He leads Google’s global teams for legal, government relations, corporate development (M&A and investment projects) and new business development (strategic partnerships and licensing opportunities). David was first introduced to Google in 1998 as a partner in the corporate transactions group at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati, one of the nation’s leading law firms representing technology businesses. He served as Google’s first outside counsel and worked with Larry Page and Sergey Brin to incorporate the company and secure its initial rounds of financing. During his tenure at Wilson Sonsini, David worked with a wide variety of technology companies to help them manage complex transactions such as mergers, acquisitions and initial public offerings. David earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Santa Clara University and his JD from Stanford Law School. Roel Campos: Commissioner Roel C. Campos was first sworn in as a Commissioner of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on August 22, 2002. On June 2, 2005, he was nominated by President George W. Bush for a second term, and was confirmed by the Senate on July 29, 2005. Commissioner Campos has served for four years as the Commission’s liaison to the international regulatory community. He has become an influential voice for the convergence of standards and for rational regulation that promotes cross- border transactions. As the Vice Chair of the Technical Committee of the International Organization of Securities Commissions, he has developed productive relationships with securities regulators in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. He also has extensively participated in the crafting and adoption of all of the SEC’s major regulatory initiatives, including: the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, mutual fund governance and compliance rules, and the new National Market System. In addition, Commissioner Campos has spoken and published extensively in the areas of the implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, corporate governance, director liability, corporate penalties, international accounting and auditing standards, Securities Act reform, SRO and market reform, retirement investment protection, research analyst conflicts, and the internationalization of the securities markets. Prior to being nominated to the Commission, Commissioner Campos was one of two principal owner-executives of El Dorado Communications, a radio broadcasting company, at its headquarters in Houston, Texas. However, he began his career as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. After attending Harvard Law School, he worked in Los Angeles, California for major law firms as a corporate transactions/securities lawyer and litigator. Beginning in 1985, Commissioner Campos served as a federal prosecutor for five years in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles. He successfully prosecuted complex and violent narcotics cartels and, in a celebrated trial, convicted defendants for the kidnapping and murder of a DEA Agent. He also investigated and prosecuted major government contractors for fraudulent conduct. He then returned to private law practice for several years before co-founding El Dorado Communications, Inc. Commissioner Campos has been recognized as one of the top Latino leaders in America. He is a founding member of the New America Alliance, a Latino initiative for raising awareness of investment opportunities in the Latino sector in the United States. Tony West: Named one of Northern California’s top 100 “Super Lawyers” every year since 2006, Tony West is a litigation partner whose trial practice includes representing both individuals and companies in civil and criminal matters. A former federal prosecutor and California special assistant attorney general, Mr. West has been counsel in several high-profile litigation matters in both federal and state court. Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Mr. West served in both the U.S. Department of Justice and the California Department of Justice. Mr. West has served as lead trial counsel in a variety of jury trials. As an Assistant United States Attorney, he led a team of FBI and U.S. Customs agents in the investigation and successful prosecution of one of the nation’s largest Internet child pornography/molestation crime rings. In 2006, Lawdragon chose Mr. West as one of its “New Stars” and The Daily Journal named him one of California’s “Top 20 Lawyers Under 40” in 2004. A frequent public speaker and legal commentator, Mr. West has often appeared as a legal analyst for CNN-Headline News, ESPN, CBS-5, and other media networks on a variety of legal, political, and constitutional issues. Marx Cazanave: Is chairman of Cazenave and Co., Inc., a registered broker/dealer (member of FINRA) and placement agents for alternative asset classes. He was co-founder (with Ed Callan, chairman of Callan Associates) and CEO of Progress Investment Management Company in San Francisco. Progress Investment is a manager of managers, focusing on emerging firms (small, minority, and women- owned). Progress Investment manages assets for some of the largest public and corporate pension funds in the United States. The firm grew the assets to $3 billion in eight years was sold in 1998 to Liberty Financial, a subsidiary of Liberty Mutual Life. The Progress management team and employees bought the firm back in 2005; it currently manages in excess of $6 billion in assets. He also served as an appointee of President Carter as Regional Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA), and as