Grey Morality of the Colonized Subject in Postwar Japanese Cinema and Contemporary Manga
EITHER 'SHINING WHITE OR BLACKEST BLACK': GREY MORALITY OF THE COLONIZED SUBJECT IN POSTWAR JAPANESE CINEMA AND CONTEMPORARY MANGA Elena M. Aponte A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2017 Committee: Khani Begum, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2017 Elena M. Aponte All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Khani Begum, Advisor The cultural and political relationship between Japan and the United States is often praised for its equity, collaboration, and mutual respect. To many, the alliance between Japan and the United States serves as a testament for overcoming a violent and antagonistic past. However, the impact of the United States occupation and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is rarely discussed in light of this alliance. The economic revival, while important to Japan’s reentry into the global market, inevitably obscured continuing paternalistic interactions between Japan and the United States. Using postcolonial theory from Homi K. Bhahba, Frantz Fanon, and Hiroshi Yoshioka as a foundation, this study examines the ways Japan was colonized during and after the seven-year occupation by the United States. The following is a close assessment of two texts and their political significance at two specific points in history. Akira Kurosawa's1948 noir film Drunken Angel (Yoidore Tenshi) shaped the identity of postwar Japan; Yasuhiro Nightow’s Trigun manga series navigates cultural amnesia and American exceptionalism during the 1990s after the Bubble Economy fell into recession in 1995. These texts are worthy of simultaneous assessment because of the ways they incorporate American archetypes, iconography, and themes into their work while still adhering to Japanese cultural concerns. -

I’ve been with Anime Fusion since it was a conversation between three people in the wave pool at Valleyfair. We all had the destination in mind, but I doubt any of us could have envisioned the path that lay ahead. It was a road pitted with challenges: resource shortfalls, communication issues, staff changes, conflicting ideas and the sheer enormity of what we’d taken on. At its end we find ourselves in a place unlike what any of us imagined, but a place that is our own, a place we’re excited to share with you. This is Anime Fusion. A home for the best of what anime is today, but a place that also remembers its roots. Like the convention itself, anime has come a long way. In style, content, medium and structure, modern anime is very different from the classics, but without what came before, we wouldn’t be where we are now. The past gives us our foundation and the building blocks of what’s to come. Its high points leave us fond memories to treasure, and its rough spots teach us skills to improve. So go forth into our world. Embrace the new, but value the road that brought you here. Heather Bufkin Convention Chair Anime Fusion 2012 A Note from the Vice Chair Don’t break the hotel. -

Trigun (Anime) Jump
Trigun (Anime) Jump Created by Glymmer Planet Gunsmoke. A dry, dusty ball of sand that no human was ever meant to live on. But live here they do thanks to an event that occurred 150 years ago that robbed humanity of its bright and happy future. On this planet small settlements and communities have taken shape gathered around “Plants”. These large reactors were originally intended to work as an energy source now jury-rigged to act as stopgap terraforming devices to provide food, water and minor protection from the elements to humanity. Barring a few exceptions, the people of this planet have essentially reverted to a state very much resembling a Wild West steampunk society. You arrive a short time before the events of the show, will you help this world to survive, or perhaps even thrive? Or will you prey upon the weak and helpless, adding your name to the ever growing list of outlaws who feed their greed upon the suffering of others? You will spend 10 years on this planet, but take care Jumper for even if you survive the elements; vicious outlaws, assassins and more await you. To help you survive you will be granted 1000cp to spend. Location: Roll 1d6 to determine your starting location, or pay 50cp to choose 1. Missing July: You wake up in the middle of a ruined crater that was once July, the third of seven great cities on this planet. Now called the “Missing” city of July this once prosperous place was wiped from the face of the earth one night by none other than the infamous outlaw Vash the Stampede, better known as the Humanoid Typhoon.
