2 SOCIETY NOTICE BOARD

Editor’s Comments: As I pen this we are still in Europe but who knows where we will be by the next issue !! Whatever your views it would be nice to have a decision made. I suspect a good many politicians will not be re- elected come the next general election be it because of Brexit or de-selection. We keep being told we need to vote again but what if those now dithering then get chucked out themselves. If only parliament was as organised and on top of things like the railways...oh they’re not !! It does however seem that some of the new stock will finally get into service come the May timetable but as for Crossrail, the Cl.345s will all be rusty by the time that opens.

One aspect of the railway scene though does seem to be racing along and that is modernising the signalling systems so much so that a week doesn’t go by without another tranche of semaphores and signal boxes being consigned to history. It is having an effect on what locations get photographed and will reduce the variety and interest...getting very nostalgic. As for traction, some on the GWR routes are already bored with IETS, ECML is next, you have been warned !! Thank goodness for GBRf who alone must have more livery variations on more locos than all other companies put together, more in this issue.

I have tried this month to get a grip on a couple of ongoing series with a list of signal boxes used and pending and the remaining nameplates supplied now illustrated plus an updated list of those still outstanding. Two outstanding RAILWAY GLOBETROTTER articles have finally been penned with a few more to go in the next couple of issues, namely Isle of Man (KGk) Sri Lanka (PS) and Norway (SD). That should get me back on track with those. I have several individual articles now penned to drop in on the following series, SIGNAL BOX SURVEY, RAILWAY VEHICLES, ACCIDENTS and GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. On the later three I always need more photos and how about photos for THEN & NOW as that is like drawing blood. Similarly I have a few more examples ready for WD AUSTRITY 0-6-0ST LOCO SURVEY and OFF THE BEATEN TRACK. Hopefully that will help keep TRACKS on schedule in the very busy next 3 months with various events to attend. However in order to catch up and fit a variety of different articles I have reluctantly cut back on the TRAFFIC & TRACTION NEWS section though a lot of members photos now appear in different sections.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ BELOW

If you haven’t already can you please read my Editorial on spam emails in the March issue. Very apt as several members received spam emails again around the 27th March from a member. I re-iterate you will never get unsolicited emails in my personal name or in the name of ICRS from other members so just ignore and delete and NEVER open a link. I suggest all those with emails ensure you run proper virus checks. I, as do many others, have top line security and update automatically but not all do. One problem may be members running old computers which are not updated and with out of date operating systems. Remember if you use email and are not on Windows 10 and for a short time Windows 7, before that is dumped by Microsoft in January 2020, then you run the serious risk of virus attacks which can grab your email contacts. Can I please ask if you want to query a strange email DO NOT forward / copy the email with the message / link, send a clean separate one. With over a thousand members with emails all who have my email I am at great risk if you do not keep your own house in order. Remember it is like a pyramid with each member also having their own contact list and so on. Sadly the world is getting more technologically entwined with more use of unprotected mobile email and those wishing to conduct mischief on the rise, so having the benefits of technology also means we unfortunately have to be on our guard at all times however b****y annoying that is now becoming. Can I also ask anyone with an email in my own personal name deletes that contact as I will only use the ICRS ones. Just like cold calls which cannot be stopped, life is becoming less carefree when using any technology for communication. I can see how a monks life is appealing with no possessions, especially one with a vow of silence !!!

A few members are forgetting or did not read the previous notification that all Membership cards issued since March 2018 are now for LIFE. It is written on the back of them. You will not get a new card on renewal from now on. The only cards now to be issued to existing members will be for 5 year members on renewal / switch to annual membership as they come up in the next couple of years. 3 Errata: March 2019 – P26 57309 passed at 14.45 heading for Toton, p40 end of caption for top photo should read 29th January 2019 (Mike Brook)

EVENTS

All 2019 events organised, either confirmed or with provisional dates are shown below. Further events may be added in due course between issues of TRACKS so keep an eye on our website. PLEASE DO NOT try to book places for Members Only Visits with provisional dates shown by TBC until they are formalised or where the event though confirmed is many months in advance with details yet to be provided. Once they have, BOOKING OPEN will be shown alongside and a request will be made for you to book your place. Most visits do not have limits so no need to panic by booking too early.

Please note that there is no excuse for booking then not notifying us you cannot then attend or have been delayed travelling on the day, genuine reasons apart. As with events where numbers need to be accurately known by the hosts for a tour, food or room capacity this is not acceptable. We have tried to ease the official’s organising burden and saving you money in postage by allowing members to pay on the day, but this can be abused as it can be then seen as nothing to lose if you can’t be bothered to turn up. We still wish to save time and your money, so we will still try to allow payment on the day but for those who do not turn up and do not have the courtesy to contact us at the time or afterwards will not be welcome to book future tours without a non-returnable payment up front.

We dropped the idea of providing our bank details in TRACKS again as it seems no sooner than we publish these that we get spurious direct debits appear on the Society bank account. It happened before so if it is a member then that is extremely disappointing. If anyone wants to pay for anything up front then we can provide the bank details on request.

4 We cannot accept bookings by letter only, as there is no way to quickly contact you if plans have to be amended at short notice.

