E-mail: [email protected] Received 30 November 2010; Revised 1 February 2011; Accepted 2 February 2011 Abstract Using isotopic screens, phylogenetic assessments, and 45 years of physiological data, it is now possible to identify most of the evolutionary lineages expressing the C4 photosynthetic pathway. Here, 62 recognizable lineages of C4 photosynthesis are listed. Thirty-six lineages (60%) occur in the eudicots. Monocots account for 26 lineages, with a Downloaded from minimum of 18 lineages being present in the grass family and six in the sedge family. Species exhibiting the C3–C4 intermediate type of photosynthesis correspond to 21 lineages. Of these, 9 are not immediately associated with any C4 lineage, indicating that they did not share common C3–C4 ancestors with C4 species and are instead an independent line. The geographic centre of origin for 47 of the lineages could be estimated. These centres tend to jxb.oxfordjournals.org cluster in areas corresponding to what are now arid to semi-arid regions of southwestern North America, south- central South America, central Asia, northeastern and southern Africa, and inland Australia. -

Bridges Botanical and Ecological Consultant, 7752 Holly Tree Place NW, Bremerton, WA 98312-1063 [email protected] ABSTRACT Floristic composition of the Florida dry prairie landscape was compiled from 291 sites in nine south-central peninsular counties. Floristic lists were based upon field inventory and compilation from reliable sources to- taling 11,250 site and community type-specific observations and were analyzed by region (Kissimmee River, Desoto/Glades “Big Prairie,” and Myakka). The known vascular flora consists of 658 vascular plant taxa, rep- resenting 317 genera and 115 families. Families with the highest number of species are Poaceae (103), Asteraceae (78), Cyperaceae (76), Fabaceae (23), Scrophulariaceae (20), and Orchidaceae (18). The most diverse genera are Rhynchospora (29), Dichanthelium (17), Ludwigia (13), Xyris (12), and Andropogon (11). Of this flora 24 taxa are endemic to central or southern peninsular Florida, primarily within the pine savanna- flatwood/dry prairie landscape, and 41 taxa are of Floridian biotic affinity. Although most species are not re- gionally specific, a few (Carphephorus carnosus, Ctenium aromaticum, and Liatris spicata) appear to be ab- sent from the Myakka prairie region, while Marshallia tenuifolia appears to be absent from both the Desoto/ Glades and Myakka prairie regions. Within the dry prairie landscape Hypericum edisonianum is restricted to the Desoto/Glades region. A few other species somewhat differentiate between prairie regions; however, most occur in other habitats in the counties where they are absent or nearly absent from dry prairie. -

INTRODUCTION The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of Natural Heritage (DCR-DNH) was established to protect Virginia's Natural Heritage Resources. These Resources are defined in the Virginia Natural Area Preserves Act of 1989 (Section 10.1-209 through 217, Code of Virginia), as the habitat of rare, threatened, and endangered plant and animal species; exemplary natural communities, habitats, and ecosystems; and other natural features of the Commonwealth. DCR-DNH is the state's only comprehensive program for conservation of our natural heritage and includes an intensive statewide biological inventory, field surveys, electronic and manual database management, environmental review capabilities, and natural area protection and stewardship. Through such a comprehensive operation, the Division identifies Natural Heritage Resources which are in need of conservation attention while creating an efficient means of evaluating the impacts of economic growth. To achieve this protection, DCR-DNH maintains lists of the most significant elements of our natural diversity. -

Bradley, Botanist, 1000 Natchez Trail, West Columbia, South Carolina, 29169 ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: The floristic diversity is generally unknown in national wildlife refuges in the Southeastern Coastal Plain. Eleven refuges in South Carolina and Georgia in the Savannah and South Carolina Lowcountry refuge complexes were surveyed in an effort to catalogue all plant species in each refuge. All rare plant species encountered were mapped, and for each population its size, habitat characters, and threats determined. Floristic diversity ranges widely across the refuges, from a low of 75 at Wolf Island, to a high of 1100 at Savannah NWR. Five At-risk plant species were recorded; these were found on three refuges, Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin, Savannah, and Waccamaw. Populations of state-tracked rare plant species were found at all eleven refuges. Br., está conformado por hierbas de tallo fotosintético, hojas simples reducidas a solo la vaina, e inflorescencia tipo espiguilla terminal. El género pertenece a la familia Cyperaceae (430 ssp), la tercera en importancia para el país, por el número de especies dentro de las monocotiledóneas, precedida por Orchidacedae (1632 ssp) y Poaceae (755 ssp). Los Eleocharis cuentan con 258 especies en el mundo y 40 para Venezuela, siendo de amplia distribución geográfica dentro del territorio nacional. Este género está circunscrito dentro de la Tribu Scirpeae y a partir de 2010 se incluyó en la Tribu Eleocharideae, denotando que sus características taxonómicas conforman su principal dificultad al momento de identificar a las especies, pues debe estar en etapa reproductiva para completar los caracteres morfológicos distintivos. El objetivo de la presente investigación es establecer relaciones sistemáticas, aclarar la circunscripción infragenérica, facilitar herramientas para definir taxonómicamente a las especies del género Eleocharis en Venezuela, aportar información fitogeográfica, morfológica, anatómica y sistemática de sus taxa. -

Four different types of Kranz anatomy (chlorocyperoid, eleocharoid, fimbristyloid and rhynchosporoid) have been described for this angiosperm family, and the occurrence and structural characteristics of these types are important to trace evolutionary hypotheses. The purpose of this study was to examine the available data on Cyperaceae Kranz anatomy, emphasizing taxonomy, geographic distribution, habitat and anatomy, to infer the potential origin of the Kranz anatomy in this family. The results showed that the four types of Kranz anatomy (associated with C4 photosynthesis) in Cyperaceae emerged numerous times in unrelated phylogenetic groups. However, the convergence of these anatomical types, except rhynchosporoid, was observed in certain groups. -

All 107 genera were included in the current sample, with 91 genera assessed as consistently C3 and 11 genera as C4. The genera Abildgaardia, Cyperus, Eleocharis, Fimbristylis, and Rhynchospora are variable for this trait. Of the total number (1474) of specific (1406) and infraspecific (68) taxa sampled, 938 taxa (63%) are C3, 527 taxa (36%) are C4, and nine species of Eleocharis are debatably intermediate or variable in pathway. -
