We are dedicated to serving others through charitable events and activities that reflect positively on the Fallbrook community. A Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America About This Month’s Cover Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner The Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner (Retractable) is a mid 20th century convertible car with a retractable hardtop, produced by Ford Motor Company in the United States for the model years 1957 to 1959. In 1959 the model name changed to Ford Galaxie Skyliner very shortly after production of the 1959 models had started. The retractable roof mechanism – also known as “Hide-Away Hardtop” – was unique to Ford branded products, and was not offered on Continental, Lincoln, Mercury, or Edsel branded vehicles during this time period. The Ford Skyliner Retractable was a two-door full-size car, that was only the second car in history to be series produced with a retractable hardtop; the first to reach four and five digit mass-production numbers, and the first series produced coupé convertible to feature a roof composed of more than one segment. Additionally, the trunk-lid also consisted of two pieces — one segment took the place where other convertibles typically had a separate lid to cover the soft-top stowage compartment. Both the folding roof and trunk-lid are power operated through an exceptionally complex system. Part of the Ford Fairlane 500 range, the Skyliner had a complex mechanism which folded the front of the roof and retracted it under the rear decklid. No hydraulic mechanisms were used as in regular convertibles of the era. The Skyliner top has seven reversible electric motors (only six for 1959 models), four lift jacks, a series of relays, ten limit switches, ten solenoids, four locking mechanisms for the roof and two locking mechanisms for the trunk lid, and a total of 610 ft of wiring. The large top took up vast amounts of trunk space, limiting the car’s sales. However, unlike what most people believe, the mechanism had decent reliability. Production totaled 20,766 units in 1957, declining to 14,713 in 1958 and to 12,915 in 1959. An electric clock was standard. Fuel consumption was around 14 mpg‑US overall. The fuel tank was placed vertically in back of the rear seat, which inadvertently added safety in rear collisions. Res. 108) was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize July 12, 2019, as Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD). H. Res. 108 is sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motor- sports Caucus House Co-Chairs Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL) and Rep. Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (D-GA). The date marks the 10th commemoration in what has become an annual event to celebrate and raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. Intended to celebrate the classics of the past and the future, the U.S. Congress has helped launch CCAD by introducing resolutions each year at SEMA’s request. The previous resolutions were sponsored by co-chairs of the SEMA-supported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus. These Congressional leaders have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, D.C., and recognize the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for the automobile’s unique historical place in our history. A list of officially scheduled events to commemorate America’s time-tested love affair with the automobile is posted on the SEMA site. States, local governments and Canadian provinces have adopted similar commemorative declarations, making it an international recognition of the collector-car hobby and the millions of individuals who support it. Several jurisdictions are pursuing similar initiatives. semasan.com/collector-car-appreciation-day New Members Justin Braunagel 2517 Daisy Ln Fallbrook, CA 92028 e-mail: [email protected] cell: (949) 795-2334 cars: 1939 Buick Series 40 Special / 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Steve & Peggy Brown P.O.
