MARY ’ S SEMINARY&UNIVERSITY Annual Report 2017 1 A N EW ERA IN SEMINARY FORMATION The Congregation for Clergy, the department of the Holy See that oversees seminary formation, recently issued a new Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis containing the Vatican’s guidelines for seminary programs. This represents the initiation of a new era in seminary formation that takes into consideration the evolution of seminary programs and social and Rev. Phillip J. Brown, P.S.S. cultural changes that have occurred since the last Ratio in 1970 following the Second Vatican President Rector Council, and Pope St. John Paul II’s Pastores Dabo Vobis in 1992, both of which gave norms and guidance for seminary programs. Because these are so essential for the work we do, I wanted to let you know a little about this important new document and how it will affect St. Mary’s. Pastores dabo vobis has been the most important document for seminary formators and administrators since 1992. Pastores dabo vobis is the first official document that spoke of the “four pillars” of formation: Human; spiritual; intellectual; and pastoral. This year's Annual Report illuminates the ways our program integrates the four pillars. While Pastores dabo vobis alludes to the process of formation, its main emphasis is on the content of formation programs; hence the “four pillars” referred to on the pages that follow. The new Ratio , on the other hand, shifts emphasis to the process of formation, speaking of four “stages” of formation while not abandoning the content of the “four pillars” upon which sound formation must be anchored.

O’Brien as well as Monsignor Adam J. Parker. The former pastor of Church of the Ascension in Halethorpe has served as the cardinal’s priest-secretary from the moment Cardinal O’Brien arrived in Baltimore more than four years ago – driving the cardinal, maintaining his schedule, providing background information, managing events and offering daily support. It was a role Monsignor Parker never anticipated, yet one that has enriched his priesthood as he’s witnessed what he regards as a model of priestly devotion from a leader he calls a “tremendous mentor.” Monsignor Adam Parker is shown with then-Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien at St. Ann in Hagerstown in 2009. (CR File) “He’s a very deeply spiritual man,” Monsignor Parker said of Cardinal O’Brien. “He has a very profound relationship with Jesus Christ and he’s very much devoted to the celebration of the Eucharist and eucharistic adoration. When I go to the chapel in the morning, he’s already there praying and when I leave the chapel at the end of the day, he’s still there.” Because Cardinal O’Brien was unfamiliar with the priests of the archdiocese, he asked his predecessor, Cardinal William H.     BUILDING ON SUCCESS CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2014 July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014 1 Dear Friends, It is my privilege to present you with the Catholic Community Foundation’s Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2014. I am pleased to report that the Catholic Community Foundation has continued to build upon OVERVIEW earlier successes, increasing its assets held under management to nearly $47 million and adding seven Welcome from Foundation President 1 new funds to the Foundation’s portfolio. The Foundation’s robust growth stems in great part from two factors: the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Vision, Mission, Legacy 2 continued successful implementation of the Embracing Our Mission ~ Shaping Our Future capital campaign, and the quality and due diligence of the Foundation’s investment manager, Commonfund. The capital campaign continues to substantially FINANCIALS increase the Foundation’s assets, and Commonfund’s management helps Building on Success 3 ensure that our donors’ investments are realizing maximum returns. The Catholic Community Foundation’s continued success is a blessing for our Investment Review 4 entire Archdiocese. The Foundation’s approach – reaching out to all Archdiocesan Performance Review 5 parishes, schools, and ministries – is holistic. It is incredibly rewarding to know that the Foundation is looking out for all members of our community: offering scholarships to Audited Financials 6 students in need; helping parishes to keep their food pantries stocked; or providing long-term medical care for our Clergy. Personally, I find great joy in being part of the Catholic Community Foundation because it helps me to fulfill what I see as the true meaning of being a Catholic – helping others.
