Giuseppe Verdi Recorded in New York Composer Giuseppe Verdi Producion Sir David Mac Vicar ConductorMarco Amiliato Cast Anna Netrebko (Leonora), Dolora Zajick (Azucena), Yonghoon Lee (Manrico), Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Comte de Luna) This production, staged inspired by David McVicar and directed by Marco Armiliato, gathered an extraordinary cast. Anna Netrebko is Leonora, the young noblewoman at the center of the story, in love with the troubadour embodied by the tenor Yonghoon Lee, but also pursued by the Count di Luna, sung by the great and regretful Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Dolora Zajick completes the quartet in the role of Azucena, the mysterious gypsy woman who sets dramatic events in motion. For this Trouvère broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the big show is guaranteed. In revolving sets, David Mc Vicar stages a more or less contained violence for a still tortuous plot transposed here in the 18th century. It's an all-stars cast as the host, Susan Graham, puts it. And it's true: Anna Netrebko's Leonora, literally lashes out in the last act - the most successful of all. Dmitri Hvorostosky, visibly well recovered - which earned him a standing ovation and a shower of flowers - plays a violent and tense count to the extreme. Veteran Dolora Zajic's Azucena is more cavernous than ever and remains impressive, especially in the last act. Yonghoon Lee more or less skilfully plays Manrico's traps but is not stingy with nuances. Note the excellent house choir, which as often obviously takes great pleasure in playing as much as singing. Marco Armiliato wins everything without weakness. We're almost in Hollywood. Everyone is doing tons of it, the audience is delirious, we kiss each other at the salutes. Opera sometimes is a hell of a (beautiful) cinema. Saturday 7 November 2020 - 18h LE COMTE ORY. Gioachino Rossini Recorded in New York Composer Gioachino Rossini Production Bartlett Sher Conductor Maurizio Benini Cast Juan Diego Florez (Le Comte Ory), Diana Damrau (La comtesse Adèle), Joyce DiDonato (Isolier) The MET in all its splendor: Florez, Damrau, DiDonato and Pertusi united on the same stage, there is no need to say, it throws! The king of the evening is undoubtedly Juan Diego Florez. One would believe the role of the Count written for Juan Diego Florez: a sonorous and well-projected voice, a caressing timbre… As soon as he entered "May the destinies prosper", we can only surrender. Finally the French is perfectly intelligible, and the actor full of wit: libidinous as he would like disguised as a hermit or a nun. Question interpretive imagination he finds the answer in his governor. The programming in New York of this work so long neglected may seem surprising. Is Count Ory in fashion? We can only rejoice at the success of this opera, which has remained in the shadow of Le Voyage à Reims over the past decades, for which it covers half of the score. L'Isolier by Joyce DiDonato seems at first glance a little behind: if we find all the Belcantist elegance of the mezzo, it seems to give way to its partners in the sets, for lack of arrogance in the acute and power deficit. However, the magical trio of the second act ("In favor of this dark night") finds her once again sovereign. Diana Damrau plays a crazy Countess Adele, half nympho half prudish, the nympho side quickly taking over! Sparkling scenically, the German soprano lacks a more nourished medium and a touch of madness in the vocalization to completely satisfy us. Saturday 12 Deember 2020 - 18h LA CENERENTOLA . Gioachino Rossini Recorded in New York Composer Gioachino Rossini Production Cesare Lievi Conductor Maurizio Benini Cast Elina Garanca (Angelina), Lawrence Brownlee (Don Ramiro), Yonghoon Lee (Manrico), Alessandro Corbelli (Don Magnifico) Left alone by her sisters-in-law who bullied her, Cenerentola meets her prince. Much to the annoyance of her in-laws, her beauty, grace and kindness will triumph in the eyes of the world ... Rossini's last bouffe opera, his lyrical adaptation of the tale takes on the allure of a comedy full of gaiety with many deceptions, role reversals and love at first sight. Elina Garanca plays the poor Cinderella on whom her stepfather and her sisters-in-law fight while her prince is played by bel canto master Lawrence Brownlee. This production delights. A true technical performance, it is also a true artistic performance, full of beauty and charm which undoubtedly makes it a new benchmark for this Rossini classic. The Met's production is intended to be a family-friendly, cohesive show that does not suffer from any downtime. This opera immortalizes Lawrence Brownlee's Ramiro. The young American tenor signs a great performance, the emotional charge of his singing bursts the screen (which he will share with his Cinderella). Brownlee has a superb face, terribly expressive and a rare thing, he remains in even the most perilous vocal gesture always pleasant to watch. But Brownlee is distinguished above all by humanity and therefore, the constant emotion that emanates from his voice. On paper, her relationship with Elina’s boreal blonde might seem unlikely, and yet it works. We literally fall for these lovers in United Colors of Benetton fashion. It must be said that Elina Garanca ended up picking us up, where we did not necessarily expect her. Saturday 7 January 2021 - 18h LA FLÛTE ENCHANTÉE. Mozart Live from New York Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Production Julie Taymor Conductor Gustavo Dudamel Cast Kathrin Lewek (La reine de la nuit), Christiane Karg (Pamina), Stanislas de Barbeyrac (Tamino), Thomas Oliemans (Papageno) One of opera's most beloved fables returns, with musical director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Patrick Furrer and Cornelius Meister leading the colorful and puppet- filled production of Tony Award-winning Julie Taymor. The main Mozartians cast include soprano Christiane Karg as Pamina, tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Tamino, baritone Thomas Oliemans in his Met debut as Papageno, soprano Kathryn Lewek as Queen of the Night and bass Stephen Milling as Sarastro. Tamino is saved in extremis from a snake by the three ladies of honor of the Queen of the Night. When he regains consciousness, they show him the portrait of Pamina, the lovely daughter of the Queen, with whom he immediately falls in love. To get his hand, the valiant Tamino will have to free the Princess of Sarastro, of which she is a prisoner. Equipped with a magic flute and accompanied by Papageno, the Queen's bird catcher, the young man sets out on his journey. This colorful and lively production by Julie Taymor brings to life one of the repertoire's most beloved fables. On stage, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Christiane Karg, Kathryn Lewek and Thomas Oliemans will be led by conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who is conducting for the first time a Met opera broadcast live in cinema. Saturday 30 January 2021 - 18h ROMÉO ET JULIETTE. Charles Gounod Live from New York Composer Charles Gounod Production Bartelett Sher Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin Cast Nadine Sierra (Juliette), Stefen Costello (Roméo), Julie Bourlianne (Stephano), Laurent Naouri (Capulet) Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other at the Capulets' masked ball.

