Nate Archibald first appeared in Cecily von Ziegesar’s book Gossip Girl and the subsequent book in the series by von Ziegesar, including the ghost-written books, with his last appearance being the final book in the series I Will Always Love You. Nate is one of the main male characters in the book series and is a constant subject of affection from many of the female characters. Nate is a character plagued by indecision as well as plagued by inner conflict as he struggles between who he wants to be and who others want him to be. Nate is introduced as a son to Howard Archibald and Anne Archibald. He seems on the surface to be an overachiever, a lacrosse player at, St. Jude’s School for Boys, and best friends with main characters Chuck Bass, Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf. His mother is a wealthy French woman and socialite and his father is a wealthy banker. His family resides in a wealthy part of Manhattan on the Upper East Side in a comfortable townhouse of Park Avenue and he spends time in his family’s Summer chateau in Nice that comes from Nate’s French socialite family. Nate constantly feels the pressure of wanting to be his own person while fighting against the life his family wants him to live, which includes going to an Ivy League college, Blair as his wife and the culture of New York’s Upper East Side. Nate is a fan of sailing and expresses interest in pursuing sailing full time away from New York City. Nate smokes large amounts of marijuana and is sent to a rehabilitation center after being caught purchasing the drug during the book series. Nate serves as a constant presence in the book series as he is the consistent object of affection between main characters Blair Waldorf and Serena van Der Woodsen as well as Jenny Humphrey, the sister of another main character who is named Dan Humphrey. In the beginning of the series in Gossip Girl, Nate has been dating Blair and is about to have an intimate relationship with her when their old friend Serena Van Der Woodsen returns from boarding school and it is revealed that Nate and Serena had sex the previous summer. As a result, Serena dumps Nate and the series of events in the first book unfolds. Nate remains a consistent part of the series as it continues as he develops a relationships with Jenny Humphrey. Jenny Humphrey also attends Constance Billard School for girls, the same school as Blaire and Serena and is an attractive, short brunette. The two become romantic and Jenny falls madly in love with Nate. This relationship turns out for the worse as Jenny becomes quite obsessive with Nate to the point of being dangerous. As a result of the negative experience with Jenny, Nate realizes it was not Jenny who he truly loved but he experiences personal troubles and is sent to rehab as a result of drug indiscretions. In rehab, Nate meets a new girl named Georgina Spark, a strong individual who is quiet beautiful but who has a dark and manipulative side that is often ruthless with a great talent for scheming. She and Nate spend time together in rehab and form a bond and eventually start dating for a short period of time before Georgina’s wild side proves to be too much for Nate. Nate then becomes the object of Blair and Serena’s affections through the next books in the series as a variety of key events in his life play out. He focuses heavily on his lacrosse career and if he will play the sport in college. Nate is accepted into all of the schools he applied to, including Yale but all the while he hopes to be left alone and escape the pressures of his environment and to be the person he truly wants to be. In the later books by Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl series that were written by her, a constant theme is the love triangle between Nate, Serena and Blair and the dynamics between the three are covered heavily in the books and by the Gossip Girl character. While Nate has feelings for both, and both have feelings for Nate, these conflicting feelings often lead the two best friends, Serena and Blaire at odds and looking to get back at one another despite their long term friendship. While the love triangle continues in these books, Nate eventually ends up with one of the two at the end of high school as the three prepare for the new chapters in their life: attending college. Despite the fact that one of the girls has ended up with Nate at this juncture, this rivalry seems to have softened with the two girls seemingly making amends about the fact that one ended up with Nate. As the series continued with a ghost writer, it becomes obvious that though Nate is now not with Serena or Blair, they still harbor strong feelings for him. Nate becomes the object of affection for a new love named Tawny and they begin dating, however when Serena and Blair meet her they are not impressed. After breaking off the relationship with Tawny, the love triangle between Serena, Blair and Nate continues throughout the last few books and the familiar pattern of Nate having feelings for both characters that are reciprocated by the two girls continues. As the series ends in I Will Always Love You, the original cast returns to New York after having completed various stages of their life. Blair is studying law, Serena is a movie star and despite their various lives, feelings are still shared between the three. Nate is still stuck in a period of indecision as to who he truly loves and by the end of the book and series a series of events plays out that will settle once and for all who is right for each other. ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot to premiere on HBO Max in July. Yes, a new Gossip Girl reboot is coming in 2021—and it honestly sounds amazing. “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl,” the log line reads, per Deadline. “The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.” Beyond that, here’s what we know so far about the series. It will premiere July 8, 2021. The premiere date was previously noted in April… There will be 10 episodes. According to Deadline, HBO has ordered 10 hour-long episodes of the new version of the show. It’ll tackle contemporary issues, including social media and online privacy, that has changed some of the dynamics in today’s high schools. The first teaser trailer dropped at the end of May. However, in the years since the original Gossip Girl , Safran’s outlook has definitely done a 180. On May 14, 2021, Safran tweeted that this round of Upper East Siders will not partake in some of the more problematic tropes from his first run. “No slut-shaming. No catfights. Those are not things I believe need to be in this show for it to be fun,” he tweeted. “Or any show? GG2 is sex positive and our characters use their brains, not their brawn, to take you out!” While Safran may have expected fans to rejoice over this news, some were perplexed. Although we didn’t see her face on our screens (until the final episode), Bell’s voiceovers are as much a part of the iconic show as Blair’s and Serena’s styles. We felt that a version with our cast grown up, regardless of what the challenges would be of assembling those actors again, it didn’t really feel like a group of adults that would be patrolled by Gossip Girl would make a lot of sense.” “So we thought there was something really interesting about the idea that we are all Gossip Girl now, in our own way, that we are all purveyors of our own social media surveillance state and how that has evolved and how that has mutated and morphed and telling that through a new generation of Upper East Side high school kids,” he added. In a December 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight , Safran confirmed Serena, Blair, Nate, and Dan will be a part of the Gossip Girl reimagining whether or not the stars choose to return. He explained that the new series will mention past characters because “the universe still exists.” “They are a part of the world,” Safran said. “The characters talk about them and that they do exist. So yeah, I would love to have them come back. The show jumped five years in the future when it ended and we are past that five years now, so it’s whole new things that they could be doing.” “I think of [the new show] like the Marvel universe. It’s not a continuation or a sequel. It truly just is looking at a different angle,” he added. Safran also confirmed the new show will address what the original characters are up to following the 2012 series finale. “Well, we talk about what happened to Dan, so I might have to text Penn and see if he’s really available,” Safran said. “Penn also works constantly, but we’ll see if we can rope him in there. Yeah, I don’t know.” But what about the newbies? On March 2, 2020, we finally got news of who will be playing one of the lead characters. I know kids who have gone through things and feel very alone. When you watch movies or television, you don’t want to see the perfect person all the time. It gets really boring.” On March 11, 2020, Deadline announced four new actors joining the show: Rookie magazine founder Tavi Gevinson ( Scream Queens ), along with Thomas Doherty ( High Fidelity ), Adam Chanler-Berat ( Next to Normal ), and Zion Moreno ( Claws ). We are looking at a group of friends in their junior year. Those pieces are the same. They’re still in the uniforms,” Safran told E.T. in December. “Not everyone lives on the Upper East Side, though. Brooklyn’s not the bad place to live. Brooklyn’s probably cooler in the new version than Manhattan, ’cause it is in some places. Other than that, it has the DNA of the original.” But the kids will absolutely have a different relationship with social media than the original crew. “I think it very much represents where we will be at in 2020 when the show airs. It really looks at how social media has changed,” Safran also said. “You know, the first time around, when the show started, people were, like, checking in places on Foursquare and updating their locations on Facebook. Things we would never do now because we don’t want anyone to know where we are. That change alone changes the dynamic of what Gossip Girl means and how Gossip Girl interacts with the kids this day and age, so I think it’s gonna be really interesting to see. The modern age reflected through Gossip Girl.” The leads are nonwhite, and there will be plenty of LGBTQ+ storylines. Joshua Safran, who wrote and executive-produced the original show, confirmed this at Vulture Festival on November 10, 2019. “There was not a lot of representation the first time around on the show,” he said. “I was the only gay writer I think the entire time I was there. Even when I went to private school in New York in the ’90s, the school didn’t necessarily reflect what was on Gossip Girl. So this time around the leads are nonwhite. There’s a lot of queer content on this show. It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that. The thing I can’t say is there is a twist, and that all relates to the twist.” Thomas Doherty, who plays Chuck Bass–esque character Max Wolfe, revealed to Cosmo , “Yes, I do get naked, and yes, I do indulge [in gay love scenes].” Zión Moreno, who is trans, didn’t say whether her character, Luna La, is trans as well, but her participation in the show is representation in itself. The new series will definitely have its own take. In an interview with Dazed , four of the stars of the new series hinted (vaguely; the plot is still under wraps) about what topics and taboos the upcoming reboot will address. Emily Alyn Lind says that in one of her earliest meetings with show creator Joshua Safran, he said the new series would include “new issues and topics.” For her part, Lind hasn’t seen the original series beyond the first season and doesn’t plan to. “I wanted to start fresh,” she said. “It’s a new take on it, a different time. It’s not a reboot, it’s a continuation, so we have an entirely new story and I think that’s really important.”
