Mycena Carmeliana Fungus Factsheet 35 / 2009 Science Division Mycena carmeliana Richard Robinson, Science, Manjimup, [email protected] © Richard Robinson The genus Mycena contains many species of fungi. They are all decomposers, colonising and rotting dead organic material ranging from litter and small twigs to large logs. Most species of Mycena, including Mycena carmeliana fruit in the autumn. In Western Australia, Mycena carmeliana prefers to grow on dead jarrah logs and large fallen branches that are in the very early stages of decay—generally before the bark has fallen off. In other parts of southern and eastern Australia it can also be found fruiting on litter in young radiata pine plantations as well as eucalypt wood and logs. Caps are generally 1-2cm diameter with a brown centre and radial grooves around the margin. The flesh of the cap is very thin. Gills are white, generally with two lengths. Stems are up to 3cm tall, slender, white, almost translucent, and have a distinctive ginger or chestnut coloured base which resembles a short fluffy sock. The whole fruit body has a weak to strong bleach- or ammonia-like odour. Like many Mycenas, Mycena carmeliana grows in large colonies, protruding from behind the bark through cracks or along the edge of the bark where a portion of the wood is bare. The scientific name refers to the ancient Greek/Latin term for mushroom and the describing scientist (Dr Cheryl Grgurinovic) honouring her mother. Mycosphere 6(1), 19–42, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/6/1/4 Abstract A study of diversity of coprophilous species of Conocybe was carried out in Punjab state of India during the years 2007 to 2011. This research paper represents 22 collections belonging to 16 Conocybe species growing on five diverse dung types. The species include Conocybe albipes, C. apala, C. brachypodii, C. crispa, C. fuscimarginata, C. lenticulospora, C. leucopus, C. magnicapitata, C. microrrhiza var. coprophila var. nov., C. moseri, C. rickenii, C. subpubescens, C. subxerophytica var. subxerophytica, C. subxerophytica var. brunnea, C. uralensis and C. velutipes. For all these taxa, dung types on which they were found growing are mentioned and their distinctive characters are described and compared with similar taxa along with a key for their identification. The taxonomy of ten taxa is discussed along with the drawings of morphological and anatomical features. Conocybe microrrhiza var. coprophila is proposed as a new variety. Spinosae, is proposed for species of the agaric genus Mycena that have both thin-walled pileocystidia and diverticulate hyphae on the pileipellis. Two new species, Mycena mridula and M. rasada, are proposed in the new section and five other species of Mycena, currently assigned to other sections, are considered as belonging to it. A key is provided for all species included in the proposed section. Key words – Agaricales – Basidiomycota – biodiversity – Mycenaceae – taxonomy Introduction There are several species of Mycena (Mycenaceae, Agaricales, Basidiomycota) that possess hairs or spines over the pileus. Mycena sect. Longisetae is characterized by the presence of erect, thick-walled pileosetae at least in the primordial stage. About six species of Mycena sect. Basipedes (M. stylobates (Pers.) P. Kumm., M. tenuispinosa J. Favre, M. spinosa Métrod, M. quadratipes Métrod, M. pseudoseta Desjardin, Boonprat. & Hywel-Jones, M. mimicoseta Desjardin, Boonprat. & Hywel-Jones) also have pileus spines, but in those species, the spines are formed of bundles of pileipellis hyphae. Apart from these two groups of spinose species of Mycena, there are a few spinose species, currently scattered in several sections that have both hyphae of the pileipellis with excrescences, and thin-walled pileocystidia.

Although several monographic treatments of the genus have been published over the past 100 years, the genus remains largely undocumented for many regions worldwide. This study represents the first comprehensive taxonomic investigation of Mycena species found within California. The goal of the present research is to provide a resource for the identification of Mycena species within the state, and thereby serve as a basis for further investigation of taxonomic, evolutionary, and ecological relationships within the genus. Complete macro- and microscopic descriptions of the species occurring in California have been compiled based upon examination of fresh material and preserved herbarium collections. The present work recognizes a total of 61 Mycena species occurring within California, sixteen of which are new reports, and 3 of which represent previously undescribed taxa. The holotype of Mycena pseudotenax has been studied and compared with material collected in Andalusia (Southern Spain). Macroscopical and microscopical characters indicate a close relationship to Hydropus scabripes, from which it differs in the structure of the pileipellis and size of cystidia and spores. The study of typical material of Hydropus scabripes f. safranopes (Malenc.) has revealed that this taxon is a synonym of Mycena pseudotenax. The combination Hydropus pseudotenax comb. nov. is proposed. Finally, the taxonomic position of this species is discussed and a comparison with other closely related taxa is made. Keywords: Mycena pseudotenax, Hydropus scabripes f. safranopes, taxonomy, Andalusia, Spain. During some mycological journeys conducted through the autumn of 1992 in Andalusia (Southern Spain), a collection identified as Mycena sp. „in situ" was found, growing abundantly on Pinus halepensis humus. After microscopical examination, this material revealed characters such as non-amyloid trama, amyloid spores, intracellular pigments and very protruding pleurocystidia.

During the study of the mycoflora of Gallura, NE Sardinia, started in 2000, the second author, M. C. has paid special attention to the fungi growing in urban or suburban zones or in areas subjected to strong anthropogenic influence. To this aim some urban areas of Olbia city and its outskirts have been explored and, particularly, the city park "Fausto Noce", abounding in fungi and composed by many flower-beds well kept and regularly sprinkled, with an arboreous covering of Phoenix, Populus and Sci/i.x. In this place many interesting species, some of which new to science, have been found (CONTU 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007; CONTU & BON 2000; CONTU & ORTEGA 2002; CONTU & HAUSKNECHT 2007).
