NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. A PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF PLANT DISTRIBUTION IN OHIO.* JOHN H. SCHAFFNER. The following data are presented as a preliminary basis for field work in determining the natural plant areas of Ohio. It is hoped that the botanists of the State will begin active study of local conditions with a view to determine natural or transition boundaries as well as cataloging local associations. The distri- bution lists are based on herbarium material and more than 15 years of sporadic botanizing in the state. Of course, distribution at present indicates to a considerable extent merely the distri- bution of enthusiastic botanists and their favorite collecting grounds. Nevertheless, enough has been done to indicate in a rough way the general character of our plant geography. The kind of data most important in indicating characteristic areas are as follows:— 1. Meteorological data. 2. Geology, including the nature of the surface rock and soil. 3. Physiography and topography. 4. The actual distribution of characteristic species of plants and to some extent of animals. In Ohio, the following important maps may be studied in this connection:— Meteorology. By Otto E. Coastal Landscaping in Massachusetts Plant List This PDF document provides additional information to supplement the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Coastal Landscaping website. The plants listed below are good choices for the rugged coastal conditions of Massachusetts. The Coastal Beach Plant List, Coastal Dune Plant List, and Coastal Bank Plant List give recommended species for each specified location (some species overlap because they thrive in various conditions). Photos and descriptions of selected species can be found on the following pages: • Grasses and Perennials • Shrubs and Groundcovers • Trees CZM recommends using native plants wherever possible. The vast majority of the plants listed below are native (which, for purposes of this fact sheet, means they occur naturally in eastern Massachusetts). Certain non-native species with specific coastal landscaping advantages that are not known to be invasive have also been listed. These plants are labeled “not native,” and their state or country of origin is provided. (See definitions for native plant species and non-native plant species at the end of this fact sheet.) Coastal Beach Plant List Plant List for Sheltered Intertidal Areas Sheltered intertidal areas (between the low-tide and high-tide line) of beach, marsh, and even rocky environments are home to particular plant species that can tolerate extreme fluctuations in water, salinity, and temperature. The following plants are appropriate for these conditions along the Massachusetts coast. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. Bloodroot, trout lilies, trillium and many other colorful beauties steal the show. As summer progresses cohosh, jack-in-the-pulpit, and ferns take center stage. It is not until late summer, when most other wildflowers have dropped their petals and are preparing for a long winter under snow and ice, that the wood asters finally get to have their chance. Though there all along, they bide their time until their understated white blooms can take advantage of mature insects for pollination and of cooler temperatures for setting seed. What is it? Hook., glaucous white lettuce, is a perennial member of the Asteraceae or composite family. It is considered globally secure (G5), but in New England, it is known only from northern Maine, primarily along the St. John River. There are also several occurrences along the Aroostook River. Ice scour and flooding are common annual disturbances on these rivers. Many of the N. racemosus populations were discovered during survey efforts for Pedicularis furbishiae (Furbish’s lousewort), and both species, as well as many other rarities, may be found at some sites. In other parts of the country, N. racemosus grows in prairie communities. There are currently 31 extant occurrences in Maine, 28 of these along the St. John River, and three on the Aroostook River. There are four historic occurrences, all on the Aroostook River, and one extirpated population on the Aroostook River. Nabalus racemosus is a species of Special Concern in Maine, where it is ranked S3. Other nearby areas from which it is recorded include New Brunswick (S3), Nova Scotia (S1), Newfoundland Island (S1S2), Labrador (SR), Quebec (SR), Vermont (SR), New Jersey (SH), New York (SX), and Pennsylvania (SX). Little is known regarding the biology of Nabalus racemosus. -
