It received positive reviews from critics and shot to the number one spot on the Eurochart Hot 100, where it stayed for 12 weeks from June to early September 2004. [4] It topped the individual charts in France, Germany and Austria for more than three months, reaching three in the UK and 72 at the US Pop 100. The song became the fourth best-selling single of the 21st century in France with 1,170,000 copies sold. [5] The original song was made remarkable in the United States through a viral numa numa video in which vlogger Gary Brolsma dances to the song. A remix called Numa Numa 2 by (from O-Zone) featuring Marley Waters was posted to YouTube on September 12, 2018[6] (not to be confused with the 2006 video brolsma of the same name, but which is not related to Dragostea Din Tei). O-Zone version A still image from music video O-Zone Lyrics The most famous text is repeated line nu mă, nu mă iei from the chorus, hence the name Numa Numa song. Nu mă, nu mă iei (literally not me, not me take) is usually translated as just won't make me. The whole chorus, which also contains the title of the song, runs: Vrei să pleci dar nu mă, nu mă iei, Nu mă iei, nu mă, nu mă, nu mă iei. Chipul tău și dragostea din tei, Mi-amintesc de ochii tăi. which means in translation:[7] (You) want to leave, but do not want to marry me, I do not want to marry me, do not want me to take your face and love from the lime, remind me of your eyes. Background and Writing The song was written and composed by Dan Bălan, and the original version was sung by Bălan, Arsenie Todiraș, and the Sârbu Council. The single was first released in 2003 in Romania, where the band lived and produced at the time, and in spring 2004 in most other European countries, where it became a summer hit. Back in 2006, the song was still at the bottom eastern European singles charts. The O-Zone version was the most popular in the whole of Europe, with the exception of Italy, where only discos knew it. [citation needed] The cover version of the song performed by Romanian singer Haiducii, who released the song in Europe around the same time, was more popular in Italy and Sweden (reaching number 1 in the singles charts). Dragostea Din Tei also inspired a number of parody videos distributed over the Internet, especially Gary Brolsma's popular Numa Numa Dance video in 2004, so named because of the line nu mă nu mă iei. Numa Numa Dance, which first appeared on flash site Newgrounds.com, has become so remarkable that it has sparked numerous parodies of the video itself in the United States over the years since 2004. [8] Overall the single reached number one in over 27 countries and went on to sell more than 8 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling singles of all time. [9] Part of the choir is inspired by Mozart Piano Sonáta No. 17 (Mozart) Allegro. [citation needed] The English-language version of the American-British-Australian edition of DiscO-Zone contains the English version of the song by Dan Bălan and Lucas Prata. This version focuses on This Is Me, Picasso's text from the original to provide the theme to an artist who has lost his muse. Bălan and Prata made an English recording of Dragostea Din Tei called Ma Ya Hi on The Today Show on 22 March 2015. Unlike the original recording, however, this version was not so successful when she was 72 years old on the Billboard Pop 100. [83] The spoof song was released by Romanian metal band Trooper under the name Zorzon, as a bonus song on one of their albums. In Spain, comedy duo Los Morancos made a spoof version called here (queer you), also sometimes referred to as pluma pluma gay (literally feather feathers gay, meaning sissy sissy gay), which contained several references to homosexuality. It has become popular in many clubs across Hispanic America. Hungarian Minisztár released the music video Dragostea Din Tei in 2005. The sect song in praise of Rabbi Nachman, titled Nach Nachma Nachman Meuman, uses music from dragostea din tei song for one of its most famous releases. The Indonesian version of this song was released by the Indonesian band Barakatak called Buka-Bukaan (Open and Open) in 2005 (on YouTube in 2008).