MEMBERS ONLY VISITS West Coast Railways, Carnforth, 2019: BOOKING OPEN (spaces left) Sat 11th May (FULL), Sat 22nd Jun (FULL), Sat 10th Aug (FULL) & Sat 12th Oct (1) Though the 2019 visits are now almost fully booked we do have cancellations so there are reserve lists in operation.

Following our successful first visit in August 2018 we have organised 5 more for 2019, the first having already taken place. Again the places are limited to 30 but this is the right number having experienced it firsthand as it allowed questions to be asked of our guide and prevents getting in each other’s way...well not too much !! The cost is £20 payable on the day. For the May, Jun, Aug & Oct visits meet at Carnforth Station at 11.25 for an 11.45 start. The tour will take approx. 3 to 3½ hours so if you are travelling by train please arrange your return accordingly. Needing to leave early caused problems but we got away with it once and we don’t want to risk future visits. There is paid parking at the station or free spaces can be found nearby.

Hi-viz, sturdy footwear and hard hat / bump cap must be worn. We have stocks of hi-viz vests and bump caps to purchase, so contact Trevor for more details. All photos taken are for private use ONLY, no public display either online, in magazines or via social media.

Please apply to Tony Whitehead clearly stating your name, membership number, and importantly a contact telephone number and indicate your preference / availability for the dates shown. Email is best and he will respond asap. Email: [email protected] or by Tel: 07895 386777 but no calls after 20.45 in the evening please as he will be in bed early as he has to be up for work at 04.30 each morning. Best time to ring is after 18.30 weekdays and weekends. Though Tony does not have an answerphone he will return your tel. call promptly if your number is recorded as a missed call, so don’t panic. Only if you consistently have any trouble contacting Tony or he hasn’t responded after several days then in the last resort contact Trevor or Christine (details on page 2).

th Long Marston: Sat 15 Jun 2019: BOOKING OPEN – No limit on spaces The charge is £15 payable on the day but you MUST inform us in advance that you are attending and ONLY if you are 100% certain. If that is so, please contact our President, Simon Mutten (details on page 2) by the cut-off point of the 25th May 2019 so we can provide the organisers with a list of attendees.

Please arrive no later than 10.00 with the aim to start at 10.30. We will be there from 09.30 so if you arrive earlier you will then have time to pay and buy books / sundries which we will have available. Yard lists will be available for sale on the day from the organisers for you to check off stock, though we will as in previous years provide a detailed list in TRACKS from members own sightings. Coffee and cake will be available from around midday but feel free to bring refreshments. The site must be clear by 16.00, so that is a decent amount of time to wander freely around the site, however you must adhere to the rules below and respect this opportunity. • No public display of your photographs either online, in magazines or via social media. It is the adherence to this rule that allows visits to continue every year. Any breach will result in membership being withdrawn. • No climbing onto, between or underneath stock. • No entry into any building or enclosed area unless invited. • Wear good walking shoes, bring waterproof clothing. Hi-viz jackets are preferred but not essential (no rail movements on the day). • You are entirely responsible for your own safety

There is parking on site with access off Station Road. Programme your Sat Nav with either CV37 8PL or CV37 8RP or if like me you prefer maps, Station Road runs just south of Long Marston village between the minor road to Mickleton and the B4632 Mickleton to Stratford-upon-Avon. The entrance is on the south side of Station Road at the Long Marston end near the ‘The Greenway’ cycle path.

5 For those who went in previous years you will know it is a big site (130 acres) and with more stock than ever it is a lot of walking, several miles up and down sidings. Also for those that missed out last year, remember to visit the secure Compound as that is where most of the stored locos are. We will no doubt be restricted to an hour inside as previously and you will need it all. In 2018 this was visited straight away so don’t be late arriving or you will miss this.

th Eastleigh Works: Sat 14 Sep 2019: Date confirmed but booking not yet open until details confirmed. No need to panic as no limit on spaces.

PRESERVATION GALAS to be attended with our sales stand SVR Spring Diesel Gala: 18th May 2019 We will be inside the Kidderminster Town Diesel Shed on the Sat only.

Tickets are primarily available online at www.classicmagazines.co.uk/allchange but phone and postal applications are possible. Ticket Prices: Adult £12.50, accompanied child £7.50, under 5s Free Online sales will be limited to a maximum combination of four adult or child tickets. No child ticket can be bought without an accompanying adult ticket. Phone: 01507 529529, Post: Crewe Open Day Tickets, Customer Services, Mortons Media Group, Morton Way, Horncastle, Lincs, LN9 6JR, enclosing a cheque payable to Mortons Media Group. Tickets will be posted out in early May.

PRESERVATION NEWS

Misc News: The exact failure of D9009 whilst hauling the southbound return leg of the ‘Auld Reekie’, see p16 in the March issue, has been established and it is bad news. All six recently refurbished traction motors and one main generator suffered an arcing event the equivalent of being hit by lightning which also damaged refurbished bogies, which were being run in prior to fitting to 55015 ‘TULYAR’. The cost of repairs will be expensive and prevent both locos from fulfilling booked duties.

