The visitors responded by making a double substitution and Scarisbrick almost converted a Rylands corner before on 65 minutes Regan was replaced by Davison who had missed the games over the holiday period through injury. Davison saw his pile driver blocked in the area and then on 71 minutes Walker headed off the line a glancing O’Halleron header. There was still plenty left in the game with Charnock still committed to attack and the visitors not accepting defeat. On 73 minutes Oxley replaced Bennett who had put in another decent performance in midfield. Charnock were defending well with Young dominant in the centre and Walker making a real physical presence at the back. A Rylands’ goal on 81 minutes put the Cheshire visitors right back into the match, the home defence struggled to cope with an all-out attack and despite blocking several shots the ball fell conveniently for Wolhunter and he made no mistake giving Ascroft no chance to save. It set the game up for a frantic final 10 minutes but Charnock did not panic and on 85 minutes Grimshaw hit a shot narrowly wide; a goal at this point would definitely have confirmed the three points. However, the visitors struggled to create chances and another fine block, by Walker, of what appeared to be a goalbound shot on 90 minutes ensured that Charnock comfortably saw out the three minutes of added time. The game had been far closer than the final score suggested but Charnock’s neat passing game had been more suitable for the conditions and they had been ruthless in converting their chances. It had been a really excellent display from the team in green.

14 THE OFFICIAL CHARNOCK RICHARD FOOTBALL CLUB PROGRAMME over the bar. Knight was proving to be a real handful on the right until he was withdrawn on 69 minutes. Charnock’s success has been built upon slick neat passing football which is really effective on firm pitches and they really struggled on the pudding-like-surface on this occasion.

Just before Christmas Charnock signed Nickeas from Croston Sports Club and the young lad has not looked out of place in the five games he has played since but he looked like he had run out of energy when he was replaced by Davison on 64 minutes. The 68th minute saw Charnock concede another goal and again it was a result of giving the ball away when trying to play out of defence, McGowan capitalised upon the mistake and flighted a delightful shot over Ascroft’s head into the far corner of the goal.

It was beginning to look as if Charnock were on the way to a really punishing defeat but they rallied and created several threats in the home penalty area without testing the home keeper. Cain had come on for Knight and when the Charnock defensive set up gave him a clear path to goal he cut in from the right and hit a shot past Ascroft into the far corner of the net on 73 minutes. It made the 5-0 scoreline equal to the result that Charnock had suffered in the encounter at Mossie Park. O’Farrell replaced Bennett on 75 minutes. Charnock won a couple of corners and McGowan missed a chance to make it six by scuffing a shot and Ascroft made an easy save. On 85 minutes Oxley replaced Regan. The game finished with Hare shooting wide when well placed and at the other end Darr miscuing when played in on the right.

DAVE ROWLAND SECRETARY’S REPORT

“WE HAVE ENJOYED SOME WONDERFUL FOOTBALL, BEEN TO MANY DIFFERENT VENUES FOR THE FIRST TIME, MET SOME REALLY GREAT PEOPLE AND MADE MANY NEW FRIENDS.”

There had to be some improvement for Charnock in the second half and there was, whilst never consistently producing the football of which they are capable they played well enough to dominate the half. An early Grimshaw effort saw Kurasik conceding a corner and Regan hit a shot narrowly over the bar. A Fairhurst header from a free kick brought a save from Kurasik before Regan headed just over the bar. With Davison now operating on the right and making some decent runs the Villagers were controlling the game. There was a real scare on 66 minutes when Budrys had a clear header from close range but Eastwood got a hand to scoop the ball away; it was a really good save. Immediately Darr should have opened the scoring but with only the goalkeeper to beat he shot straight at him. On 67 minutes Nickeas replaced Davison and rather surprisingly took up a position out on the right with Regan continuing on the left. It was now Charnock who were winning corner after corner and their game had improved considerably on their first half display. The Villagers were finally rewarded for their efforts on 76 minutes, a neat move down the right finished with Nickeas finding DARR and he shot just inside the near post. It was another opportunist goal that we have come to expect from the speedy striker. On 82 minutes Walker replaced Regan as Charnock looked to maintain their lead and then Oxley came on for Darr. Hanley made a spirited attempt to get back into the game but Charnock stood firm. Grimshaw went down and appeared to be held down but the referee decreed that he was the offender and his protests saw him sent to the sin bin in added time.

After a very poor first half Charnock had come back to redeem themselves in the final 45 minutes and win an important three points that saw them remain in third place in the table.
