Ry Cooder's 'One Meat Ball'
RY COODER AND ‘ONE MEAT BALL’ Ry Cooder is not just a superb musician and writer: he is also a superb archivist, and a master at finding and resuscitating old songs. He Carl Tighe has done this several times. One of the songs he rediscovered, reinvented and recorded is ‘One Meat Ball’. Ry (Ryland) Cooder was born on 15 March 1947 in Los Angeles, California. He lost an eye at the age of four and is said to have taken up guitar as a kind of compensatory activity. He first attracted attention with his guitar playing when he was working with The Seeds. He went on to play with Taj Mahal’s band The Rising Sons and later with Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band. He has played with The Rolling Stones, Little Feat, The Chieftains, John Lee Hooker, Ali Farka Touré and he has written several film scores including the music and soundtrack for Wim Wender’s film Paris Texas (1984). Cooder’s recording career began with the album Ry Cooder (1970), and now includes dust bowl folk music, Tex-Mex, soul, gospel, rock and roll, blues, rag-time, jazz, cross- over and just about everything in between. At a time when the US still has a total embargo on contact and trade with revolutionary communist Cuba, Cooder has been a major force behind the rediscovery of Cuban music and Cuban musicians. Cooder risked his citizenship to visit Cuba and to record the Buena Vista Social Club. He later worked on Wim Wender’s documentary The Buena Vista Social Club (1999), which was nominated for an Academy award. -
Charles Ammi Cutter
CHAPTER I EARLY LIFE AND HARVARD STUDENT YEARS Early Years Charles Ammi Cutter was a member of a nineteenth century family that can be described as, "solid New England stock." The members had a pride in ancestry "not so much because their forbears were prominent in the social, polit- ical, or financial world, but because they were hard-working, plain-living, clear-thinking, and devout people, with high ideals.,,1 The Cutter fa_ily had its start in America with the arrival in Massachusetts from Newcastle-on-Tyne in Eng- land of the widow, Elizabeth Cutter, and her two sons about 1640. Through her son, Richard, she became the progenitress of descendants who, each in his own way, helped to civilize the colonial wilderness and who played a part in bringing the young nation through its revolutionary birth pains. 2 The Cutters were primarily farmers and merchants but included among their ranks clergymen, physicians, and later, 1 W. Folklorist Francis James Child worked it up as a fake Italian Operetta “Il Pesceballo” performed in 1862 at a fundraiser for the United States Sanitary Commission (precursor to the American Red Cross). You can find the “Il Pesceballo” libretto on Google Books. Tin Pan Alley’s Hy Zaret and Lou Singer updated the song as “One Meatball” in 1944. -

Nota Bene Vol. 16 No. 1 NEWS FROM THE HARVARD DEPARTMENT OF THE CLASSICS Fall/Winter 2010-11 Notes from the Chair by John Duffy t has been an eventful time for the Classics at Harvard since the Nota Bene issue of last May and I will single out some of the more notable happenings. The sterling work of ITeresa Wu, who represents the ne plus ultra of department administration, came in for long over-due recognition when she received in June an Impact Award given to the highest- achieving FAS staff members. Also of sterling quality was the incoming group of six new graduate students, three men and three women, who bring the expected wide range of talents for language and literature, for non-academic pursuits, and for general good humor. Summertime saw the annual fanning out of our students in search of learning adventures in Italy, Greece, and other parts of Europe. The Segal Fund made it possible for Iya Megre to experience the excitement of digging at Ostia and, thanks to the ever-expanding initiatives of Greg Nagy and his team at CHS, several concentrators were able to get a taste of Greece and expand their horizons in Olympia and Nafplio. Meanwhile graduate student Tom Keeline went hangnailing in Bavaria for two months (he did what?—you will have to read his report). Not many good things have come our way since the beginning of the recession and the inevitable tightening of the financial belt, which continues to squeeze. One new program, however, has so far given us three Harvard College Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows. -

One Hundred Years of the Loeb Classical Library
One hundred years of the Loeb Classical Library G.H.R. Horsley Abstract: 2011 marks the centenary of the Loeb Classical Library. Founded in 1911 by James Loeb, the series has been served by seven editors and two publishers. More than 500 volumes have appeared and remain in print. The paper offers an assessment of the series’ achievement, and notes both innovations it introduced as well as shifts in emphasis over time. Its influence on a number of other publishing enterprises also receives mention. For Janet and Rod West, ad multos annos! 1. Introduction To coincide with Harvard University’s 375th anniversary on Friday 14 October 2011, a celebratory dinner was held at the University in Loeb House to mark the centenary of the Loeb Classical Library (LCL; Figure 1). Present were the three Trustees of the LCL, the current General Editor of the series, Faculty members of The Classics, staff of the Harvard University Press (HUP) and of the typesetting company, a score of the contributors (one-third of those still living), and others. The speakers were Richard Thomas (the Classics member of the Board of Trustees; Figure 2), Glen Bowersock (himself a contributor to the LCL series), and Mark Schiefsky (Chair of the Dept of The Classics).
