Chopin, Kate, 1851-1904 from Literature Online biography Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was an American writer who came to prominence at the fin de siècle with her short stories, many about Louisiana life. She was admired in her lifetime chiefly for her 'charming' depictions of 'local colour', and the work now regarded as her great achievement, the novel The Awakening (1899), was accorded a decidedly mixed reception. Since the late 1960s this novel has come to be regarded as a classic of American literature and is a staple of literature and women's studies university courses, though it is not yet very familiar to general readers. Bearing in mind The Awakening , the story of a woman's sense of oppression in conventional marriage and her burning desire (not uncomplicatedly fulfilled) for liberty, modern critics tend to value most highly those of Chopin's short stories that, in her lifetime, were regarded as distasteful and even unrespectable, dealing with sexuality and the less than fairytale aspects of relationships between the sexes. Chopin was not a campaigning author, for all that she foregrounded socially uncomfortable issues in a way that was considered 'advanced': though some of her characters chafe at conventional expectations, she carefully presented herself as a mother and homemaker, writing only in the interstices of domestic responsibilities; and her treatment of class and race is not always as enlightened as her modern critics would like. Sue Asbee has commented that 'there is a sense in which it is disappointing that such a forward- thinking woman campaigned for nobody's rights'. -

Chopin lived and wrote in a time when American women began to both challenge the patriarchy and question their lack of rights, especially in the late 1890s. Though Chopin separated herself from the movement, many of her works pertaining to female consciousness clearly address this idea of female empowerment. When we look to Chopin’s more daring works about women— those stories published in Vogue (specifically between 1894 and 1897) and her acclaimed novel The Awakening (published in 1899)—we can typify these women into two categories: the woman who pursues her desires despite social obligations and the woman who conforms to social obligations and neglects her desires. In response to the overwhelming masculine authority of American society, The Women’s Suffrage Movement was created to challenge the patriarchy and redefine women’s roles in society. During the nineteenth century, The Movement organized important events such as The Convention at Seneca Falls in 1848 and gave way to “feminist” writings like Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s two-volume work, The Woman’s Bible. -

As a female writer in the late 19th century American society fraud with patriarchal prejudices on the woman folk, Chopin needed a voice and a style that is unique. By sublimating her experiences in art, she attained her objectives where she establishes ambivalence in her character paintings and subject matter. Even though traces of real- life experiences are discernible in this story, she paints philosophic and controversial characters who are symbolic incarnation of multiple personalities and important figures whose lives like her father, mother and her husband, haunted her for the most part of her life. A psycho-biographical reading of the text, therefore, permits us to perceive “The Story of an Hour” as a signpost to the author’s struggles and psychological expression of her artistic cravings. Introduction Kate Chopin’s veiled personalities in her works attracted multiple interpretations by critics who read her works at the backdrop of beliefs in the 19th century that the male writers excelled in writing more than the woman because they eschewed domesticity. -

2/15/2016 Biography | KateChopin.org Home Biography The Awakening Short Stories News About Us THE KATE CHOPIN INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY Biography American author Kate Chopin (1850–1904) wrote two published novels and about a hundred short stories in the 1890s. Most of her fiction is set in Louisiana and most of her bestknown work focuses on the lives of sensitive, intelligent women. Her short stories were well received in her own time and were published by some of America’s most prestigious magazines—Vogue, the Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Young People, Youth’s Companion, and the Century. A few stories were syndicated by the American Press Association. Her stories appeared also in her two published collections, Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897), both of which received good reviews from critics across the country. About a third of her stories are children’s stories —those published in or submitted to children’s magazines or those similar in subject or theme to those that were. By the late 1890s Kate Chopin was well known among American readers of magazine fiction. Her early novel At Fault (1890) had not been much noticed by the public, but The Awakening (1899) was widely condemned. Critics called it morbid, vulgar, and disagreeable. Willa Cather, who would become a well known twentiethcentury American author, labeled it trite and sordid. Some modern scholars have written that the novel was banned at Chopin’s hometown library in St. Louis, but this claim has not been able to be verified, although in 1902, the Evanston, Illinois, Public Library removed The Awakening from its open shelves—and the book has been challenged twice in Missouri History Museum, St. -

Daniel Hill observes that the upscale tastes of Vogue’s readers originally were reflected in the magazine’s reviews of the season’s latest plays, art, exhibits, and books. The fashion articles provided clothing advice for social events rather than the reporting on couture trends. Two recurring columns were “Of Interest to Her” and “As Seen by Him,” which detailed what was appropriate to wear and when (8). In the infant years of the magazine, revenue from advertisements was not a high priority, so ads for couture fashions were run alongside those for basic long johns (Hill 8).
