2/15/2016 Biography | KateChopin.org Home Biography The Awakening Short Stories News About Us THE KATE CHOPIN INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY Biography American author Kate Chopin (1850–1904) wrote two published novels and about a hundred short stories in the 1890s. Most of her fiction is set in Louisiana and most of her bestknown work focuses on the lives of sensitive, intelligent women. Her short stories were well received in her own time and were published by some of America’s most prestigious magazines—Vogue, the Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Young People, Youth’s Companion, and the Century. A few stories were syndicated by the American Press Association. Her stories appeared also in her two published collections, Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897), both of which received good reviews from critics across the country. About a third of her stories are children’s stories —those published in or submitted to children’s magazines or those similar in subject or theme to those that were. By the late 1890s Kate Chopin was well known among American readers of magazine fiction. Her early novel At Fault (1890) had not been much noticed by the public, but The Awakening (1899) was widely condemned. Critics called it morbid, vulgar, and disagreeable. Willa Cather, who would become a well known twentiethcentury American author, labeled it trite and sordid. Some modern scholars have written that the novel was banned at Chopin’s hometown library in St. Louis, but this claim has not been able to be verified, although in 1902, the Evanston, Illinois, Public Library removed The Awakening from its open shelves—and the book has been challenged twice in Missouri History Museum, St. -

Methvin for the Master of~A=r~t=s~ _ (name of student) (degree) in English presented on 11 May. 1990 (major) (date) Title: Kate Chopin's Fiction: A Twentieth Century Critical Reappraisal ~ Abstract Approved: Women writers in the second half of the nineteenth century were revising the world view they had inherited from a society that said women mattered less than men did, a society that failed to recognize the authenticity of a woman's emotions, needs, and desires. These literary women often resorted to symbolic narratives to express their feelings of constriction, exclusion, and dispossession. Kate Chopin was one of the most daring and courageous female writers during this period, a fact which became the basis for a complete rejection of her works by a male-dominated society who misread and misinterpreted the implications she presents. Chopin and her works were severely criticized because of her realistic portrayal of women' s situations depicting ideas which were not socially acceptable at that time. Chopin dealt with dangerous themes---dangerous, that is, to men and masculine vanity. She detailed assertive, unorthodox women characters, unsatisfactory marriages, the specters of illicit love, adultery, incest, and prostitution. She was the first woman writer in this country to accept passion as a legitimate sUbject for serious, outspoken fiction. Her truthful depiction of woman's life in American society brought the wrath of male critics to bear both on her works and on her personal life. Chopin explores many themes, the most prominent of which is the awakening or reoccurrence of sexual passion in women and men. -

Daniel Hill observes that the upscale tastes of Vogue’s readers originally were reflected in the magazine’s reviews of the season’s latest plays, art, exhibits, and books. The fashion articles provided clothing advice for social events rather than the reporting on couture trends. Two recurring columns were “Of Interest to Her” and “As Seen by Him,” which detailed what was appropriate to wear and when (8). In the infant years of the magazine, revenue from advertisements was not a high priority, so ads for couture fashions were run alongside those for basic long johns (Hill 8).
