An Autoethnography of the Problem of Ethnic Suffering and Moral Evil in Black Judaism Andre Eugene Key Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Nathaniel Norment, Jr. Ph.D. This study examines the problem of ethnic suffering and moral evil in Black Judaism. Black Judaism has been traditionally studied along anthropological and sociological lines, as a result, the core beliefs and theological issues which animate the faith tradition have not been the subject of critical study. This dissertation uses an African-American centered theoretical perspective and a black theology methodological approach to produce an autoethnography of my experiences living as a member of the Hebrew Israelite community. This study suggests that Black Judaism is best understood through an examination of the problem of black theodicy meaning the belief in an omnipotent and benevolent deity while acknowledging the historical oppression of African Americans. Black Judaism articulates a belief in black theodicy which asserts that African Americans are victims of divine punishment and must “repent” in order to experience liberation from ethnic suffering and moral evil in the form of anti-Black racism and white supremacy. This belief in deserved punishment has led Black Judaism into a state of mis-religion. By engaging in the process of gnosiological conversion I will identify the oppressive features of Black Judaism and offer corrective measures. iii Finally, this dissertation will discuss ways in which Black Judaism can conceive of liberation without the need for appeals to redemptive suffering. Concomitantly I will discuss the articulation of a Hebrew Israelite ethno-religious identity which is not predicated on the belief of redemptive suffering. Instead, I propose the basis for a restructuring of the core beliefs of Black Judaism based on humanocentric theism. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost I would like to thank my parents, Benny and Andrea Key. PROVIDENCE AND HISTORIES: AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PERSPECTIVE OF BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY Introduction Black theology as a particular perspective and method in the field of theology is a relatively new phenomenon which has roots in the religious history of the slave ancestors of today's African-Americans.1 Black theology, like most theology, is essentially an attempt to understand the meaning and purpose of human life in the context of a community which believes in God. Black theologies, though diverse, all seek to understand the meaning and pur- pose of Black humanity in the context of a society which is inimical and oppres- sive to its existence. Recent news report would suggests that assertions that African- Americans are the victims of systemic genocide may not be too radical. The infant mortality rate of African-American babies in major United States cities is equal to that of some third world countries; the life expectancy of Blacks decreased in the last six months; suicide rates have increased; the major threat to life for Black males between the ages of 22 and 45 is murder; Black males and females experience a higher rate of incarceration in prisons; deaths by aids and drugs is steadily increas- ing; etc. The development "life statistics" have complex histories but the envi- ronmental stresses of high unemployment, homelessness, miseducation, poor medical care, general poverty, and racism are contributing factors. These condi- tions have a systemic origin and require systemic solutions. John W. Fleming suggests that in its initial stages of development, Black the- ology was united in its goal but diverse in its response in addressing the reality of the "color-caste system" and oppression which characterize the social reality of African-Americans.

There is no primary leader today. First started in the United States before the Civil War. Headquarters: Various major cities across the United States with state chapters. There does not appear to be a central headquarter of leadership for the movement. Membership: Approximately 200,000 among the dozens of offshoot branches. Approximately 50,000 Black Hebrews, while the number who follow some form of Judaism (broadly defined) could be up to 200,000. There is a vast amount of diversity amongst various groups who claim to be descendants of the ancient Israelites. It is difficult to distinguish between all the various offshoots and movements within the broad movement of "Black Jewish Identity." Therefore, the range of possible adherents could be between 40,000-200,000. Origins: One sect originated before the Civil War. There was another sect founded later in 1896, the Church of God and Saints of Christ, by William Crowdy. In the 1980s other sects began to appear, such as those lead by Yahweh Ben Yahweh (1935 - 2007), or Hulon Mitchell, Jr. There are a number of other sects of this broad Hebrew Israelite movement known as the Commandment Keepers, The Law Keepers, House of Judah, and the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, just to name a few.1 Practices: 1. Some groups stand on the street corners of major cities and condemn people for their allegedly false beliefs while using vulgar language.2 The Hebrew Israelites are very combative and generally do not want to listen when their views are challenged.3 2.

The Complex Relationship between Jews and African Americans in the Context of the Civil Rights Movement Abstract The Civil Rights Movement occurred throughout a substantial portion of the twentieth century, dedicated to fighting for equal rights for African Americans through various forms of activism. The movement had a profound impact on a number of different communities in the United States and around the world as demonstrated by the continued international attention marked by recent iterations of the Black Lives Matter and ‘Never Again’ movements. One community that had a complex reaction to the movement, played a major role within it, and was impacted by it was the American Jewish community. The African American community and the Jewish community were bonded by a similar exclusion from mainstream American society and a historic empathetic connection that would carry on into the mid-20th century; however, beginning in the late 1960s, the partnership between the groups eventually faced challenges and began to dissolve, only to resurface again in the twenty-first century.