STOCK MOVES

With so many new stock moves occurring, particularly with various barrier wagons and transfers of stock between operators or into store, I thought it best to start showing these all together as this will become a regular sight over the next few years.

It hasn't moved much but was noted on Track, station and signalling work at Brundall Crown Point on 28th where it was used to move station continued between the 23rd-31st March. 17 During this time the turn back points in the station either diesel or electric mode between Norwich have been removed, track on the level crossing and Diss. replaced, platforms resurfaced and further work on the signalling. The signal box at Cantley has become solely a crossing box. The new signalling system has been delayed which has resulted in the Berney Arms line remaining closed for longer than initially planned or advertised. The track replacement work involved several GBRF including 66713, 66751, 66765, 66774 and 66780. The other big event of the month was the arrival of 88003 and 88007 for route filming. They arrived on Monday 25th and on the 26th filmed routes through Ely and Cambridge and up to Kings Lynn before returning to Norwich. On the 27th they travelled the eastern routes including

19 WD AUSTERITY 0-6-0ST LOCO SURVEY

Though some have already been covered in TRACKS under various headings this series will endeavour to fully record the surviving Austerity 0-6-0STs (75) that survive from the 485 built. A versatile loco, they can be found on many preserved railways either working or in a dismantled state. The background to the class was covered in the October issue of TRACKS on p56.

66 [3890]: This was the last standard steam loco built for the UK market until new builds of recent times and was one of the least travelled Austerities. [3890] was built directly for the NCB in March 1964 by Hunslet, numbered 66 it went to Cadeby Main Colliery, Conisborough. Originally fitted with a mechanical stoker and a gas producer, both were replaced as they fell into disuse. When the Conisborough area was declared a smokeless zone in 1970 steam was replaced by diesel locos. Out of use for 5 years, 66 was sold into preservation having been bought by a member of the Railway Society. It was delivered to the Railway Centre (BRC) at Quainton Road, to whom it eventually passed, in November 1975 and where it has remained ever since, only its second home. Complete with many spares the loco was in good order apart from very worn tyres which prevented its early use. Eventually an overhaul began in March 2007 with the frame and wheels going to South Coast Steam, Portland which returned in August 2009 and the boiler going to the GCR at Loughborough (see photo below) returning in 2014 followed by a return to service in May 2015.

20 PRESERVATION GALAS

Bluebell Railway (BBR) Branch Line Weekend by Colin James: The BBR held its Branch Line Weekend over the three days of Friday 15th to Sunday 17th of March. I made my visit on the Sunday, which weather wise was the best of the three days, with plenty of sunshine and only the odd rain / hail shower.

For the event the railway hired in two visiting locomotives, Adams 02 0-4-4T W24 ‘CALBOURNE’ (courtesy of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway) & Beattie 0298 2-4-0WT 30587 (courtesy of the National Railway Museum). From the home fleet, the following locos were in action, O1 class 0-6-0 65, Q 0-6-0 30541, H 0-4-4T 263 & P 0-6-0T 178. All the locomotives faced boiler first to East Grinstead. Also originally scheduled to work on the event was P class 0-6-0T 323 ‘BLUEBELL’, but its annual boiler examination revealed the need for major boiler work, ahead of its 8th year in service, so it was withdrawn from service and is now on display in the ‘Steam Works’ attraction at Sheffield Park.

As the visiting locomotives were ex-LSWR engines in BR Black, the railway’s own stored LSWR engines were moved to Horsted Keynes for display. Adams B4 0-4-0T Dock tank 96 ‘NORMANDY’ was temporarily re-numbered into its BR identity of 30096 & Adams 415 4-4-2T Radial tank 488 has been fully repainted into its BR identity of 30583 (sponsored by Steam Railway Magazine, with the view to generating interest and funding for a full overhaul). These joined other visible locomotives currently in store at Horsted Keynes, these being, Bulleid WC 4-6-2 21C123 ‘BLACKMORE VALE’, U 2-6-0 1638, C 0-6-0 592 & NLR 0-6-0T 58850. At Sheffield Park, the locomotive shed now incorporates the ‘Steam Works’ interactive attraction, with S15 class 4-6-0 847, BR 4MT 4-6-0 75027, Bulleid BoB 4-6-2 No.34059 ‘SIR ARCHIBALD SINCLAIR’ (minus its boiler), E4 0-6-2T 473, 0-6-0T 3 ‘CAPTAIN BAXTER’, A1 Terrier 0-6-0T 672 ‘FENCHURCH’, A1X Terrier 0-6-0T 55 ‘STEPNEY’ all on display. In the locomotive works were BR 4MT 2-6-4T 80151 under restoration & BR 5MT 2-6-0 73082 ‘CAMELOT’ under winter maintenance. The chassis of Schools class 4-4-0 928 ‘STOWE’ continues to be overhauled in the yard. Also on display were the boiler and frames of new build Brighton Atlantic 4-4-2 32424 ‘BEACHY HEAD’ and the frames of BR 2MT 2-6-2T 84030. A new 2 road maintenance shed is being built in the southern part of the yard.