  • Voice Types in Opera
Voice Types in Opera In many of Central City Opera’s educational programs, we spend some time explaining the different voice types – and therefore character types – in opera. Usually in opera, a voice type (soprano, mezzo soprano, tenor, baritone, or bass) has as much to do with the SOUND as with the CHARACTER that the singer portrays. Composers will assign different voice types to characters so that there is a wide variety of vocal colors onstage to give the audience more information about the characters in the story. SOPRANO: “Sopranos get to be the heroine or the princess or the opera star.” – Eureka Street* “Sopranos always get to play the smart, sophisticated, sweet and supreme characters!” – The Great Opera Mix-up* A soprano is a woman’s voice type. There are many different kinds of sopranos within the general category: coloratura, lyric, and spinto are a few. Coloratura soprano: Diana Damrau as The Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute (Mozart): https://youtu.be/dpVV9jShEzU Lyric soprano: Mirella Freni as Mimi in La bohème (Puccini): https://youtu.be/yTagFD_pkNo Spinto soprano: Leontyne Price as Aida in Aida (Verdi): https://youtu.be/IaV6sqFUTQ4?t=1m10s MEZZO SOPRANO: “There are also mezzos with a lower, more exciting woman’s voice…We get to be magical or mythical characters and sometimes… we get to be boys.” – Eureka Street “Mezzos play magnificent, magical, mysterious, and miffed characters.” – The Great Opera Mix-up A mezzo soprano is a woman’s voice type. Just like with sopranos, there are different kinds of mezzo sopranos: coloratura, lyric, and dramatic.

  • Renowned Singers Yonghoon Lee and Karah Son Lead Otelloin Sydney
MEDIA RELEASE 7 June 2021 Verdi | Directed by Harry Kupfer | Conducted by Andrea Battistoni Renowned singers Yonghoon Lee and Karah Son lead Otello in Sydney July 16 - 29, 2021 | Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House Starring | Yonghoon Lee | Karah Son | Marco Vratogna This winter Opera Australia is presenting legendary German director Harry Kupfer’s highly acclaimed production of Otello, one of Verdi’s most magnificent works, with three internationally renowned singers leading a stellar cast. Distilled from Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Otello is an intense chamber-like piece that explores all the problems of the world, concentrated in the lives of the three main characters: Otello, Desdemona and Iago, three of Verdi’s most demanding roles, both vocally and dramatically. Internationally celebrated South Korean tenor Yonghoon Lee will, for the first time in his career, take on the titular role of war hero Otello. In his review of Lee’s 2016 Met performance in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, Dr Neil Kurtzman labelled Lee’s voice “exceptional” and “large” and predicted the role of Otello would be in his future, noting Lee has a “beautiful spinto voice that he uses with great skill and sensitivity; it’s bright and rings”1. Having performed at prestigious opera houses all over the world, Lee debuted with Opera Australia in 2013 in the lead role of Cavaradossi in Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca and has since returned to Australia multiple times, most recently to play Don Jose in Georges Bizet’s Carmen early last year (before it closed prematurely due to COVID 19). The incomparable Karah Son, whose captivating performance made OA’s Madama Butterfly a must-see in 2019, is expected to give a performance that is just as compelling in her long-awaited debut as Desdemona.

Orlando Figes has just written a bestseller about this woman. Using Viardot as an example, he describes the importance of art within the idea of Europe,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. 1 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli Pauline Viardot not only made a name for herself as a singer, composer and pianist, but her happy marriage with the French theatre manager, author and art critic Louis Viardot furthered her career and enabled her to act as a great patron of the arts. Thus, she made unique efforts to save the autograph of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for posterity. Don Giovanni was among the manuscripts Constanze Mozart had sold to Johann Anton André in Offenbach in 1799. After his death in 1842, his daughter inherited the autograph and offered it to libraries in Vienna, Berlin and London – without success. In 1855 her cousin, the pianist Ernst Pauer, took out an advertisement in the London-based journal Musical World. Thereupon, Pauline Viardot-García bought the manuscript for 180 pounds.
