Helston Christmas Lights Switch on the Festive

Season! This year’s Festive Christmas season began with a bang in Helston on Friday 1st December when the town saw its Christmas lights display switched on. This year saw a large crowd gather on a cold but dry winter’s evening to count down to the big moment that Helston became a blaze of colour. This was followed by a fantastic fireworks display, Christmas carols and Santa’s Grotto. There was even street dancing to entertain the crowd. This year the lights were switched on by the Harvest King and Queen Harry Nicholas and Brooke Balloch. Our thanks go out to Helston Christmas Lights team for all of their hard work to ensure that once again the evening was a tremendous success.

Town . Clerk – Chris Dawson was presented with the certificate at an awards dinner held in Milton Keynes in November 2017. The judging panel said: “Our observations were that Helston was consistently strong across all categories - effective relationships with other parts of the public sector, excellent service delivery, communicating with its community, and training & developing its Member and Officer team.” The panel went on to say: “We liked the dedication they showed in engaging with the community. To have a committee member actually visit each planning site is to be commended. Furthermore, the way that, as a relatively small council, they have taken on the public conveniences and play areas from is quite significant.” The Mayor, Cllr Mrs Gillian Geer congratulated everyone at the November Town Clerk, Chris Dawson (left) receives Star Councils Full Council meeting. It was very moving to see the organisations in the parade, especially the youth groups and schools. Many people worked hard behind the scenes to make it all go so well, including the Royal British Legion Helston Branch, St Michael's Church, Jenny Harvey who runs our local Poppy appeal and Steve Hole and his team of stewards who manned the road closures in windy showery conditions.
