2 Linda L. M. Bennett to Deliver Commencement Address

he speaker for the Graduate Ceremony is USI president, TDr. Linda L. M. Bennett. Bennett became USI’s third president in July 2009, after serving as USI’s provost and vice president for Academic Affairs from 2003 to 2009.

In her first year as president, she led the effort to establish the University’s first strategic plan, raising academic standards and enhancing campus life for students. She is currently leading the University through its second strategic plan to continue until 2020. During her tenure, the USI Foundation led its second successful capital campaign, Campaign USI – Elevating Excellence, concluding in 2016 with gift commitments of more than $57 million. The University continued to experience growth with the addition of over $100 million in building projects. Under her leadership, USI saw growth in academic programs as the University established its first two doctoral programs—Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Education; undergraduate degrees including Manufacturing, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Health Informatics; as well Linda L. M. Bennett as an online Master of Business Administration program.

An active civic leader, Bennett serves on the boards of WNIN Public Broadcasting, Deaconess Health Systems and the Welborn Baptist Foundation, among others. In the broader higher education community, she has served as chair of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference Council of Presidents, on the Executive Committee of the Coalition for Urban and Metropolitan Universities and has been an active member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).

She was recognized as the 2015 Evansville Rotary Civic Award winner, the 2016 Indiana Commission for Women Torchbearer Award and Trailblazer Award recipient, the 2017 Boy Scouts of America Buffalo Trace Council Distinguished Citizen Award winner and, in 2018, the Girl Scouts of Southwest Indiana Woman of Distinction Honoree and the Leadership Evansville Lifetime Award.

Bennett is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. She earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in political science from the University of Cincinnati. She came to USI from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where she served from 1999–2003 as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of political science.

Bennett and her husband, Dr. Stephen Bennett, reside in Evansville. She is retiring in June 2018.

4 Marshall L. Byers to Deliver Commencement Address

he 2018 Commencement speaker for the Romain College of TBusiness is Marshall L. Byers ’94. He graduated from USI in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance, and he is enrolled in USI’s Master of Business Administration online program with expected graduation in spring of 2019. He is currently the private client advisor vice president for investments for J.P. Morgan Chase in Indianapolis.

Byers started his banking career with Key Bank in 2002. He began as a branch manager where he profitably managed Key Bank’s largest Indiana branch, earning growth and profitability awards for three consecutive years. He also coached and mentored bank employees to identify investment opportunities from new and existing bank clients. In 2006, he became a financial advisor for Key Investment Services, where he provided comprehensive needs based on financial solutions to clients by offering a range of investment solutions.

In his current role with J.P. Morgan Chase, he helps families solve Marshall L. Byers ’94 M’19 complex financial problems, define investment goals, and implement and monitor investment and retirement plans. He also is a trainer and mentor for the bankers of Chase Private Client.

Byers is a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Central America and the Republic of Korea. He is a member of several service organizations, including Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Frontiers International – Indianapolis Chapter and Business Ownership of Indiana (BOI), where he is past chair. BOI aims to help central Indiana residents start and grow businesses through free one-on-one business coaching and access to training and resources. Byers also is a discussion leader with Bible Study Fellowship.

He, his wife Moraa and their daughter, Gabi, reside in Indianapolis. Moraa is currently enrolled in the USI Masters of Nursing program.

6 Patricia S. Avery to Deliver Commencement Address

he 2018 College of Liberal Arts Commencement speaker is TPatricia S. Avery ’04. A graduate of USI, Avery completed a bachelor of science degree in radio and television with an emphasis in journalism in 2004. She is currently a financial empowerment program specialist at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington, D.C.

After graduating, Avery began a career at Old National Bank where she served in various roles – director of associate communications, Bank on Evansville project manager and community outreach officer. As the community outreach officer, Avery maintained partnerships with the Indiana National Guard, Ivy Tech Community College and replicated the “Bank on” model in 15 Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky communities.

In her current position with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, she leads the development of training and implementation materials that equip non-profits and other service providers to implement the Your Money, Your Goals: A financial empowerment Patricia S. Avery ’04 toolkit program. Since the program’s field test and launch in 2013–2014, the program has recruited federal, national, state, tribal and local organizations that have trained over 25,000 individuals in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and three territories.

Avery has served the community through organizations such as Aurora, the lead agency for the Commission on Homelessness, which was the umbrella for the Raising Incomes and Homeless Youth work. She served as the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN) State Lead Ambassador, and on the American Cancer Society’s CEO Strategic Advisory Committee for Advocacy. She is currently a member of the ACS CAN National Ambassador Team.

