A quantitative and intersectional study of ele- ven non-standard variables through the lens of gender, age, and ethnicity This thesis studies the relationships between non-standard online wri- ting practices and gender on the American community website Reddit. It is based on a corpus of nearly 20 million tokens which contains the com- ments written in English by 1,044 internet users, including 300 trans- gender and non-binary people. Using an intersectional sociolinguistic ap- proach, it examines the interaction of gender with age and ethnicity. Eleven non-standard variables were investigated : six additive processes (emoti- cons, emojis, letter lengthenings, punctuation lengthenings, all caps and interjections) and five reduction processes (abbreviations, phonetic spel- lings, g-droppings, apostrophe omissions and lower case spellings of the pronoun “I”). In addition to these linguistic analyses, the thesis explores how Internet users construct their virtual identities and occupy the Red- dit space, by focusing on the most visible markers of Redditors’ activity in the community : pseudonyms, interests, “karma”, longevity of the accounts and forum moderation. The analyses, which are mainly based on the mul- tiple regression method, provide a nuanced account of the way Redditors use non-standard language to index their gender identity. They show, in particular, that transgender women and men rarely align with cisgender women and men. They also suggest that Hispanic and African-American women play a major role in the spread of non-standard spelling and typo- graphy. vi Remerciements Mes remerciements vont tout d’abord à ma directrice de thèse Sophie Bailly, pour son accompagnement bienveillant, pertinent et enthousiaste pendant ces quatre années. HOME> TECHNOLOGY Reddit, Google Crack Down on Posting Nude Pics SAN FRANCISCO — Feb 24, 2015, 8:03 PM ET By MICHAEL LIEDTKE AP Technology Writer S hare 0 Share on email 5 Comments Reddit and Google are taking a tougher stance against nudity to prevent their services from turning into online peep shows. Social-networking and news site Reddit says it will remove photos, videos and links with explicit content if the person in the image hasn't given permission for it to be posted. Google Inc., the Internet's most powerful company, is going to ban most nude photos and video from publicly accessible sites on its popular Blogger service. The crackdown marks a shift in attitude for two services that have traditionally been freewheeling forums where users could literally let it all hang out. The lax approach has opened the door for nude and sexually explicit photos and video to be posted on Reddit and Blogger, even if the subjects featured in the images intended them to remain private. Until now, Reddit has had a hands-off approach to privacy, largely allowing its 160 million users to police their own forums within certain guidelines such as no child pornography or spam. The change comes about six months after hackers obtained nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities and posted them to social media sites including Reddit and Twitter. Without specifically calling out Reddit or Twitter, Lawrence lashed out at the sites that permitted nude photos to be posted of her. She likened the unauthorized use of photos of her body as a "sex crime." A Tuesday posting signed by Reddit interim CEO Ellen Pao and other company executives said the shift is an effort to help grow the site "for the next 10 years and beyond." Effective March 10, Reddit will prohibit any photograph, video or digital image of a person who is nude or engaged in a sexual act if the subject hasn't given permission for it to be used.

Kleiner Perkins Leyi Cao Nanjing Foreign Language School, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, 210000, China [email protected] Keywords: Asian American women, Bamboo ceiling, US high-tech workplaces, Intersectionality. Abstract. In the 21st century, Asian American women, as a group, are considered to face certain barriers-the bamboo ceiling in US high-tech workplaces specifically. The existence of such barriers and the choice of action toward the barriers become what people concern most about. Based on these issues, this paper first analyzes data to reveal the overview of the current situation of Asian American women in American High-Tech workplaces and are shown from comparisons between different social groups. Moreover, the paper also discusses a specific case raised by an individual Asian American Women against her employer company. Based on further analysis of the case, which is combined with the concept of intersectionality, the paper suggests more considerations of intersectionality and encourages more actions of Asian American women fighting for equality. 1.Introduction The glass ceiling faced by Asian Americans in current US workplaces is often recognized as the bamboo ceiling, referring to the practices that keep Asians from entering higher-paying, and more prominent jobs. By further considering Asian American women as a social group, intersectionality, in this paper, is employed to recognizing the intersection of race and gender in this issue.