Sunday’s timetable for the event started and ended with the normal Sheffield Park – East Grinstead trains with three rakes of coaching stock, but in the middle had services from either end terminating at Horsted Keynes, with a change of trains required for onward travel. There was also a Horsted Keynes – Kingscote shuttle running, which needed four rakes of stock. The day started with a four coach Metropolitan Railways set, a four coach 4w Victorian set (plus the LNWR Observation saloon on occasions) and a seven coach Maunsell / Bulleid set.

During the middle of the day the seven coach set was split into a three coach Maunsell set & a four coach Bullied set. Included in the Bullied set was CK 5768 on its first runs since a comprehensive restoration. The day did not go totally to plan. A derailment in the carriage sidings at Horsted Keynes 23 meant the Victorian set only running as a two car set until a quick shunt took place to strengthen the set with an additional Maunsell carriage. Then after just one return trip 30587 was failed, resulting in some late running, with 178 taking up the slack replacing 30587.

4-6-0 6989 Launch Day, Buckinghamshire Rly Centre (BRC) by Colin James: The BRC, at Quainton Rd held a launch day for its GWR modified Hall 4-6-0 No.6989 ‘WIGHTWICK HALL’ on Sunday 3rd March 2019. This loco was its making official bow in preservation after a 40 year restoration having first turned its wheels in late 2018. Unfortunately for the day the weather did not co-operate with blustery winds and near continuous rainfall for the occasion, but this did not deter the enthusiasts and families who came out for the event.

right 9466 (11.45) 3rd March 2019 (Colin James)

It was a surprise and something of a shock to realise it was somewhere over 30 years since I last visited Quainton Road. Always on the list of places to visit, just somehow I never got round to going back. I’m not a devotee of the GWR, but the chance to see the first runs of a loco in preservation, combined with a gap in my work shift pattern, made it a day too good to miss at this quiet time of the year. 6989 is currently using the tender from 6984 ‘OWSDEN HALL’ (at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway) whilst its own is completed. I was told that 6989 would be staying at Quainton Road this year, especially as the BRC is itself 50 years old this year and will be holding special events in the summer to celebrate its birthday.

24 6989 (12.02) 3rd March 2019 (Colin James)

The BRC at Quainton Rd is somewhat unusual as it has the ex GCR / Metropolitan joint line running through the centre of it, as a single line on the old up formation through platform 1. This line still sees traffic, mainly to the waste handling site at Calvert. The BRC museum occupies about 25 acres of land on the Up & Down side of the main line. The relocated ex-LNWR Rewley Road station is in the up side yard alongside platform 1 and is the entrance and visitor centre. The old passenger entrance faces south into the yard, with the 2 platforms to the north, closer to the road over bridge. There is a traverser to allow stock movements into the ‘station’. Presently LNWR 2-2-2 3020 ‘CORNWALL’ (on loan from the NRM) sits in the station with GWR, LSWR & LNWR stock, including a cinema coach.

left D2298 under repair stabled in the down yard at 13.11 3rd March 2019 (Colin James)

The BRC holds stock from BR, LT (and their constituents), industrial and foreign railways. Quainton Road was also the junction for the , making an island platform on the down line (with an original Aveling & Porter engine and a replica tramway carriage on display in the down yard museum) and platform 3 is still in use for train rides in the down yard. Also in the down yard, the former Ministry of Food Buffer Depot warehouse buildings are in use as restoration, storage and museum buildings. With no train access to platform 1, a new platform, numbered 4, has been built in the up yard for train rides on that side of the site. The original station buildings survived, the main building on platform 1 is restored to 1900 conditions and the building on platforms 2-3 holds a Brill Tramway exhibition. The signal box in the down yard was originally located 25 at Harlington on the Midland Main line and replaced the original Metropolitan signal box which was burnt down before the society took over the site.

Guest locos for the event were: USA 0-6-0T 30070, masquerading as scrapped classmate 300 ‘Frank S Ross’ in Longmoor Military Railway blue (courtesy of the Kent & East Sussex Railway) and GWR 0-6-0PT 5786, running as London Transport liveried L.92 (courtesy of the South Devon Railway). Home fleet locos in operation were: SR Schools 4-4-0 925 ‘CHELTENHAM’, LMS 2MT 2-6-2T 41312, BR Std 4MT 2-6-0 76017 and BR Std 9F 2-10-0 92212. 26 Three passenger trains made up of BR Mk1s and a Bulleid Brake plus a L92 departing Ropley platform 1 at 12.30 on 12.00 demonstration freight train were in Alresford – Medstead & Fourmarks service use. Rides could be taken on the 9th March 2019 (Colin James) Queen Mary Brake van, for a supplementary payment. All locos swapped between passenger and freight trains, except for 925 and 92212, which worked the same passenger trains in the timetable, 925 only on the Saturday, 92212 on the Friday & Sunday.

Steam locos seen at Ropley that are undergoing overhaul or restoration were: S15 4-6-0 499, S15 4-6-0 828, Bulleid WC 4-6-2 34105 ‘SWANAGE’, Bulleid MN 4-6-2 35005 ‘CANADIAN PACIFIC’ (boiler only) & BR Std 4MT 4-6-0 75079. Also at Ropley was 4-6-0 850 ‘LORD NELSON’, currently stored in the Carriage Works pending the start of its overhaul. At Alresford BR Std 4MT 2-6-4T 80150 is stored in the sidings. Diesel locos seen were: 08377 at Alresford with D3358, 12049, 47579 & 50027 ‘Lion’ at Ropley.

