Welcome to Highworth Town A warm welcome to Highworth Town for this Boxing Day Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division fixture here at the New Gerard Buxton Ground. We hope all from Highworth enjoy their Meet your local team.... second visit to the New Gerard Buxton Ground and we wish them a safe journey home. A special welcome to our former management team of Jeff Roberts, Ant Brown and Drew Youngsam for what will be their first visit to the New Gerard Buxton Ground as participants in a Richard James are pleased to have recently joined the game here. With this being a local derby we are hoping for a large crowd. Last season this Royal Wootton Bassett High Street. Hopefully Santa brought you everything you wanted yesterday although that is certainly not the case for Royal Wootton Bassett Town manager Rich Hunter. With both Sam Packer and Steve With our network of six additional o€ ces located Yeardley expected to be suspended for this game and with keeper Curtis Meare amongst throughout Swindon and its surrounding villages, Jo Bunkasem others not available it is going to be something of a different looking Bassett side here this Richard James have been helping people move in the afternoon for what is probably our toughest fixture of the season against our near neighbours who are in a rich vein of form. When we played Highworth at their place earlier in the season Wiltshire area for over 23 years. We have a large team they then had a large number of players missing due to injury, evidence that these things can of local experienced sta all looking forward to getting even themselves out over the season I guess. That earlier meeting at the Elms in August saw to know and become part of the Royal Wootton Bassett the two sides share six goals in a thrilling encounter. Bassett came back from 3-1 down to share community. the points thanks to goals from Steve Robertson (2) and Sam Packer.

We are very proud to have been asked to support the Highworth currently sit in 5th place with 42 points from their opening 22 league games, having Royal Wootton Bassett Football Club and are looking won thirteen, lost six and drawn three games. Last week they made it throughto the semi-finals forward to a successful season ahead. of the Wiltshire Senior Cup with a 2-0 home win over Bradford Town, our conquerors in the previous round the week before. Highworth are joined in the semi-finals by near neighbours and Josh McHugh their biggest rivals Swindon Supermarine, Salisbury and Calne Town. I suspect manager Jeff Alex Hornby Roberts will be hoping to draw his former club Calne when the draw is finally made. Managing Director Lydney Town Finally we have got one over Lydney Town. After suffering four straight single goal defeats against our Gloucestershire bogey side, Bassett were able to record a 2-0 victory against them Are you thinking about moving? and book their place in the quarter finals of the Floodlit Cup in our last game here at the New Gerard Buxton Ground. It took one hell of a struggle, 120 minutes of closely-fought action and a couple of nail-biting moments to get there though. However, in the end an extra time brace from Whether you are thinking about selling or the ever-reliable Steve Robertson separated the sides before the game suffered problems with the floodlights - somewhat ironic given the competition the teams were playing in. letting, contact us today for an up to date market appraisal of your home, or š nd us Deborah Reay The game should really have been settled in the closing stages of normal time when Dale online below and use our online valuation Richards found the back of the net, only to see what appeared to be a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out for by an erroneous offside flag. Ladies Team The Ladies side continued their great run of late on Sunday week. A dramatic, last minute, comeback victory ensured Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies' win streak was extended to four games as they beat Almondsbury UWE 3-2 in a crucial pre-Christmas encounter. Hayley Huckin was the Bassett hero as she netted all three of her side's goals in the second half after they had fallen behind 2-0 in the opening period against a side who entered the game in 2nd place in the league. While Bassett still sit in 5th place despite their win, the result means they keep the upper hand in what is a tight four team battle for second spot behind runaway leaders St Nicholas Reserves. They are currently three points behind Forest of Dean, who currently occupy that position after being awarded their game against Cirencester Town Ladies. However, holding three games in hand over Almondsbury and Forest of Dean and two over AEK Boco Development - teams Bassett have seen off in their last three fixtures, Becky Gammon's side are in a position where they can make 2nd their own and build a cushion, assuming their outstanding form continues into the New Year.

Youth Sides Our Under 13s Blues booked their place in the quarter finals of the Wiltshire County Cup with an 8-1 triumph against Lydiard Youth Blue. It was their latest convincing victory in the county competition, and in the four games they have played to make it to the last eight they have plundered 39 goals. Against Lydiard, Otis Lewis scored a hat-trick, and Marcel Lewis, Lewis- James Bexon-Shaw, Jack Osbaldeston and Matt Purcell all found the back of the net once. The Under 14 Blues were also in County Cup action. However, their run in the competition was ended by Highworth Town Juniors 'H' Under 15s, who won 11-0.

James Smith Royal Wootton Bassett Town Football Club would like to extend its condolences to the family and friends of James Smith, who has sadly passed away following a short battle against cancer. The son of Royal Wootton Bassett Cricket Club chairman Rod Smith and a keen cricketer himself, James also played for the football club, featuring for the Under 18s and Reserve teams. A popular, friendly figure, he will be sorely missed, and our thoughts and prayers are with those close to him at this difficult time.

