That’s why I pulled myself back from dedicating an album to The Doors, my absolute favorite band, for such a long time. Then my love to Jim Morrison and his mates dominated. OverDOORS, despite facing some troubles at the beginning, has been growing strongly. The first doubt was wich songs to choose: I wish I could revisit them all. Under my fingers I had another doubt, due to the different possibilities of how to reinterpret the historical Californian band. For one month, only one question was on my mind: should I choose a cover approach or a free musical revision? I actually took both, wearing Converse, feeling free to analyse and fit back [Light My Fire], singing and whispering melodies both ethereal and eternal [like Blue Sunday and Yes, The River Knows]. I am curious to see my friends' reaction to the groove Waiting For The Sun; Carlo, Piero and all others, whom I dreamt with, sitting on a bench, flying on the notes of LA Woman. Strange Days: The American Media Debates The Doors, 1966-1971 Maximillian F. Grascher 2 Introduction Throughout the course of American history, there have been several prominent social and political revolutions carried out by citizens dissatisfied with the existing American institutions run by the government and its civil servants. Of these revolutions, Vietnam War and civil rights protest among youth in the 1960s was of the most influential, shaping American society in the decades to come. With US involvement in Vietnam escalating and the call for African-American civil rights becoming more insistent by the year, thousands of America’s youth took to the streets to protest the country’s foreign and domestic policies and to challenge the US government, much to the anger of America’s older generations. Artists played a critical role in the unrest, including musicians who encouraged a reformation of American society’s established norms through revolution.

I’m The Doors Experience Alter Schlachthof Wels 21 February 2015 using too many exclamation marks but they are necessary, believe me! Oops, there goes another one. Old loves die hard: I have been a fan of The Doors since I was 16 years old. You do the maths how long ago, it’s too depressing for me. As well as two other Doors cover bands (one from Vienna, one from Berlin) I saw Ray Manzarek (R.I.P., sadly) solo (on my honeymoon to boot!), Robby Krieger solo in New York (coincidentally, whilst being on holiday) and The Doors 21K/Riders on the Storm/Manzarek-Krieger [they had to change the name of the band repeatetly because of John Densmore’s veto; he went to court about this and eventually wrote a book about the legal struggles between him and Ray +Robby entitled The Doors Unhinged] three times feat.

  • 8.103 Crenshaw
Five to One: Rethinking the Doors and the Sixties Counterculture 1 CHRISTOPHER CRENSHAW “Five to One” is an evocative phrase. For listeners aware of the Doors song by the same title, it can bring to mind images of sex, fear, death, freedom, revolution, or simply drugs and alcohol. It can be a good-time anthem or a sobering indictment of the sixties. For listeners in the sixties, this double meaning was likely intentional. The song’s lyrics are loaded with double- or triple-meanings. In the 1968 recording from the LP Waiting for the Sun, lead singer Jim Morrison’s vocals are at times audibly slurred; but the song starts off strong. “Love my girl, she lookin’ good,” Morrison almost whispers into the microphone, establishing a sexual tone from the beginning before letting his listeners know that “no one here gets out alive.” Joan Didion remarked on this sex/death duality in an essay in The White Album (1979). The Doors, she claimed, were “missionaries of apocalyptic sex.” They “seemed unconvinced that love was brotherhood and the Kama Sutra” and “insisted that love was sex and sex was death and therein lay salvation.”2 Other double meanings in the song are equally illustrative. In the next stanza Morrison sings, “they got the guns, but we got the numbers.” At face value, the lyric can be interpreted as an overt political message. The police may have “the guns,” but the people “got the numbers.” Organist Ray Manzarek, however, revealed another meaning of the song in a 1968 interview in Life magazine.

• Behind the Doors: Perceptions of Reality
Behind the Doors: Perceptions of Reality ALBERTO NONES Aesthetic and Ethical Perception of Reality Following a contribution on the Doors that recently appeared on this journal,1 this paper intends to specify which elements of newness were introduced by the band as well as the roots from which they originated. A secondary aim is to throw some more light on the way the Doors differentiated themselves from the hippie and counterculture movements, although they of course shared many of their motives, the foremost of which was a general sense of rupture. Listening to a song like “Break on Through (to the Other Side)” (track 1 of The Doors, Elektra, January 1967) truly gives the sense of a break to the other side, a passage, a change of physical and metaphysical status. The song opened the Doors’ first album and was also their first official single, the medium through which the band began the climb to success. In 1967 calls to break to the other side, which may sound harmless if decontextualized today, were growing. They represented an invitation to make one’s way into a dizzying freedom, where life energy was seemingly boundless and aimed at something transcendent. The invitation was to go beyond, and this paper tries to explain in what sense. It was not the Doors, of course, who invented the concept of going beyond the limits, nor, for that matter, the hippies or the exponents of counterculture. In certain contexts, such as the sixties, this timeless temptation has surfaced in a particularly acute form, as if it were a collective contagion, and its transposition in music can be disruptive.

  • Experience the Ultimate Doors Tribute Show
Is Everybody In? Experience the Ultimate Doors Tribute Show... The Doors have captured the imagination of every generation since their songs flew to the top of the charts in 1967 and the world was first introduced to their unique sound and charismatic front man, Jim Morrison. Hit songs such as “Light My Fire”, “Break On Through”, and “Riders on The Storm” remain in heavy rotation on the radio today. Their hit songs, however, provide only a glimpse of who The Doors were. A live Doors show combined elements of rock, blues, jazz, psychedelia, poetry, shamanism, and live theatre, treating audiences to a glimpse of ‘The Other Side’. The American Night, from Seattle Washington, recreates the energy, myth and experience of a live Doors concert. At an American Night show, the audience steps back in time to an evening of music, poetic drama, and the unexpected. The show unfolds before the eyes of the audience who imagine they are witnessing a legendary Doors performance. The night feels surreal. “When will this dream stop?” the audience asks. Unlike some Doors tribute shows, which focus entirely on the part of Jim Morrison, The American Night is a complete Doors tribute experience. Audiences are captivated by The American Night’s attention to detail and realism, using original vintage instruments to tap into the vibe of a live Doors concert. The musicians of the Night share a special bond with the music as lifelong Doors fans. The American Night is available to entertain at your club, venue, or special event.
