In the second half of the 1970s, Brian Eno, Larry Fast, Mickey Hart, Stomu Yamashta and many other musicians blurred the lines between rock and avantgarde. Brian Eno (34), ex-keyboardist for Roxy Music, changed the course of rock music at least three times. The experiment of fusing pop and electronics on Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy (sep 1974 - nov 1974) changed the very notion of what a "pop song" is. Eno took cheap melodies (the kind that are used at the music-hall, on television commercials, by nursery rhymes) and added a strong rhythmic base and counterpoint of synthesizer. The result was similar to the novelty numbers and the "bubblegum" music of the early 1960s, but it had the charisma of sheer post-modernist genius. Eno had invented meta-pop music: avantgarde music that employs elements of pop music. He continued the experiment on Another Green World (aug 1975 - sep 1975), but then changed its perspective on Before And After Science (? 1977 - dec 1977). Here Eno's catchy ditties acquired a sinister quality. -

Abandoned Luncheonette 8-14-09 Musical Scenes from Tom Laporte Inspired by Daryl Hall & John Oates
Abandoned Luncheonette 8-14-09 Musical Scenes from Tom LaPorte inspired by Daryl Hall & John Oates Scene 1 “Spring slipped up on us again,” Amie said, hurrying along uninhibited by the waist high underbrush. “It’s crazy how fast the weeds grow.” “It’s a welcome surprise. My mom kept me cooped up in the house too much during the winter. I love getting out,” Daryl said, just as a tree branch flipped smacked him on the forearm while his friend doggedly marched through the dense overgrowth. “Ouch!” “Sorry,” she said with a giggle, but didn’t stop moving forward. Daryl broke off the branch in a puerile act of revenge. “This would make a great hickory switch for my dad.” “Did he get his own or send you out for one?” she asked. “Dad picked his own, and they were dandies, like this one,” Daryl said, while whipping the branch though he air. Destination in sight, Amie ditched the conversation and charged onward. She grabbed at the aluminum door handle of the luncheonette and gave a tug, to no avail. “This really needs to be fixed. How do they expect customers to enter?” “Let me give it a try,” Daryl said. “I’ve got it,” she said, as she clenched her teeth and pulled it open. She needled her way through the door first, unfettered by the many dust-covered cobwebs. Amid the detritus, mold and mildew, Amie and Daryl beamed with delight. Their pleasure belied the location. “Ah, our table is available.” “Perfect,” Amie cooed. “After you,” the gentlemanly Daryl stepped aside and stood until Amie took a seat in the abandoned luncheonette. -
ASCAP/BMI Comment
November 20, 2015 Chief, litigation Ill Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 s'h Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the litigation Ill Section: My name is John Oates and I am a songwriter living in Nashville and Colorado. My partner Daryl Hall ( Hall&Oates) and I have been an affiliate of BMI for over 40 years and I truly value the service and support BMI has provided me throughout my career. I write today in response to the Justice Department's request for public comments on the issue of whether BMI and ASCAP's consent decrees mandate music licensing on a 100% basis, rather than the long-established industry practice of fractionally licensing jointly-owned songs. It's vital that my voice is heard, because if 100% licensing were required it would severely impact my creative freedom, my ability to choose which PRO licenses my music, and ultimately, my livelihood as a songwriter. Beyond my career, these ramifications would profoundly affect songwriters across our nation. My profession is writing songs, making me part of America's smallest small business. Throughout my career of over 20 top 40 singles and 10 number one records, ( Maneater, You Make My Dreams Come True, She's Gone, Sara Smile, I Can't Go For That, Out Of Touch, Rich Girl) BMI my carefully chosen PRO, was with me from the start, looking out for my rights and providing a stable source of income. I am loyal to BMI because of the trusted relationships I have there, and, essentially, I like the way they value my music and fight for all writers to get fees that reflect the fair value of our creative work. -
Peter Gabriel by W Ill Hermes
Peter Gabriel By W ill Hermes The multifaceted performer has spent nearly forty years as a solo artist and music innovator. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY PETER GABRIELS: THE PROG rocker who steered the cosmos-minded genre toward Earth; the sem i- new waver more focused on empathic storytelling and musical inno vation than fashion or attitude; the Top Forty hitmaker ambivalent about the spotlight; the global activist whose Real World label and collaborations introduced pivotal non-Western acts to new audiences; the elder statesman inspiring a new generation of singer-songwrit ers. ^ So his second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a solo act this time - his first, in 2010, was as cofounder of the prog-pop juggernaut Genesis - seems wholly earned. Yet it surprised him, especially since he was a no-show that first time: The ceremony took place two days before the notorious perfectionist began a major tour. “I would’ve gone last time if I had not been about to perform,” Gabriel (b. February 13,1950) explained. “I just thought, 1 can’t go. We’d given ourselves very little rehearsal time.’” ^ “It’s a huge honor,” he said of his inclusions, noting that among numerous Grammys and other awards, this one is distinguished ‘because it’s more for your body of work than a specific project.” ^ That body of work began with Genesis, named after the young British band declined the moniker of “Gabriel’s Angels.” They produced their first single (“The Silent Sun”) in the winter of 1968, when Gabriel was 17. -
Private Eyes, a Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates
Private Eyes, a Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates, was formed in 2018. Their mission was clear and precise: to deliver the timeless music from the best-selling duo of all time. This Los Angeles-based band is the only Hall & Oates tribute to feature note for note renditions of all the greatest hits as well as some choice fan favorites. Founder, Music Director, and Bassist Chris Willshire undertook a nationwide search for the right vocalist who could replicate the blue-eyed soul of Daryl Hall, only to find frontman Mark Wilson in his own San Fernando Valley backyard. Mark is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and his diverse background includes having toured with Frankie Valli as one of the Four Seasons, serving as an opening act with the Marcels for Tina Turner, and contributing background vocals for John Denver & Garth Brooks. He has also been a member of the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Jazz Choir. A TV editor by day, Bassist Chris Willshire’s credits include promo material for such CW shows as Supernatural, The Flash, Arrow, and Black Lightning, in addition to episodes of Bravo’s Top Chef. He met future Oates, Nate Beausoleil while working on the HGTV shows Flip or Flop and House Hunters. Nate is an in-demand Field Audio Engineer for House Hunters, as well as for indie films and documentaries. Drummer Mat Miranda has performed at multiple Disney properties as well as on international cruise ship tours. He is also an acclaimed drum line instructor and a Top 3 finalist at the Indoor Drumline World Competition. -
