  • Short Term and Long Term Motives for the Internationalization of Marathon Events
Pamukkale Journal of Sport Sciences 2020 Vol. 11 No. 3, 01-19 ISSN: 1309-0356 accepted: 19.09.2020 Short term and long term motives for the internationalization of marathon events Zsolt Havran 1, Miklós Kozma 1, Tünde Máté 1, Ágnes Szabó 1, Krisztina András 1, Attila Kajos 1, Zoltán Kynsburg 1, Zygmunt Waskowski 2 1 Corvinus University of Budapest, 1093 Budapest, Fővám tér 8 2Poznan University of Economics and Business Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract The current study aims to answer the question of how the motives for internationalization of leisure sports companies can be understood through the example of international running events. We present the phenomenon of globalisation and internationalisation as a context of leisure sports, linking the conceptual frameworks of leisure sports and international business (IB). The paper highlights the characteristics of leisure sports companies in the process of internationalization. More specifically, we examined the global business trends of marathons, with particular attention of event organizers in the Central-Eastern European (CEE) region in our preparatory study. Data about experiences, entry fee, international communication and sponsorship were collected from the eight most significant CEE marathons and two semi-structured interviews were done with event organizers. Our main findings reveal that market seeking and strategic asset seeking motives are dominant in the case of CEE marathon organizers with a notable distinction between short term and long term perspectives. Keywords: internationalization, marathon, Central-Eastern Europe, leisure sports services, motives for internationalisation Pamukkale Journal of Sport Sciences Vol. XX, No. X; 2020 1 1.INTRODUCTION Sports, and in particular leisure sports, play an increasingly important role in society and at the same time, its economic impact is becoming more significant.

  • 42Nd PZU ORLEN WARSAW MARATHON 26-27Th September 2020 Marek Tronina Director of the 42Nd PZU ORLEN Warsaw Marathon
STANDARD RACE 42 KM 42nd PZU ORLEN WARSAW MARATHON 26-27th september 2020 Marek Tronina Director of the 42nd PZU ORLEN Warsaw Marathon It was supposed to be 42 by 42. 42 heroes, 42 unique events, 42 wonderful volunteers – etc. But what we ended up with was the strangest marathon in the history of marathons. Have you ever run a marathon on a 5km loop? Some of you might have. And have you ever taken part in a marathon with four diffe- rent heats? Probably not, although maybe some of you have, somewhere. What about a race where the organisers discourage people from supporting? You’d probably need to search pretty hard for that. Maybe you’ve been in a race whe- re you’ve had to have your temperature taken before the start? And if so – has anyone ever been in a race with all of these elements together, along with a few more strange ones? Not a chance. Welcome to the 42nd PZU ORLEN Warsaw Marathon! It’s been a long time since we’ve been this happy to be able to organise a race. Any race. We are delighted to see every single one the thousand runners on the start list – even more so, I think, than the 7½ thousand at our 40th anniver- sary event two years ago. We’re also delighted to see the thousands of you who haven’t made it to Warsaw but are running at home. That’s right, the world has been turned upside down. Who knows how much longer it will last.