The railway has in some respects gone back to the past, as it currently only operates between Alresford and Medstead & Fourmarks. The line to Alton is severed in the old Butts Jnct area, where a new road bridge is being built for a housing development on the edge of Alton. The bridge works is scheduled to be finished by July. This meant a slightly less intensive timetable without the Ropley – Alresford shuttles. Trains were busy without being packed, but the event was on the same weekend as steam events at the Nene Valley, Keighley & Worth Valley and East Lancs Railways, combined with some uncertain weather conditions.

28 Nene Valley Railway (NVR) Southern Steam Gala by Colin James: The NVR held a Southern Steam Weekend over Saturday & Sunday the 9 - 10th of March. I visited on the Sunday and it was a quieter event than the full galas of other railways on the same weekend with just the 3 locos in steam. The Sunday starting with a wintery blast of wind and rain before the sun broke through later.

Two trains were in use on the main line on a relaxed timetable, a BR Mk1 (4) carriage set for the Wansford – Peterborough services plus a BR Mk1 (2) + wagon and brake van set for the Wansford – Yarwell Jnct services. These services were worked in turn by 34081 or 30926. Originally timetabled to work the Yarwell Jnct services, 662 instead was limited to working brake van rides within the confines of Wansford Yard.

Avon Valley Railway (AVR Mixed Traffic Gala by Paul Normanton: Sat 16th March 2019 saw the culmination of many hours of hard labour getting 08202 presentable to meet the public at the Mixed Traffic Gala. The weather stayed dry for us, despite a terrible forecast, and the numbers attending were very good, higher than were expected by many of us. A total of 6 locos took part during this one day event, Hudswell Clarke 1742 'Millom' visiting from the Buckinghamshire Rly Centre, and 5 locos from the home fleet, Hunslet WD132 'SAPPER', Ruston Hornsby 429 'River Annan', Andrew Barclay WD 70043 'Grumpy', Andrew Barclay 446 'Kingswood' and 08202.

We 'borrowed' the cooker from 31130 and installed it in the cab of the 08, meaning lots of tea, bacon and sausage rolls were consumed by

30 the crew throughout a very enjoyable day. Fortunately all the locomotives performed well with no failures or problems, and the timetable was adhered to all day. The exhaust silencer sadly developed ' a problem' on the 08 the evening before the gala, and had to be removed for the duration of the event, only being replaced on the Saturday evening. This resulted in a good old fashioned bit of 08 thrash, as the gronk worked both freight and passenger services, and led to many favourable comments. Oh well, these things happen!!

Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWV) Spring Gala by Andy Woodcock: The KWV held its Spring Gala over the weekend 8-10th March 2019 and I attended on the Saturday when the weather was bad with heavy showers, wind and cold. This did not the diehards and as the day progressed the weather improved. In fact one of the first trains, 1054 plus the vintage carriages on a full line journey was packed. Home fleet locos in use were Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 2-10-0 5820, 0-6-2T 1054, 4F 0-6-0 43924, BR Std 2-6-0 78022. Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45212 and Jubilee 4-6-0 45596 ‘BAHAMAS’. Visiting was Ivatt 2-6-0 46521 (from GCR). Both 78022 and 46521 were in green livery. Overall attendances were good. Following the success of the 50th Anniversary in 2018 the railway has got a new spirit with its organisation. Attractions included locos on display at Keighley for most of day- on my visit with 78022 turned on the turntable. At Ingrow 45596 was in steam for footplate visits most of the day. At Oakworth there were steam crane demonstrations, whilst at Haworth there were frequent visits to the Loco Sheds, Also the Ingrow Keighley shuttles were top and tail operated. A well organised and interesting gala so well done KWV.

31 SIGNAL BOX SURVEY

As reported in the Jan / Feb 2019 issue we recently lost Les Steenton so sadly I was unable to feature the following boxes in time, but here they are now in his memory. The three boxes are all on the Hereford to Shrewsbury line and shown from south to north.

Bromfield: SO 486 775 Opened in 1873 it is a type 1 LNWR / GWR design with a 29 lever frame. The box on the north side of the line was adjacent the long demolished station, closed in 1958, 1½ miles northwest of Ludlow station. It is located northwest of the minor road, on which it controls a level crossing that connects Bromfield to Ludlow Racecourse and Golf Club.

looking northwards, 25th April 2017 (Leslie Steenton). I have been unable to find information on the strange looking building to the left of the box which is possibly connected with the racecourse, the stables for which are behind...anyone have any information ?