Mark Edmonds More sad news with the passing of Mark Edmonds, League Secretary of the Toolstation Western League following a brave battle against cancer. Mark's football commitments included many years as a referee before he joined the Wiltshire FA as the Discipline Secretary. He was appointed as General Secretary of the Toolstation Western League at the start of the 2014-15 Season and continued to hold that position until his sad passing a fortnight ago. I got to appreciate what a tremendous Wiltshire football enthusiast and servant Mark was after he invited me to be a friend on Facebook. This was after I had contributed some information to the excellent Wiltshire Football Nostalgia Facebook Group that Mark had created. Right to the end Mark was still attending games despite his illness and is a major loss to the game of football in Wiltshire. Mark leaves a wife Sarah, son Jordan and daughter Aimee and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Best Wishes and Next Up Next home game here sees Lydney Town make a swift return on New Year’s Eve, this time in a league encounter. Interesting to note that, assuming today’s and the Lydney game do not fall victims to the weather, we will have played 14 of our home games before the turn of the year with just 3 to come in the New Year. Enjoy the game and hopefully a win for Royal Wootton Bassett Town against our near neighbours in this tough fixture.

No balls in 19-Nov-16 W Prem Highworth Town 4 Binfield 0 Corrick 2, Hall-Cousins, Taylor 75 bags but the excitement was just the same. 26-Nov-16 W Bluefin Cup Highworth Town 2 Oxford City Nomads 0 Edenborough, Alder 48 3-Dec-16 W Prem Highworth Town 3 Longlevens 0 Edenborough 2, Stanners 84 Thirty two teams featured, though only eight from 6-Dec-16 W Prem Brimscombe & Thrupp 2 Highworth Town 4 Corrick, Joyce, McCarthy, Gleed 33 Division One (Premiership in New Money) and 8 10-Dec-16 L Prem Highworth Town 1 Thatcham Town 3 Gleed 87 from each of the other 3 divisions. . Therefore, the 14-Dec-16 W WSC Highworth Town 2 Bradford Town 0 Gleed, McCarthy 64 makers played heavily on 'giant killing'. Often you 17-Dec-16 W Prem Binfield 1 Highworth Town 2 Davoille, Ferris 79 would get ' Arsenal will play Darlington' or 'Tottenham will play York City'. In fact more often Goalscorers Goals Strike-Rate than not, you would finish up with 'Wrexham v Aysa Corrick 21 75.0% Rochdale in the Cup Final’!! Or ' Stockport County, Ashley Edenborough 20 100.0% conquerors of Manchester United and Chelsea in the earlier rounds v Aston Villa' Kieron Gleed 15 48.4% (who were, it should be pointed out, a Third Division team when this game was manufactured). Fabian McCarthy 7 26.9% Ryan Stanners 7 24.1% Chris Taylor 3 16.7% It was all great fun. You had scores of 5-0, 6-4 or 5-5. Second replays, Tom Cole 2 8.0% neutral grounds the lot. Often you would have arguments with your mates Bradley Clark 1 100.0% when their favourite teams were knocked out. Jordan Roberts 1 50.0% Aaron Ferris 1 33.3% For me the only disappointment with this excellent game was that QPR Steve May 1 7.7% had not been included. However, the makers knew how to deal with this Kent Kauppinen 1 5.6% and you could change some of the teams using the blank cards that came Paul Alder 1 5.3% with the set. So in my Wembley there was always a QPR team and they Jon Davoille 1 5.0% strangely they often won the Cup in the Smedley household (so as you Tony Joyce 1 4.3% can see the game wasn’t that realistic). I even remember keeping a list of Luke Hall-Cousins 1 4.0% historic winners and I am sure Darlington had won it more times than Manchester United, certainly more times than the enemy from SW6.

Gibson Games bought out a version in the 1990’s (see right) that my boys had but it was not quite the same, the board for a start looked completely different. QPR still did not feature but interestingly neither did Chelsea. This was now the era of the new Premier League and the 8 representatives of the league were Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leeds Utd, Liverpool, Manchester Utd, Newcastle, Notts Forest and Tottenham. Swindon Town were in there though as a Second Division side. Anyone fancy a game? Previous Meetings & Stats Supplementary Cup Season 2016-17

Mind the Guppy!

Congratulations to Andy Guppy, who was crowned as the 2015-16 RWBTFC Fantasy Football League champion for a second season in a row this week! In retaining his fantasy crown, Guppy avoided the fate of reigning champions of the actual Premier League, Chelsea, whose title defence quickly descended into a mediocre scrap for a mid-table position. That's not to say that it was a walk in the park for the Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserve team player though.

