The Evolution of Social Media Social Media has been around since the late 1990s but has only started to impact society largely since 2004 in the introduction of Facebook. Over the past 16 years, there has been a lot of social media sites come and go, but we have listed the ones we believe that have had the largest impact on our in our timeline: 2004 Facebook In 2004 Mark Zuckerberg 2005 created Facebook. It was originally called Thefacebook and later changed to Facebook, it now has over 1.6 billion users. YouTube 2005 In 2005 YouTube was created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim as a video-sharing website, users can upload, view, rate, comment on videos, while being able to subscribe to content on the site. As of Reddit October 2020, YouTube is the 2006 second most popular website in In 2005 Reddit was created by the world. Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, and Aaron Swartz. As a platform for news aggregation and social commentary with over 300 million users. 2010 Twitter In 2006 Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone. you have a limited number of characters to get your ideas across, it can be through both words and images. Instagram 2010 In 2010 Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom as a photo-sharing site and purchased by Facebook in 2012. It is used by over 1 bilion people. Pinterest 2011 In 2010 Pinterest was created by Ben Silbermann, Evan Sharp and Paul Sciarra as a way for people to share visual ideas and inspiration for various projects. it currently has 322 million Snapchat users. In 2011 Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy 2015 and Reggie Brown. it was originally called Picaboo but they changed it to Snapchat three months later. It currently has 249 million users worldwide and is availble in 37 languages. Discord 2016 In 2015 Discord was created by Jason Citron and was originally designed for gamers. Today, it has over 250 million registered users with an average of 25 billion messages sent monthly TikTok In 2016 TikTok was developed by ByteDance in China the Chinese name for it is Douyin. It is a video sharing site that was merged with a U.s based site called Musical.ly in 2018. Short 30 to 60-second videos are created, there are many different genres of video from baking, education and dance. .

Mark Zuckerberg I'm glad we got a chance to talk yesterday. I appreciate the open style you have for working through these issues. It makes me want to work with you even more. I was th inking about our conversation some more and wanted to share a few more thoughts. On the thread about lnstagram joining Facebook, I'm really excited about what we can do to grow lnstagram as an independent brand and product while also having you take on a major leadership role within Facebook that spans all of our photos products, including mobile photos, desktop photos, private photo sharing and photo searching and browsing. This would be a role where we'd be working closely together and you'd have a lot of space to shape the way that the vast majority of the workd's photos are shared and accessed. We have ~300m photos added daily with tens of billions already in the system. We have almost 1O0m mobile photos a day as well and it's growing really quickly -- and that's without us releasing and promoting our mobile photos product yet. We also have a lot of our infrastructure built p around storing and serving photos, querying them, etc which we can do some amazing things with . Overall I'm really excited about what you'd be able to do with this and what we could do together. One thought I had on this is that it might be worth you spending some time with.to get a sense for the impact you could have here and the value of using all of the infrastructure that we've built up rather than having to build everything from scratch at a startup.

What happened next was crazier than they could have imagined. In a matter of hours, thousands downloaded it. The computer systems handling the photos kept crashing. Neither of them knew what to do. “Who’s, like, the smartest person I know who I can call up?” Mr. Systrom remembered thinking. He scrolled through his phone and found his man: Adam D’Angelo, a former chief technology officer at Facebook. They had met at a party seven years earlier, over beers in red plastic cups, at the Sigma Nu fraternity at Stanford University. That night in October 2010, Mr. D’Angelo became Instagram’s lifeline. “Adam spent like 30 minutes on the phone with us,” Mr. Systrom recalled, “walking us through the basic things we needed to do to get back up.” Mr. Systrom, now 29, offered this as a parable for the roomful of would-be entrepreneurs who came to hear him talk at Stanford last spring: in the intensely competitive start-up scene here, success is as much about who you know as what you know. “Make sure to spend some time after the talk getting to know the people around you,” he told his audience. Coinciding with the rise of social media has been an increasing interest in leftist ideologies once outside the mainstream. This analysis seeks to understand the social media site Reddit.com’s enabling and constraining features on the community /r/socialism. Using the communicative theory of identity and Marxist media theory not only to look at Reddit and /r/socialism’s relationship, but five key functions of a media: capital-economic, media sales and media market function, commodity circulation, domination, and the audience. Employing a mixed-methods approach enabled various data to be analyzed and relationally understood. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine user’s salient topics and their uses for the community. Survey methods were deployed to the community to gather demographic data on the /r/socialism community and user opinions on the group’s relationship with Reddit. Finally, secondary documents were analyzed to provide greater context to the other findings. Findings from the content analysis of salient subjects showed a preference for contemporary capitalist critique, socialist quotations, and class issues. However, topics impacting women and other minority groups were light to nonexistent.

A DataDriven Approach May 2021 Tolga Buz Gerard de Melo Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Reddit’s WallStreetBets (WSB) community has come to prominence in light of its notable role in affecting the stock prices of what are now referred to as meme stocks. Yet very little is known about the reliability of the highly speculative investment advice disseminated on WSB. This paper analyses WSB data spanning from January 2019 to April 2021 in order to assess how successful an investment strategy relying on the community’s recommenda tions could have been. We detect buy and sell advice and identify the community’s most popular stocks, based on which we define a WSB portfolio. Our evaluation shows that this portfolio has grown approx. 200% over the last three years and approx. 480% over the last year, significantly outperforming the S&P500. The average shortterm accuracy of buy and sell signals, in contrast, is not found to be significantly better than randomly or equally distributed buy decisions within the same time frame. However, we present a tech nique for estimating whether posts are proactive as opposed to reactive and show that by focusing on a subset of more promising buy signals, a trader could have made investments yielding higher returns than the broader market or the strategy of trusting all posted buy signals. Lastly, the analysis is also conducted specifically for the period before 2021 in or der to factor out the effects of the GameStop hype of January 2021 – the results confirm the conclusions and suggest that the 2021 hype merely amplified preexisting characteristics.