Craven Arms: SO 430 835 The only remaining one of three boxes in the area, this utilitarian looking box was built in 2000 around the crumbling frame of the original box which was then removed from within. It was fitted with a 30 lever frame. Five miles north of Bromfield it is located 1/3 mile north of Craven Arms station to the east of the line on the south side of Long Lane controlling the level crossing.

left looking southeast, 5th May 2017 (Leslie Steenton), the A49 is just a short distance to the left

32 Marsh Brook: SO 441 898 Built in 1872 to a joint LNWR / GWR type 1 design with an 18 lever frame. It was given Grade II listing in April 2013 as the best one of only 5 left to this design. It is located 4 miles north of the Craven Arms box and 2 ½ miles south of Church Stretton, to the east of the line and north of a level crossing on the B4370

looking northwards from Long Lane, 6th July 2017 (Leslie Steenton), the A49 is just a short distance to the right

Misc News: It is now getting hard to keep up with the increasing signalling modernisation taking place around the UK and would need a few issues solely dedicated to signalling to record boxes affected. However I have endeavoured to provide a list of boxes covered in previous TRACKS, be it in full or as prominent backdrop to a traction photo, though I may not have got all of these yet. Therefore some in the ‘yet to be featured’ list might switch to the ‘featured’ list. I have also included boxes that I have photos of, as kindly supplied by some of you. Any not listed are always welcome and it maybe that photos will be put on the website in due course. In addition to those boxes on the network I personally have the majority of those on preserved lines but have not listed them...yet !! Letters in brackets for NR boxes are my code for contributors ie initials. Those without codes are my photos. [C] – signal cabin

Begun in 2000 the Weaver – Wavertree re-signalling scheme has been completed resulting in the closure of 5 signal boxes, Ditton, Halton Jnct, Runcorn, Speke Jnct and Allerton Jnct. and control passing to the Manchester ROC. Runcorn is listed so will remain awaiting an alternative use but Speke Jnct signal box was demolished 23rd-24th March 2019. Ditton will also remain being built in 2000 but Allerton is to be demolished but no info on whether Halton Jnct is to go. Anyone got more info or photos of the affected boxes ?

The Newhaven and Seaford branch will see semaphore signalling ending by the summer with the closure of Lewes B, Newhaven Town and Newhaven Harbour signal boxes with control passing to the Three Bridges ROC. Lewes B is grade II listed so will remain, Newhaven Town will be demolished and Newhaven Harbour will transfer to the Port Authority. Article on these boxes to follow.

track alterations and platform extension with 66751 t&t 66xxx plus Kirow crane, Brundall 24th February 2019 (Stuart Moore) note the new signals in place

35 Signalling is also being modernised in East Anglia on the Wherry Line between Norwich, Lowestoft and Yarmouth along with some track alterations, which will see a haven of semaphore signalling lost with control transferring to Colchester Area Signalling Centre. The upgrade affects 12 signal boxes with at Brundall, Cantley, Reedham Junction, Oulton Broad North, Lowestoft, Acle and Yarmouth and the gate boxes at Chapel Road, Lingwood and Strumpshaw level crossings all closing. Brundall is grade II listed so will remain but the future of the other boxes is in doubt. Only the swing bridge signal boxes at Reedham, Somerleyton and Oulton Broad will remain operational. (See also News from Norfolk in TRAFFIC & TRACTION NEWS). Any photos on the boxes not already received (see list above) will be gratefully received.

On the Highland main line an upgrade has been completed with work concentrated around Pitlochry and Aviemore with semaphores all removed by the end of March 2019. This upgrade to the signalling and track will allow an hourly service to eventually be implemented.

Misc News: All the former Eurostar platforms 20-24 at Waterloo are now back in use.

Engineering work on the Cambrian lines over the weekends of the 2nd-3rd March and 9-10th March 2019 has seen 37418 in action for the first time since being taken over by Colas Rail. ERTMS fitted 97304 was used to haul 37418 t&t 37099 from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth where the latter pair could then work within the possession

The renovated 70’ Ransomes & Rapier turntable at the former Ferryhill Depot just south of Aberdeen station was used to turn 4-6-2 A1 60163 ‘TORNADO’ on the 14th March 2019, the first time it has been operated in 19 years. The facility to turn locos will allow more steam tours to visit Aberdeen and further ‘Aberdonian’ tours with 60163 are planned for August 2019....hopefully I won’t miss these, ed !! On the 24th February 2019, 86638 + 86627 conducting a test run became the first electric traction to use the newly electrified line via Shotts between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

36 On the 4th March 2019 the Forth Rail Bridge marked its 130th anniversary.

The extended platforms 5 & 6 at Edinburgh Waverley opened for use from the 28th February 2019. Storm Gareth wreaked havoc with severe damage to the Conwy Valley Line between Llandudno Jnct and Blaenau Ffestiniog resulting in closure for several months whilst the effects of the flooding are repaired.

Rose Street carriage sidings have been re-laid with new bufferstops alongside Inverness Depot to stable HSTs as seen below on the 26th March 2019 by Alan Jones with 43183 t&t 43xxx and a complete refurbished set of 43152 t&t 43xxx with 43243 next to 43152.

Focus on the 59’s: A day out on the Berks and Hants by Colin Pottle: Unbelievably, the Cl.59 has been plodding its way up and down the Berks and Hants on the GWR for well over 30 years now. Built between 1985 and 1995 the class only amounts to 15 examples, 59001- 05/101-04/201-06, but was the precursor to the much more numerous similarly looking Cl. 66. 59003 was exported in 1997 to Germany but was repatriated in August 2014 by GBRF and can therefore turn up on almost any working around the country.