As with last season, Guppy's winning margin was a slim one. Totaling 2,240 points, he finished just sixteen ahead of Reserves stablemate Ben Brown and 2013-14 winner Michael Case. Furthermore, with seventeen weeks of the season to go, Guppy stood a whopping 100 points behind long-time league leader Scott Large. However, Large's advantage - like the bubbles in the anthem of his beloved West Ham United - faded and died, and with eight weeks remaining he had slipped to fourth place. Guppy by now was in front, albeit by a slim margin. Yet, showing the same mentality as the real Premier League winners Leicester City, he ground out solid point totals the rest of the way. There was a brief moment after the 33rd gameweek when Brown pulled level on 1,906 points, while his lead stood at a mere five ahead of the penultimate round. Nevertheless, canny selections meant Guppy withstood the pressure of those breathing down his neck to once again etch his name on the Fantasy RWBTFC FantasyLeague Football trophy. League Previous Meetings He now joins Sam Lawro, who finished in fifth place, as a two-time winner. Match Reports

League roll continues New Gerard Buxton Ground, 10th December 2016 Royal Wootton Bassett Town enjoyed a rather comfortable afternoon as they recorded their fourth straight league victory with a stylish 4-0 triumph against Henley Town. Rich Hunter's team's attacking football was as slick as the damp Gerard Buxton Sports Ground pitch and, after going into half time with a slender advantage despite controlling proceedings, they swept aside their Oxfordshire opponents in the second period. Sam Packer, playing the majority of the game in his favoured number ten role, was in particularly devilish form. More or less unplayable, Henley had no answer to the Bassett playmaker, who must have had a role in close to a dozen of the chances the hosts created. He played a key role in the game's opener on nineteen minutes, perfectly weighting a return pass to set free right winger Dan Bailey, who cut the ball back from the by-line for Steve Robertson to provide an emphatic finish into the top right corner. That goal had followed a somewhat nervous start, punctuated by a third minute opportunity which fell to Henley's Chris Hood after a poor touch from Steve Yeardley inside his own penalty area. However, Hood's snap shot was fortunately turned around the post by a fast reacting Curtis Meare. Once they were ahead though, Bassett were in control. Packer came close to doubling the lead moments after Robertson had struck, hammering a 20-yard shot from the right edge of the area narrowly past the opposite post. Adam Corcoran's far post header from Dale Richards' corner then appeared to be destined for the back of the net, yet was deflected wide. On 33 minutes, Packer, aided by a slip from his marker Mitch Cooper, raced onto Corcoran's clipped ball over the top and found himself with only 'keeper Matthew Hill to beat. Opting to attempt a lob from just outside the area, rather than advance on goal, he again was a matter of inches away from taking his tally of goals for the season to four. Not that he let the frustration of failing to register a goal affect his performance. He continued to be at heart of Bassett's forays forward. His cut back and Robertson's deft touch on the edge of the area set Bailey in with seven minutes to go until the break, but no goal was forthcoming as Hill raced off his line to take the ball away from Bailey's feet. Packer's through ball then set an overlapping Bailey in on goal. Again the winger was thwarted by Hill though as the 'keeper parried his low effort from a tight angle across the face of goal. Bassett's half time lead should really have been more. But they quickly established a more comfortable advantage after half time. Yeardley played a brilliant pass to Packer in the right corner, and his cross into the danger area just evaded Robertson. The Bassett forward was “Bassett Pies” quickly able to jump on the loose ball, steering in cross from the left edge, which Dale Delicious pies, made using fresh, local ingredients Richard guided home with a header from ten yards. Chances kept coming Bassett's way. After racing onto a Robertson's through ball, Packer unselfishly sought to play a square pass back when in on goal, but the forward could only snatch at his effort affording Hill a relatively comfortable save. Richards soon nearly had a second when his stooping header from Bailey's corner wasn't gathered clearly by the Henley stopper. However, Hill was able to dive on the ball just as it appeared set to roll over the line. The game was eventually killed off with twenty minutes remaining. Substitute Kias Bonner-Shaw cut inside from the right and saw a shot from a tight angle blocked. The rebound fell to Robertson who was never going to miss. It was quickly four as Ryan Withers, another substitute who injected dangerous pace, raced clear before coolly picking out the bottom corner when one-on-one. Moving the ball around at will, Bassett were in full control. And come full time it could well have been six or seven.

Kiosk Indeed, Robertson should probably have at least completed his hat-trick. He saw a close- range strike from Bonner-Shaw's cutback swatted away before then failing to get a toe on the end of the same player's low fizzing cross. Finally, with two minutes remaining he put a shot from an angle across the face of goal after latching onto Packer's superb defence splitting Steak & Ale – Chicken & Mushroom – Spicy Turkey pass which had been played with the outside of his right boot. Man of the Match: Sam Packer – Henley had no answers for the playmaker, as he Sold at Kiosk during Match Days – Access via Stadium Pitch constantly found a way in behind their backline. It was probably a welcome relief for the visitors when Packer dropped into a deeper role late in the game. Buildbase F.A. Vase Half Time Quiz - Name That Tune
