  • From Disney to Disaster: the Disney Corporation’S Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks
From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

  • The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway  by Nate Jones
The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway By Nate Jones Spend a few minutes reading blog comments, and you might assume that Anne Hathaway’s approval rating falls somewhere between that of Boko Haram and paper cuts — but you'd actually be completely wrong. According to E-Poll likability data we factored into Vulture's Most Valuable Stars list, the braying hordes of Hathaway haters are merely a very vocal minority. The numbers say that most people actually like her. Even more shocking? Who they like her more than. In calculating their E-Score Celebrity rankings, E-Poll asked people how much they like a particular celebrity on a six-point scale, which ranged from "like a lot" to "dislike a lot." The resulting Likability percentage is the number of respondents who indicated they either "like" Anne Hathaway or "like Anne Hathaway a lot." Hathaway's 2014 Likability percentage was 67 percent — up from 66 percent in 2013 — which doesn't quite make her Will Smith (85 percent), Sandra Bullock (83 percent), Jennifer Lawrence (76 percent), or even Liam Neeson (79 percent), but it does put her well above plenty of stars whose appeal has never been so furiously impugned on Twitter. Why? Well, why not? Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and seemingly a nice person. The objections to her boiled down to two main points: She tries too hard, and she's overexposed. But she's been absent from the screen since 2012'sLes Misérables, so it's hard to call her overexposed now. And trying too hard isn't the worst thing in the world, especially when you consider the alternative.

Killing Zac Efron, Literally By:Caitlyn Homolya On December 29, 2019, Zac Efron was rushed to the hospital in Brisbane, Australia after he caught a form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection. Efron was filming his new show, Killing Zac Efron, in Papua New Guinea when he caught this disease. Efron is now stable and out of the hospital after being in there for three weeks. Zac Efron, first known for the High School Musical movies playing Troy Bolton, is an actor most teenage girls love for his good looks and his singing. Makenna Dew is one of those teenage girls, “When I heard Zac Efron almost died, I almost started crying because he was my childhood.” Efron is known for so much more, with a net worth of around 24 million and has acted in over 200 movies. Efron has impacted many lives being an actor and is loved by many, so a lot of people were heartbroken to hear that Efron got sick and was hospitalized. Efron kept it quiet while he was in the hospital so he could heal in peace, and then after he was healthy and the typoid-like disease was out of him, he came out and said he was okay after speculation about him was spread. Efron was filming the show, Killing Zac Efron, so he was going to be off the grid for three weeks in the jungle with no luxuries. In any case, the show's title appeared to be worryingly close to the line as he wound up on a “life or death” helicopter trip to Australia after he was hit with this serious illness.

  • Five Lessons the New George Clooney Movie Money Monster Teaches Us About Crisis Communications
Crisis comms to the extreme: Lee Gates' (George Clooney) life depends on what Diane Lester (Caitriona Balfe) says in this live cross Sep 09, 2016 09:16 +08 Five lessons the new George Clooney movie Money Monster teaches us about crisis communications There's a particularly tense scene in the new George Clooney movie "Money Monster", which should be of great interest to media spokespeople who are confronted with a crisis situation. Clooney, playing fictional financial TV host Lee Gates (here's lookin' at you, Jim Cramer) is threatened live on air by a gunman, who lost his life savings investing in troubled Ibis Clear Capital after it announced a big loss. Gates had recommended the algotrading company's stock on his show. Gates' down-the-line guest, Ibis' Chief Communications Officer Diane Lester (Caitriona Balfe), delivers rehearsed holding statements to the camera in a live cross. The gunman doesn't buy it, putting Gates' life perilously in danger. Gates' producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts), commenting in Gates' earpiece from the TV control room, doesn't buy it either. The dialogue goes something like this (spoiler alert!): Gates (to camera): We're going to talk to Diane Lester, she's the PR lady… Fenn (in his earpiece): She's the CCO. Gates: …the Chief Communications Officer at Ibis. Diane? Lester (to camera): First, let me start off by saying on behalf of everyone here at Ibis, we are prepared to do whatever we can to get you to put down that gun, Mr Budwell. Now, I understand that you have offered to compensate him for his losses personally, Lee? Well, we are absolutely willing to do the same if it helps to put an end to all this.

  • 826Michigan to Host Adva...Ew
APRIL 19, 2012 - 5:24PM 826michigan to host advance screening of 'The FiveYear Engagement' and Q&A with crew BY MATT EASTON Last year it seemed everyone (of legal age) had a bar tale revolving around their beer-fueled interactions with the actor most likely to be found on a college campus drinking casually: Jason Segel. Why “most likely?” Because, in the majority of his films Segel plays the sort of guy you’d expect to find enjoying himself in a bar, bringing a sort of life to the occasion but never shoving himself into the center of attention. These are just assumptions based off his roles, but upon hearing the stories told about Segel in those weeks he was in Ann Arbor, his personality doesn’t appear to stray far from the characters he plays. Relaxed, dude-like and fun-loving; he seems like someone worth hanging outwith. Of course, as much as we might like to believe Segel came up to Michigan for some quality time with a bunch of students, the truth is he came to film scenes for his latest film, “The Five-Year Engagement.” The movie tells of the trials faced by a couple’s five-year engagement, one of which is Emily Blunt’s character receiving a position at the University of Michigan, forcing a long-distance move. Written by Segel and Nicholas Stoller (“The Muppets”), “The Five-Year Engagement” is one of the select few films that have chosen their setting to be Ann Arbor (alongside “Answer This!” and perhaps less obviously, “Jumper”).
