RECORDS OF THE HAWAII BIOLOGICAL SURVEY FOR 1995 Part 2: Notes1 This is the second of two parts to the Records of the Hawaii Biological Survey for 1995 and contains the notes on Hawaiian species of plants and animals including new state and island records, range extensions, and other information. Larger, more compre- hensive treatments and papers describing new taxa are treated in the first part of this Records [Bishop Museum Occasional Papers 45]. New Hawaiian Pest Plant Records for 1995 PATRICK CONANT (Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture, Plant Pest Control Branch, 1428 S King St, Honolulu, HI 96814) Fabaceae Ulex europaeus L. New island record On 6 October 1995, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife employee C. Joao submitted an unusual plant he found while work- ing in the Molokai Forest Reserve. The plant was identified as U. europaeus and con- firmed by a Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) nox-A survey of the site on 9 October revealed an infestation of ca. 19 m2 at about 457 m elevation in the Kamiloa Distr., ca. 6.2 km above Kamehameha Highway. Distribution in Wagner et al. (1990, Manual of the flowering plants of Hawai‘i, p. 716) listed as Maui and Hawaii. Material examined: MOLOKAI: Molokai Forest Reserve, 4 Dec 1995, Guy Nagai s.n. (BISH). Melastomataceae Miconia calvescens DC. New island record, range extensions On 11 October, a student submitted a leaf specimen from the Wailua Houselots area on Kauai to PPC technician A. Vol. 31, December 31,1992 177 Taxonomic Status and Host Range of Three HeteropsyUa spp. (Homoptera: Psyllidae) in Hawaii WALTER T. NAGAMINE, BERNARR R. KUMASH1RO, and LARRY M. NAKAHARA1 ABSTRACT. The laxonomic status of two species of Hftrrvpsytla in Hawaii was clarified after confusion arose because of inadequate identification keys and the collection of mixed popu lations from a common host plant. A third species of llrtrmfisylla was also discovered for the first time in Hawaii (hiring January 1986. Most range tests were conducted with nine leguminous plants, lletemfisylla rubana Crawford, a senior synonym of //. inetia (Sulc), completed its development on leucaena (Ijnuarna UucocephaUt (l.am.) de Wit) and monkeypod (Samanea saman (Jacq.) Mem); //. huasachae Caldwell on koa (Acacia koa Gray), monkeypcxl, and slender mimosa (Desmanlhus virgatus (I.) Willd.); and //. fusca Crawford on klu {Acacia farnesiana (1..) Willcl.). Clarification of the taxonomic status of two HeteropsyUa spp. present in Hawaii was made recently. The close resemblance of the species within this genus, in addition to the collection of mixed populations from a common host plant, led to some early confusion. At that time, the need for revision of the HeteropsyUa group precluded their identifications. Later, with the revision work completed (Brown 1985, Burckhardt 1986, 1987) and with assistance of collaborators R. Brown and I. Hodkinson2, D. Burckhardt3, D. Hollis4, and D. Miller and L. Russell5, the determinations of two HeteropsyUa spp., H. cubana Crawford and H. huasachae Caldwell, were made. A third species, H. fusca Crawford, was later identified by I. Hodkinson, R. Brown, and D. Hollis. A summary of the three psyllids in Hawaii is presented below. -

DOI: 10.21068/c2020.v21n02a01 Heterópteros acuáticos y semiacuáticos asociados al bosque seco del Patía, suroeste de Colombia Aquatic and semiaquatic Heteropterans associated with dry forest in Patía, southwestern Colombia Dora Nancy Padilla Gil Resumen Los ecosistemas secos del Patía, en los Departamentos de Cauca y Nariño, son unos de los más degradados y altamente vulnerables frente al cambio climático en Colombia, y son áreas prioritarias para conservación. Determinamos las especies de heterópteros acuáticos y semiacuáticos, Nepomorpha y Gerromorpha, que habitan en los ecosistemas acuáticos de este bosque seco, basado en la revisión de publicaciones y de la colección de Entomología PSO-CZ. Se registraron 27 especies: Gerromorpha, 21 especies y Nepomorpha, 6 especies. Palabras clave. Nadadores de espalda. Neotrópico. Patinadores. Sudamérica. Abstract The dry forests of the Patía River, in the Departments of Cauca and Nariño, are some of the most degraded and highly vulnerable ecosystems facing climate change in Colombia, and they are considered high priority areas for conservation. We identified aquatic and semiaquatic heteropterans (Nepomorpha and Gerromorpha) that inhabit the aquatic ecosystems in these dry forests, based on literature and on the PSO-CZ Entomological Collection. There were 27 species: Gerromorpha, 21 species and Nepomorpha, 6 species. Key word. Back swimmers. Neotropical Region. South America. water striders. Farnham ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which working-class Kānaka Hawai’i (Hawaiian) immigrants in the nineteenth century repurposed and repackaged precontact Hawai’i strategies of accommodation and resistance in their migration towards North America and particularly within California. The arrival of European naturalists, American missionaries, and foreign merchants in the Hawaiian Islands is frequently attributed for triggering this diaspora. However, little has been written about why Hawaiian immigrants themselves chose to migrate eastward across the Pacific or their reasons for permanent settlement in California. Like the ali’i on the Islands, Hawaiian commoners in the diaspora exercised agency in their accommodation and resistance to Pacific imperialism and colonialism as well. Blending labor history, religious history, and anthropology, this thesis adopts an interdisciplinary and ethnohistorical approach that utilizes Hawaiian-language newspapers, American missionary letters, and oral histories from California’s indigenous peoples. -
