New island record On 6 October 1995, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife employee C. Joao submitted an unusual plant he found while work- ing in the Molokai Forest Reserve. The plant was identified as U. europaeus and con- firmed by a Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) nox-A survey of the site on 9 October revealed an infestation of ca. 19 m2 at about 457 m elevation in the Kamiloa Distr., ca. 6.2 km above Kamehameha Highway. Distribution in Wagner et al. (1990, Manual of the flowering plants of Hawai‘i, p. 716) listed as Maui and Hawaii. Material examined: MOLOKAI: Molokai Forest Reserve, 4 Dec 1995, Guy Nagai s.n. Ferzoco Master of Science Graduate Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Theory has proposed that a trade-off causing negative covariance in competitive and colonization abilities (the competition-colonization trade-off) is an important mechanism enabling coexistence of species across local and regional scales. However, empirical tests of this trade-off are limited, especially in naturalistic conditions with active dispersers; organisms capable of making their own movement decisions. I tested the competition-colonization trade-off in two co-occurring flight-capable semi-aquatic insect backswimmers (Notonecta undulata and Notonecta irrorata). Using field mesocosm experiments and laboratory experiments, I measured components of dispersal and competition to determine if and how the competition-colonization trade-off enables coexistence in this system. This thesis reveals that backswimmer species exhibited clear differences in dispersal behaviour and yet competition proved to be multi-faceted and context-dependent. This work suggests that in active dispersers, there is a great deal of complexity in competition and dispersal. Determinamos las especies de heterópteros acuáticos y semiacuáticos, Nepomorpha y Gerromorpha, que habitan en los ecosistemas acuáticos de este bosque seco, basado en la revisión de publicaciones y de la colección de Entomología PSO-CZ. Se registraron 27 especies: Gerromorpha, 21 especies y Nepomorpha, 6 especies. Palabras clave. Nadadores de espalda. Neotrópico. Patinadores. Sudamérica. Abstract The dry forests of the Patía River, in the Departments of Cauca and Nariño, are some of the most degraded and highly vulnerable ecosystems facing climate change in Colombia, and they are considered high priority areas for conservation. We identified aquatic and semiaquatic heteropterans (Nepomorpha and Gerromorpha) that inhabit the aquatic ecosystems in these dry forests, based on literature and on the PSO-CZ Entomological Collection. There were 27 species: Gerromorpha, 21 species and Nepomorpha, 6 species. Key word. Back swimmers. Neotropical Region. South America. water striders. We present here a checklist for Goiás based on literature and specimens collected, with 18 species of Notonectidae, including new distribution records of Martarega membranacea White, 1879, and first records of Buenoa konta Nieser & Pelli, 1994; Buenoa pseudomutabilis Barbosa, Ribeiro & Nessimian, 2010; Buenoa tarsalis Truxal, 1953; Martarega bentoi Truxal, 1949 and Martarega brasiliensis Truxal, 1949 in the State. This checklist highlights a gap in the knowledge of Notonectidae and a great necessity of works with diversity of backswimmers in Goiás. Lansbury HOPE DEPARTMENT OF ENTOMOLOGY, UNIVERSITY MUSEUM, OXFORD Abstract: This paper redescribes most of the species recorded from the Oriental Region. Keys to both sexes are given. Fifteen species and 1 subspecies are described for the first time. Five species are placed in synonymy and three previously described species have proved unrecognisable. This paper embodies the results of a study of the Oriental species of the genus Enithares. The main purpose being to collate the scattered descriptions and information concerning this genus. The geographical scope is limited to those species occurring east of the 60° of longitude. African, Mascarene and American species are excluded. No phylogenetic speculation is implied in any part of this paper. Wherever possible types have been examined in order to fix the species. In a few cases where types are no longer extant or available for study, I have utilized 'compared' specimens or the concept of the last reviewer. Full details are given under the relevant species. SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA). -

Out of these, six orders contain species engaged in entomophagy, but very few are being harvested effectively, leading to over-exploitation and local extinction. Examples of existing practices are given, ranging from the extremes of including insects (e.g., dipterans) in the dietary cores of many indigenous peoples to consumption of selected insects, by a wealthy few, as novelty food (e.g., caddisflies). The comparative nutritional worth of aquatic insects to the human diet and to domestic animal feed is examined. Questions are raised as to whether natural populations of aquatic insects can yield sufficient biomass to be of practicable and sustained use, whether some species can be brought into high-yield cultivation, and what are the requirements and limitations involved in achieving this? Gillett-Kaufman2 Introduction Notonecta glauca, the common backswimmer (Figure 1), is an aquatic insect in the family Notonectidae. Insects in this family are commonly referred to as backswimmers or greater water boatman. Notonectids propel themselves through the water with their ventral side (belly) facing upwards, hence their common name of backswimmers (Figure 2). Flickr.com Distribution Although commonly collected in Europe (Soós et al. 2009), the common backswimmer can range from parts of northern Africa to western Siberia and northwestern China (Berchi 2013). Notonecta glauca is typically found in inland freshwater ponds, although they can be found in eutrophic (water excessively enriched in nutrients) freshwater bodies near the sea (Kjærstad et al. 2009). Many other Notonecta species occur in North America north of Mexico (Torre Bueno 1905). It is unclear if this species could become established if introduced to Florida, but its current distribu- tion includes several locations with similar climates and habitats. Figure 1.