  • The Community Industry: an Analysis of Reddit and /R/Socialism
THE COMMUNITY INDUSTRY: AN ANALYSIS OF REDDIT AND /R/SOCIALISM Richard Babb A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Samuel T McAbee, Graduate Faculty Representative Lara Lengel Yanqin Lu © 2021 Richard Babb All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Social media is an increasingly important space for community formation and interactions. Coinciding with the rise of social media has been an increasing interest in leftist ideologies once outside the mainstream. This analysis seeks to understand the social media site Reddit.com’s enabling and constraining features on the community /r/socialism. Using the communicative theory of identity and Marxist media theory not only to look at Reddit and /r/socialism’s relationship, but five key functions of a media: capital-economic, media sales and media market function, commodity circulation, domination, and the audience. Employing a mixed-methods approach enabled various data to be analyzed and relationally understood. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine user’s salient topics and their uses for the community. Survey methods were deployed to the community to gather demographic data on the /r/socialism community and user opinions on the group’s relationship with Reddit. Finally, secondary documents were analyzed to provide greater context to the other findings. Findings from the content analysis of salient subjects showed a preference for contemporary capitalist critique, socialist quotations, and class issues. However, topics impacting women and other minority groups were light to nonexistent.

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Sciemce June 2018 An Abstract of the Thesis of Claire Kapiolani Solomon for the degree of Bachelor of Science in the Department of Business Administration to be taken June 2018 Title: Raising Venture Capital: The Different Methodologies and Outcomes of Female and Male Entrepreneurs Approved: _______________________________________ Stephen McKeon This thesis analyzes how venture capitalist funding is rationed and provides insight into why female-founded companies receive only 3% of total venture capitalist funding. In order to understand this, this thesis analyzes the relationship between venture capitalist partners and founders. Relationships are often different between investors and male entrepreneurs than between investors and female entrepreneurs. This research explains why this environment has become unsupportive of women and thus proves to be challenging for women to succeed in. The role of gender perception is also vital, and this research project will make a connection between gender biases and underfunding of women entrepreneurs. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Professor Steve McKeon, Professor Elizabeth Raisanen, and Professor Katherine Harmon for their support and guidance through the development of my research. I would furthermore like to thank both the Robert D. Clark Honors College and the Lundquist College of Business for the incredible academic opportunities they have provided me over the last four years. Lastly, I honor my sister and mother for the passion they have embedded in me to become a leader for women in business, and to continue encouraging the success of women everywhere.

  • Conservative and Innovative Behaviour by Female Speakers in a Multilingual Micronesian Society*
Conservative and innovative behaviour by female speakers in a multilingual Micronesian society* Kazuko Matsumoto and David Britain Department of Language and Linguistics University of Essex Wivenhoe Park Colchester CO4 3SQ U.K. [email protected] [email protected] Abstract The focus of this article is the supposed ‘Gender Paradox’, proposed by Labov (1990, 2001), that women are both sometimes conservative and sometimes innovative in terms of linguistic variation and change. Here we explore the paradox from two perspectives: we both investigate its applicability to multilingual as opposed to multidialectal communities as well as question whether the paradox is methodological or real. Although much sociolinguistic research on the paradox has been on macro studies of men vs. women in monolingual multidialectal communities, this paper presents quantitative analyses supplemented by in-depth ethnographic observation and data collection in communities of practice in a multilingual Japanese-Palauan community of the Western Pacific. What is more, and perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the ‘conservatism’ and ‘innovation’ of women in the community under scrutiny is represented by the use of the very same language –Japanese. For older Japanese Palauan women, the greater use of Japanese represents adherence to their heritage language. Among younger Japanese-Palauan women (most of whom are bilingual in Palauan and English), however, the use of Japanese represents a change towards a language highly valued in the economy as essential for the promotion

