LE TROUVÈRE / . Recorded in New York

Composer Giuseppe Verdi Producion Sir David Mac Vicar ConductorMarco Amiliato

Cast (Leonora), Dolora Zajick (Azucena), Yonghoon Lee (Manrico), Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Comte de Luna)

This production, staged inspired by David McVicar and directed by Marco Armiliato, gathered an extraordinary cast. Anna Netrebko is Leonora, the young noblewoman at the center of the story, in love with the troubadour embodied by the Yonghoon Lee, but also pursued by the Count di Luna, sung by the great and regretful Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Dolora Zajick completes the quartet in the role of Azucena, the mysterious gypsy woman who sets dramatic events in motion. For this Trouvère broadcast from the Metropolitan

Opera in New York, the big show is guaranteed. In revolving sets, David Mc Vicar stages a more or less contained violence for a still tortuous plot transposed here in the 18th century. It's an all-stars cast as the host, Susan Graham, puts it. And it's true: Anna Netrebko's Leonora, literally lashes out in the last act - the most successful of all. Dmitri Hvorostosky, visibly well recovered - which earned him a standing ovation and a shower of flowers - plays a violent and tense count to

the extreme. Veteran Dolora Zajic's Azucena is more cavernous than ever and remains impressive, especially in the last act. Yonghoon Lee more or less skilfully plays Manrico's traps but is not stingy with nuances. Note the excellent house choir, which as often obviously takes great pleasure in playing as much as singing. Marco Armiliato wins everything without weakness. We're almost in Hollywood. Everyone is doing tons of it, the audience is delirious, we kiss each other at the salutes. Opera sometimes is a hell of a (beautiful) cinema.

Saturday

7 November 2020 - 18h LE COMTE ORY. Recorded in New York Composer Gioachino Rossini Production Bartlett Sher Conductor

Cast Juan Diego Florez (Le Comte Ory), (La comtesse Adèle), Joyce DiDonato (Isolier)

The MET in all its splendor: Florez, Damrau, DiDonato and Pertusi united on the same stage, there is no need to say, it throws! The king of the evening is undoubtedly Juan Diego Florez. One would believe the role of the Count written for Juan Diego Florez: a sonorous and well-projected voice, a caressing timbre… As soon as he entered "May the destinies prosper", we can only surrender. Finally the French is perfectly intelligible, and the actor full of wit: libidinous as he would like disguised as a hermit or a nun. Question interpretive imagination he finds the answer in his governor.

The programming in New York of this work so long neglected may seem surprising. Is Count Ory in fashion? We can only rejoice at the success of this opera, which has remained in the shadow of Le Voyage à Reims over the past decades, for which it covers half of the score.

L'Isolier by Joyce DiDonato seems at first glance a little behind: if we find all the Belcantist elegance of the mezzo, it seems to give way to its partners in the sets,

for lack of arrogance in the acute and power deficit. However, the magical trio of the second act ("In favor of this dark night") finds her once again sovereign. Diana Damrau plays a crazy Countess Adele, half nympho half prudish, the nympho side quickly taking over! Sparkling scenically, the German soprano lacks a more nourished medium and a touch of madness in the vocalization to completely satisfy us.

Saturday

12 Deember 2020 - 18h LA CENERENTOLA . Gioachino Rossini Recorded in New York Composer Gioachino Rossini Production Cesare Lievi Conductor Maurizio Benini

Cast Elina Garanca (Angelina), (Don Ramiro), Yonghoon Lee (Manrico), Alessandro Corbelli (Don Magnifico)

Left alone by her sisters-in-law who bullied her,

Cenerentola meets her prince. Much to the annoyance of her in-laws, her beauty, grace and kindness will triumph in the eyes of the world ... Rossini's last bouffe opera, his lyrical adaptation of the tale takes on the allure of a comedy full of gaiety with many deceptions, role reversals and love at first sight. Elina Garanca plays the poor Cinderella on whom her stepfather and her sisters-in-law fight while her prince is played by master Lawrence Brownlee. This production delights. A true technical performance, it is also a true artistic performance, full of beauty and charm which undoubtedly makes it a new benchmark for this Rossini classic. The Met's production is intended to be a family-friendly, cohesive show that does not suffer from any downtime. This opera immortalizes Lawrence Brownlee's Ramiro. The young American tenor signs a great performance, the emotional charge of his singing bursts the screen (which he will share with his Cinderella). Brownlee has a superb face, terribly expressive and a rare thing, he remains in even the most perilous vocal gesture always pleasant to watch. But Brownlee is distinguished above all by humanity and therefore, the constant emotion that emanates from his voice. On paper, her relationship with Elina’s boreal blonde might seem unlikely, and yet it works. We literally fall for these lovers in United Colors of Benetton fashion. It must be said that Elina Garanca ended up picking us up, where we did not necessarily expect her.

LA FLÛTE ENCHANTÉE. Mozart Live from New York

One of opera's most beloved fables returns, with musical director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Patrick Furrer and Cornelius Meister leading the colorful and puppet- filled production of Tony Award-winning Julie Taymor. The main Mozartians cast include soprano Christiane Karg as Pamina, tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Tamino, Thomas Oliemans in his Met debut as Papageno, soprano Kathryn Lewek as Queen of the Night and bass Stephen Milling as Sarastro.

To get his hand, the valiant Tamino will have to free the Princess of Sarastro, of which she is a prisoner. This colorful and lively production by Julie Taymor brings to life one of the repertoire's most beloved fables. The sumptuous score by Charles Gounod will be conducted by the musical director of the house, Yannick Nézet- Séguin, in a realistic and romantic staging by Bartlett Sher.
