fuller picture of the carrying trade than currently exists, highlighting its multimodal collaborative structure and setting it within the ‘sociable economy’ of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England. I contrast this economy with the business model of joint-stock companies, including railway companies, and investigate responses to the business practices of these companies. I analyse the debate over railway company goods carriage, and identify changes in goods transport resulting from its introduction. Finally, I describe the development and outcome of the carrying question, showing that railway companies faced resistance to their attempts to control goods carriage on rail lines not only from the carrying trade but also from customers of goods transport, the government and the general public. -

A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

One findspot is recorded within the buffer zone, a Bronze Age flint arrowhead. No listed buildings or Scheduled Monuments are recorded within the site or buffer zone. The Magnesian Limestone in South and West Yorkshire Aerial Photographic Mapping Project records levelled ridge and furrow remains within the buffer zone. The Historic Environment Characterisation records the present character of the site as modern commercial core- suburban, probably associated with the construction of Moorends mining village in the first half of the 20th century. There is no legibility of the former parliamentary enclosure in this area. In the western part of the buffer, the landscape character comprises land enclosed from commons and drained in 1825, with changes to the layout between 1851 and 1891 in association with the construction of a new warping system. -

The financial impact of the Great Central Railway’s London extension By Tony Sheward © Tony Sheward 2020 1 THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF THE GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY’S LONDON EXTENSION 1. Introduction The general opinion of authorities, who have written about the Great Central Railway’s (GCR) London Extension, seems to be that the project was not a financial success and acted as a drag on the company’s performance in the years following its opening. This article attempts to examine the financial results of the GCR in the years immediately leading up to the decision to commit to the project, the construction period, and operations from its opening up to 1913. It seeks to discover whether there were other factors, which influenced its financial performance either positively or negatively. For convenience, the title Great Central Railway is used throughout even though this name was not adopted by the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway until 1897. A glossary of the abbreviations for the various lines is included at the end. The detailed financial figures are presented in four time periods as follows: a. The Immediate Years Prior to Work on the London Extension 1887-93 b. Construction of the London Extension Phase I 1894-99 c. Construction of the London Extension Phase II 1900-06 d. The Years after Completion of the London Extension Work 1907-13 The article takes as its main source the annual reports of GCR1 and the Railway Returns2. The historical background for the article is mainly taken from published sources, in particular the three-part history of the GCR by George Dow3 and the short history of the GCR by Robert Hartley.4 Although up to 1912, the annual reports were prepared in two half yearly tranches, the information in this article is presented by calendar year for ease of understanding and comparison. -

The Brixton extension does not appear at all, but details pri nted on the face of the diagr am ? above the box identifyi ng lines etc, intimate that the Highbury to Warren Street secti on will open R December 1968, and warr en Street in Spring 1969. Howe ver, the UndergrounD Guide which came into use f r om 14th October 1968 has yet another new map ; this shows the Vi ctoria Line open as far as Warren o Street , and under construction right down to Brixton but with no station shown on the Brixton extension at Pimlico. -

Time to Change! “Railway Time” With the introduction of the railway, travel became faster. With every station keeping its own local mean time, the need for a synchronized time arose. The first railway company to implement a common time for all stations, appropriately named “Railway Time,” was the Great Western Railway in November 1840. By 1847, most railways were using “London Time,” the time set at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. In 1847, the Railway Clearing House, an industry standards body, recommended that Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) be adopted at all stations as soon as the General Post Office permitted it. On December 1, 1847, the London and North Western Railway, as well as the Caledonian Railway, adopted “London Time,” and by 1848 most railways had followed. Unofficial GMT By 1844, almost all towns and cities in Britain had adopted GMT, though the time standard received some resistance, with railway stations keeping local mean time and showing “London Time” with an additional minute hand on the clock. In 1862, the Great Clock of Westminster, popularly known as Big Ben, was installed. Though not controlled by the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, it received hourly time signals from Greenwich and returned signals twice daily. Standard Time Adopted However, it was not until 1880 that the British legal system caught up with the rest of the country. With the Statutes (Definition of Time) Act (43 & 44 Vict.), Greenwich Mean Time was legally adopted throughout the island of Great Britain on August 2, 1880.