59004 on 6V18 Allington ARC - Whatley Quarry, Great Bedwyn (15.15) 15th March 2019 (Colin Pottle)

Designed originally to haul the 4800 tonne jumbo stone trains from Merehead and Whatley Quarries to Acton Yard and beyond, unless you are local to this route the chances of seeing a 59/0 or 59/1 are slim to non-existent. With this is mind, I decided to journey to the Bedwyn area of the Berks and Hants on Friday 15th March as it is fairly local, within a 2 hours drive!...that is a pop down the shops up here, ed. The last time I tried this was a few years ago and the only example I saw all day was 59202 on a jumbo train, all the others being cancelled. You have been warned, it can be very hit and miss!

left 59202 on 6L21 Whatley Quarry - Dagenham Dock ARC, Great Bedwyn (14.56) 15th March 2019 (Colin Pottle)

Not so on this occasion. Arriving at around 09.15 at Midgham station I had a good hours’ wait before the first ‘jumbo’ was due. The first train to pass was HST 43185 in IC livery, a good omen? I walked westbound along the canal next to the station, eventually coming to a pedestrian crossing (one of the few still open) with good views in either direction, albeit on quite a curve so not great for early warning of approaching trains. Right on time, 59002 appeared with a jumbo train from Merehead Quarry to Acton. 38 59104 on 7C77 Acton Yard - Merehead Quarry, Great Bedwyn (14.18) 15th March 2019 (Colin Pottle)

I stuck around there for another hour or so, but with Real Time Trains reporting no freights due until gone 12 I thought I’d look for a straighter bit of track, not an easy thing along this stretch as there seem to be housing estates springing up at a rate of knots in this area. Big mistake, as 59205 came flying around the curve, westbound, I didn’t have time to get the lens cap off!

I travelled a few miles westwards and came to Bedwyn, found a nice open place to park up right next to the track, just as well as a fine rain was falling and the wind was horrendous, so I was able to sit in the car and dash out when something was coming!

above 66188 + 59204 on 6C76 Acton Yard - Whatley Quarry, Great Bedwyn (16.21) 15th March 2019 (Colin Pottle)

A big surprise was 59003 passing on a Network Rail engineers train, diverted from its normal route. So I saw all variants of the Cl.59s, seven in total on various trains, 59002- 04/104/202/204/205 covering all 4 liveries, Aggregates Industries, Hanson, DBC and GBRf. With a few Cl.66s, 800s & 802s also seen, all in all a very good day out.

45 RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS: 1

St Kitts Scenic Railway by Keith Blackman: On a recent holiday to the Caribbean island of St Kitts I was able to take a ride on their Scenic Railway. It is a 2’-6” (762mm) narrow gauge line around 18 miles long and the ride took over 2 hours at a very sedate 10mph. The line was built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar cane to the capital Bassterre.

The final sugar cane train ran on the 31st July 2005 but the Scenic Railway had already begun operating from the 28th January 2003, so keeping open the last remaining railway in the West Indies.

There are three PKP class Lyd2 0- 6-0DH locos built by Faur in Romania as seen right.

The five double deck carriages each have an open air upper deck / observation platform with canvas roof and an air conditioned lower parlour furnished with rattan chairs and bar. They were designed by Colorado Railcar and built by Hamilton Manf Co, Washington State in the USA. A power car is included in the rake between the loco and coaches.

Branch Line Society (BLS) Tour, by Harold Hull: The 26th-27th January 2019 saw the first Winter Gold weekend of the year in Blackpool. In addition to the 6 scheduled Blackpool & tram cars on the Saturday, a private charter by the BLS used modified balloon 713. This visited most crossovers on the system including accessing Bispham loop from the south (Fleetwood) end. The car also traversed 2 stabling roads in Starr Gate Depot plus one in the engineers side. The unwired crossover at the south end of Foxall was also traversed using engineering car 754. This yellow machine then towed 713 along the Wallside line in Blundell St before reversing round the triangle to the front of Rigby Road Depot. Here 754 was replaced by the former Blackpool Transport ERF heavy lift vehicle to propel and then return 713 to the paint shop doors.

Out on the mainline 711 stood at North Pier on both days complete with snowplough attached (see opposite). The heritage service performed well until around 16.00 when 642 refused to move just south of Foxall. Fortunately 713 was behind and pushed it clear of the points for 711 to propel 642 to depot.

147 Rigby Road Depot (09.42) 26th January 2019 (Harold Hull)

Sunday saw 70 mph gusts on the prom which immediately confined trolley fitted box 40 to depot with 713 being used instead. Balloon 715 succumbed near Cabin with damage to a cab door which also resulted in a broken window and was replaced by 680. 700 was the third casualty and feature car 736 ‘HMS BLACKPOOL’ sailed to the rescue. This arrived at Starr Gate bow first and went to Little Bispham stern first. Southbound 47 at Cabin it was intercepted by the duty inspector and reversed from south to north lines at Cabin, very rare!! Back to Little Bispham then to Pleasure Beach was followed by a speedy run to Fleetwood, before another run from Pleasure Beach to Little Bispham and back to Depot.

