Join him for a wild world adventure and be entertained by his legendary skill with words and storytelling. Juniper Foodwise Bev Juniper is a local Freelance Home Economist and Community Food worker who is back in our libraries by popular demand delivering themed family friendly healthy cookery workshops where you can eat what you make! It’s fresh, it’s fun and it’s tasty! What a treat! Topsy Turvy Theatre Written especially for children aged 2-7 (and their big people too) and told with Topsy Turvy Theatre’s own blend of energetic storytelling, handmade puppets, original music and stunning scenery, Christopher’s Caterpillars is an uplifting live event puppet show about a pair of adventurous and curious guinea pigs. 4 What’s On Fettle and Fable Theatre Discover a magical world within an old suitcase. Toller’s Neighbours is a special ‘puppet theatre in a suitcase’ performance told by award winning Fettle and Fable Theatre company and inspired by a traditional Scandinavian folk-tale. All the wonderful bird sculptures will flock together to make a special display at the end of the summer. Introduction A wide variety of social, economic and cultural conditions exist across the Wakefield district, and these combine to create a patchwork of distinctive communities and neighbourhoods. These differences may prompt agencies to deliver services in particular ways and the priorities for local people in one area may be different to those of people living in another area. The Wakefield Together area working model has been developed to reflect and address the differences that exist across the district. The remains of the keep can be seen above the castle mound.] History After the Norman Conquest the manor of Pontefract was given to Ilbert do Lacy as part of a vast landholding which became known as the honour of Pontefract. It was owned by the de Lacy family until 1311 when it passed to Thomas of Lancaster. The castle was confiscated by the king after the rebellion and subsequent execution of Thomas in 1314. It was returned to Henry of Lancaster (Thomas’ brother) in 1327, but again became a royal possession when Henry Bolingbroke, heir to the Lancaster estates, was crowned king after his usurpation of Richard II in 1399. The castle has remained a Crown possession ever since. Given the importance of the castle and its owners it is not surprising that it has witnessed some of the major events of northern history. Thomas of Lancaster was beheaded on a small hill outside the castle walls. Richard II died a prisoner in the castle in what can only be described as suspicious circumstances. In 1536 the castle was temporarily taken over by the Pilgrimage of Grace, a northern rebellion against the rule of Henry VIII. The castle was besieged three times 1 during the English Civil War and was the last stronghold in England to hold out for the King. The castle was demolished in 1649.

Many of you will be aware that in St Joseph’s church we have a substantial war memorial to those who died in the First and Second World Wars. As we approach the 100 year remembrance of WWI, we’re reminded of the grim price that was paid by men from our own streets. This booklet tells us a little more about the men listed on the memorial. Some of these men may have family still alive in the parish; many will not. It is our collective responsibility as Catholics not only to remember but also to pray for their immortal souls. We must forget neither them nor the unfailing mercy of Almighty God.