  • PERSONALITY, GENDER, and the NORTHERN CITIES SHIFT By
PERSONALITY, GENDER, AND THE NORTHERN CITIES SHIFT By Steve Leonard Johnson III A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Linguistics 2012 ABSTRACT PERSONALITY, GENDER, AND THE NORTHERN CITIES SHIFT By Steve Leonard Johnson III Studies of sound changes in sociolinguistics have shown a consistent trend that women tend to be linguistically innovative and lead most of the major sound changes. Additionally, women have been shown to use more standard variants than men in stable sociolinguistic variables, giving rise to the “gender paradox” where women are both linguistically conservative and innovative. Studies that examine variation within sex groups unravel this paradox by showing that different women behave differently— some being conservative language users while others are innovative. Traditional methods that aim to examine the role of gender in ongoing sociolinguistic change often use sex as a binary variable instead of socially defined degrees of masculinity and femininity. These methods group all women, innovative and conservative, into one sex-based group, and the distinction between those who lead the change and lag behind is lost. Additionally, qualitative studies of leaders of linguistic change have shown similarities in leaders, but there are no quantitative methods to predict leaders of change. This dissertation goes beyond traditional studies of gender variation to create a quantitative methodology to examine leaders in linguistic changes and explain gender- based patterns of linguistic behavior. A representative set of vowel tokens from speakers from Southeastern Michigan was measured and normalized for each subject, and these data were used in multiple regression analyses to identify how speakers pattern in respect to the Northern Cities Shift (NCS), a female-led sound change in the vowel system of speakers from urban Great Lakes areas, and possible factors affecting changes.

Many features of speech have been shown to vary depending on speaker sex and gender such as pitch, lexis, syntax and volume. On a more fine-grained level, fricatives have been shown to index speaker sex and this was initially attributed to biological sex differences; ‘larger’ males would have a physically larger vocal tract and thus have lower peak frequencies.

Should You Take Investment Advice From WallStreetBets? Should You Take Investment Advice From WallStreetBets? A DataDriven Approach May 2021 Tolga Buz Gerard de Melo Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Reddit’s WallStreetBets (WSB) community has come to prominence in light of its notable role in affecting the stock prices of what are now referred to as meme stocks. Yet very little is known about the reliability of the highly speculative investment advice disseminated on WSB. This paper analyses WSB data spanning from January 2019 to April 2021 in order to assess how successful an investment strategy relying on the community’s recommenda tions could have been. We detect buy and sell advice and identify the community’s most popular stocks, based on which we define a WSB portfolio. Our evaluation shows that this portfolio has grown approx. 200% over the last three years and approx. 480% over the last year, significantly outperforming the S&P500. The average shortterm accuracy of buy and sell signals, in contrast, is not found to be significantly better than randomly or equally distributed buy decisions within the same time frame. However, we present a tech nique for estimating whether posts are proactive as opposed to reactive and show that by focusing on a subset of more promising buy signals, a trader could have made investments yielding higher returns than the broader market or the strategy of trusting all posted buy signals. Lastly, the analysis is also conducted specifically for the period before 2021 in or der to factor out the effects of the GameStop hype of January 2021 – the results confirm the conclusions and suggest that the 2021 hype merely amplified preexisting characteristics.

DOI: 10.14763/ 2020.4.1516 Keywords: Reddit, Affordances, Misogyny, Manosphere, Digital platforms, Online platforms Abstract: This paper studies the efficacy of the Reddit’s quarantine, increasingly implemented in the platform as a means of restricting and reducing misogynistic and other hateful material. Using the case studies of r/TheRedPill and r/Braincels, the paper argues the quarantine successfully cordoned off affected subreddits and associated hateful material from the rest of the platform. It did not, however, reduce the levels of hateful material within the affected spaces. Instead many users reacted by leaving Reddit for less regulated spaces, with Reddit making this hateful material someone else’s problem. The paper argues therefore that the success of the quarantine as a policy response is mixed. 2 Internet Policy Review 9(4) | 2020 This paper is part of Trust in the system, a special issue of Internet Policy Review guest- edited by Péter Mezei and Andreea Verteş-Olteanu.