Her professional and community work has led to numerous presentations and public speaking engagements. Avery has been recognized for her leadership efforts with the following awards: Leadership Evansville Individual Award in Government and Public Service; Phenomenal Women of USI and the Community; Thomas R. Early Humanitarian Award from the Tri-State Alliance; State Lead Ambassador of the Year; Advocate of the Year from the United Way of Southwestern Indiana; and in 2017, the Albion Fellows Bacon Award from the Women’s Equality Day of Evansville.

Avery and her husband Dennis reside in Evansville. Together, they have five children and five grandsons.

8 Kirt A. Page to Deliver Commencement Address

r. Kirt A. Page ’98 is the speaker for the 2018 Pott College of DScience, Engineering, and Education Commencement ceremony. He recently accepted the position of Dean of Academic Affairs at Connect University in Yangon, Myanmar.

A graduate of USI, Page received a bachelor of science in chemistry in 1998, graduating cum laude. He was honored with a Fulbright fellowship at the University of Mainz in Germany after graduating from USI. He earned his PhD in polymer science and engineering from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2005.

In 2005, he began working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow. His research focused on developing a fundamental understanding of the structure and dynamics of polymers in confined geometries and polymer brush systems, using a variety of characterization techniques including x-ray and neutron scattering. His career at NIST continued until 2015 with various roles as staff scientist in the materials science and Kirt A. Page ’98 engineering and polymers divisions, and science advisor in the material measurement laboratory.

In 2014, his family moved to New Delhi, India, due to his wife’s work, and Page became a high school mathematics and science instructor at the American Embassy School. When they moved to Yangon, Myanmar, in 2017, he began working as a freelance science editor, writer and educator.

Page’s most recent position of Dean of Academic Affairs at Connect University is most significant because of the current growth of higher education in Myanmar. In this role, he is the chief academic officer responsible for planning, implementing and coordinating the educational programming and academic policies of Connect University. He also is the first faculty member focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum development and implementation with a focus on physics and calculus.

Recognition for Page’s research includes a multitude of publications and awards, but most notably, he was one of 15 U.S. delegates chosen out of more than 300 applicants to participate in the -American Frontiers of Science, Engineering and Medicine Symposium.

Page and his wife, Jessica Farmer, live in Yangon, Myanmar, with their children Kendon and Bodhan.

10 Kimberly J. Harper to Deliver Commencement Address

imberly J. Harper ’87 ’13 is the 2018 Commencement speaker Kfor the College of Nursing and Health Professions. She received a diploma in nursing from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1976. In 1987, she earned her first degree from USI, a bachelor of science in nursing, and in 2013, a bachelor of science in health administration. Harper also received a master of science degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1991.

Currently, Harper is the chief executive officer at the Indiana Center for Nursing in Indianapolis. She is responsible for the overall direction of the activities related to the creation and ongoing growth of the state- wide Indiana Center for Nursing. Her role also includes operational and fiscal management, public relations, communications, fundraising and strategic planning of the 501(c)(3) organization at both the state and national level.

Prior to working for the Indiana Center for Nursing, Harper worked for Indiana University for nearly 30 years. Most of that time was Kimberly J. Harper ’87 ’13 with Indiana University Medical Center where she was in several administrative roles. In 2001, she became vice president of Wishard Health Services (now Eskenazi Health), an Indiana University partner.

She has participated in a year-long training program with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Strategic Communications Fellowship. She also has certification as a public information officer with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and she completed a fellowship for communication of public policy with America’s Essential Hospitals.

Her personal engagement and leadership extends internationally with Sigma Theta Tau and the Global Nursing Exchange, and the International Council of Nursing, where she has become a frequent international speaker. Nationally, Harper serves on many boards and coalitions in the health industry, and currently serves as the board chair-elect for the National Nurses on Boards Coalition, where she will become board chair July 1. She also is active with regional organizations directly affecting health care in Indiana.

She frequently presents nationally and internationally, and has been recognized with numerous awards. Most recently, in 2017, she was the USI Distinguished Nursing Alumni Award recipient and the Indiana State Nurses Association winner of the Excellence in Professional Practice Award.

Harper and her husband Bob live in Indianapolis. They have two children and three grandchildren.

Candidate applications for honorary degrees from the University of Southern Indiana are reviewed by a committee defined by the honorary degree award policy. Recommendations are submitted to the president for approval by the USI Board of Trustees. Such a degree is the highest form of recognition granted by USI.