Director of Business Development for the state of California and a Principle Consultant to the State Assembly Office of Research. Mr. Cazenave serves on the advisory board of three California-based asset management firms: Mar Vista Investment Partners, Kline Hawkes & Co., and Lombardia Capital Partners. He also serves on several boards including Making Waves Educational Program in Richmond, CA, the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, the Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos, CA, and volunteers regularly at San Quentin Prison. Mr. Cazenave received his B.A. in political science from California State University, Los Angeles and completed Stanford University's Graduate School of Business Executive Program for Smaller Companies. John Thompson: John W. Thompson is chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Symantec Corporation. Under Thompson’s leadership, Symantec has grown from a small consumer software publisher to a global leader in providing security, storage and systems management solutions. Through a combination of strategic acquisitions, strong technology partnerships and organic development, Symantec has grown to become the fourth largest independent software company. With its broad portfolio of products and services, Symantec helps consumers and enterprise customers secure and manage their information assets. In September 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Thompson to the National Infrastructure Advisory Committee (NIAC), to make recommendations regarding the security of the critical infrastructure of the United States. In addition, Thompson has served as the chair of the Silicon Valley Blue Ribbon Task Force on Aviation Security and Technology to identify and evaluate technology-driven solutions to improve the security and efficiency of national and local aviation.Prior to joining Symantec, Thompson had a distinguished career with the IBM Corporation where he held senior executive positions in sales, marketing and software development. In his last assignment, he was general manager of IBM Americas and a member of the company’s Worldwide Management Council.He serves as a director on the corporate boards of UPS and Seagate Technology. In addition, he serves on the board of Teach for America, an organization dedicated to eliminating educational inequities for all children. He completed his undergraduate studies at Florida A&M University and holds a master’s degree in management science from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Kamala Harris: In January 2008, Kamala D. Harris was sworn into a second term in Office after garnering more than 98 percent of the vote in the first uncontested race for District Attorney of San Francisco since 1991. In December 2003, she was elected as the first woman District Attorney in San Francisco's history, and the first African American woman in California to hold the office. The citywide election against a two-term incumbent was her first run for public office. Kamala was born in Oakland and raised in Berkeley. Her parents, both professors, were active in the Civil Rights Movement and instilled in Kamala a strong commitment to justice and public service. That commitment led Kamala to Howard University, America's oldest black university, and then to Hastings College of the Law. She graduated in 1990. As Deputy District Attorney in Alameda County from 1990 to 1998, Kamala prosecuted hundreds of serious and violent felonies, including homicide, rape and child sexual assault cases. Before Louise Renne recruited her to join the City Attorney's office in August, 2000, Kamala was the Managing Attorney of the Career Criminal Unit of the San Francisco District Attorney's office. Riders, drivers or employees who have been sexually assaulted or discriminated against are free to choose the venue they want to pursue their claims against the company, wrote West, who was a top-ranking official in the Justice Department during the Obama administration and has spoken previously about the pervasiveness of sexual harassment and gender discrimination. “It’s important to give sexual assault and harassment survivors control of how they pursue their claims,” West wrote in the post, noting the company’s need to regain the public’s trust. “Whatever they decide, they will be free to tell their story wherever and however they see fit.” The move comes less than three weeks after 14 women, who said they were sexually assaulted by their Uber drivers, penned an open letter to the company’s board urging it to allow them to pursue justice in an open courtroom, rather than in arbitration. “Silencing our stories deprives customers and potential investors from the knowledge that our horrific experiences are part of a widespread problem at Uber,” the women wrote. “This is not doing the ‘right thing,’” they said, alluding to the company’s new motto: “We do the right thing. On behalf of Ms. Guerrero, we asked DLA Piper co-chairs Roger Meltzer and Jay Rains to release her from forced arbitration so that she can “get [her] day in court.” DLA Piper refused. Although you agreed that DLA Piper should allow sexual assault victims to have their day in court, no other action was taken by you or your husband Douglas Emhoff, a DLA Piper partner. A group of law students from elite schools, including Harvard, did take action. Members of the People’s Parity Project held protests at DLA Piper offices in New York, Boston and Washington D.C. and passed out leaflets urging law students not to interview with DLA Piper until it agreed to cease mandatory arbitration for all lawyers and employees of the firm.