48 Manchester Metrolink by Geoff Hope: March 2019: Since June 2018 a total of 63 incidents have been recorded involving youngsters as young as 11 years old tram surfing either clinging on the back of the tram by the windscreen wiper or sitting between double trams using the couplers as foot rests. On the 10th March, due to high winds, a tree was blown onto the tracks on the Bury line, the service being worked between Bury - Whitefield and Queens Road - Piccadilly.

Friday 15th March St.Peter’s Square was blocked by young climate change protesters taking part in a ‘school strike’. Head of TGMs Metrolink was disappointed they chose Metrolink considering it is one of the greenest and most sustainable ways to travel across Greater Manchester. During the week commencing 18th March tram 3006 was the first M5000 tram to pass the 1 million km milestone. A visit to Trafford Park on the 26th March revealed all platforms were nearly built on 4 of the 6 stops with both Parkway and Village at an advanced stage with canopies in place.

Tram 3075 is now advertising ‘The Body Shop’ with the number of products it sells.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

This is an occasional series devoted to showing withdrawn and ultimately scrapped rolling stock around the UK. If you have photos and any accompanying info, then please forward to the Editor.

08246 (13316/D3316) + 08563 (D3730): Both shunters are seen below at Grangemouth Depot prior to October 1982 by Malcolm Wallace. 08246 built September 1956 was withdrawn in August 1982, 08563 built January 1959 was withdrawn in April 1982 and both were cut up by D. Christie at Camlachie in April 1987 having moved there from Glasgow St Rollox Works.

49 RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS - 2

It took a year but I finally got round to including the follow up Polish tour promised for early 2018 !!

Return to Poland, 27th July – 2nd Aug 2016 by John Teasdale: My first visit to Poland in 2015 (see Dec 2016 & Jan / Feb 2017 issues) had generated an interest for a return and as Gatwick is far more accessible to me, my plan was to fly to Berlin then train to Poznan to meet my fellow travellers. Although it is possible to get around by train, a hire car is the best option considering the distance some depots and stabling points are from stations.

above left EP07 1062 above right EP09 046 Poznan Glowny, 28th July 2016

Thursday 28th July: After a brief look in at the main station in Poznan, the freight depot of Poznan Franawo was the only call on the first evening with 100+ on shed. This included all four members of Cl.EM10, an unsuccessful centre cab design intended for shunting and short passenger workings, and three examples of newly delivered Vectrons.

Friday 29th July: First call in the morning was the Glowny depot then it was off to Szczecin via Krzyz where the last 10 members of class SP32 were stored and Stargard Szczecinski which is semi derelict. Unlike finding our hotel later, locating Port Centralny depot was easy and permission for an unaccompanied visit readily given. Many of the locos stored

here looked unlikely to be returned to traffic but some of the Cl.ET 42 double locos present were clearly working (see photo overleaf middle). All that then remained was a short (distance wise anyway) journey to our hotel via a convoluted one way system and roadworks. Fortunately, it was a short walk to an excellent restaurant and a welcome beer!

Saturday 30th July: We headed south with successful calls made at firstly at Kostrzyn then Rzepin. Rzepin is on a major freight route from Germany and had a wide variety of locos from several private owners present. It was then on to Czerwiensk and Wegliniec before the last call of the day at Legnica.

Sunday 30th July: Being a Sunday our intent was to visit the large and interesting museum in the former PKP roundhouse at Jaworzyna Slaska (see above) but our first call was at the station and nearby yard. A surprise sight was 2-8-2T TKt48 18 at the head of a short special train (see overleaf). It looked immaculate and sounded it as well when the driver made a show start with the clouds of smoke hanging around for some time afterwards! Despite being a weekend, several locos from private companies Pol Miedz Transport and CTL were heading trains through the yard.

In 2015, many locos were stored at Jelenia Gora but, on this visit, the former depot was firmly closed and clearly empty. After Kamieniec Zabkowicki, our last calls were at the two large Wroclaw depots, Brochow and Centralny. Permission to go around on our own was readily given at both with staff at Centralny also allowing access to the significant number of preserved items in part of the depot. Also inside were several locos belonging to MajkolTrans as with SM31 016 left, evidence of the outside contract work now being undertaken. 54 Monday 1st August: Two nights in Wroclaw were planned, allowing a loop southwards to be made, taking in Opole, Kedzierzyn Kozle, the sand railway at Kotlarnia and Rybnik (a most complicated one way system including roadworks) before returning.

Tuesday 2nd August: The only call on our last day was Leszno where several rusting Cl.Ol49 2-6-2s were present, many with missing parts, seemingly removed to aid the work being done on Ol49 69.

right SM04 742, Leszno, 2nd August 2016

All in all a very successful tour in an interesting country with permission given to walk around all 18 depots visited....not bad.

NEW STOCK

Though in the past I have attempted to individually show all new stock, with the flood of new stock recently delivered and proposed over the next few years and less pages to work with, it is now impractical to do so. I will continue however to show all new locos and smaller classes of units and coaches but I will only show a representative selection of the latter types, particularly from as many different members / different locations as possible or to illustrate a comparison. So if a particularly unit has not been shown but you photograph it in a more ‘unusual’ location within a reasonable time of it entering service then I will try to include it.
