FA Vase Winners: 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011 WHITLEY BAY FC BW3 Welcome to Hillheads WHITLEY BAY v TOW LAW TOWN STL NORTHERN LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION Tuesday 1st November 2011

Good evening and welcome to Hillheads Park for tonight’s STL Northern League game against Tow Law Town. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all players, officials and supporters of Tow Law and I hope they enjoy their evening with us. The Lawyers have had a very difficult start to the season, struggling near the foot of the table but with players now recovering from injury, they will have been greatly encouraged by their surprise victory over high flying Sunderland RCA on Saturday. Remarkably, that success was their first win on home soil this season and they will doubtless be aiming to upset the odds again tonight, so there can be no room for complacency on our part. Saturday’s hard fought win over Norton & Stockton keeps us in 4th place and victory tonight would see us move up to third in what is proving to be a very competitive First Division this season. As most fans will know, we have been given home draws against new opposition in both the FA Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. Our defence of the Vase begins at home to Tadcaster Albion, who are among the front runners in the Northern Counties East League, while in the Senior Cup, our opponents are Northern League Second Divisi on leaders Team Northumbria. On Saturday we make our first ever visit to newly promoted Newton Aycliffe, who upset the odds with victory at West Auckland on Friday night. We then travel to South Shields on Tuesday in a game rearranged after the floodlight failure at Filtrona Park last month. Our next home game is against Billingham Synthonia on Saturday 12th November.

BW10 A brief history of Whitley Bay Football Club

1970’s The early 1970’s saw Bay’s successes continue with the League Cup being won in 1970/71, and the County Cup in 1970/71 and 1972/73. With the demise of amateur football the Club’s fortunes took a nosedive, culminating in them havin g to apply for re-election to the League in 1979/80. 1980’s In 1987/88, with fortunes rising, the club joined the . In 1989/90 the Bay had their best ever run in the FA Cup, when they reached the 3rd Round, going down 1-0 at Rochdale, after a 1-0 win at then League side Scarborough, and in the 2nd Round defeating former winners Preston North End 2-0 in front of the BBC Match of the Day cameras. 1990’s The following season Whitley won not only the First Division Cup for the second time but also the Championship and promotion to the Premier Division. They finished in 11th spot in the 1993/94 season, their best position in the Premier Division. A decline in fortunes followed during the later 90’s and in 2000 Whitley were relegated back to the Northern League. 2000’s A new century marked the beginning of the most successful period in the club’s history as they rose to national prominence with record breaking achievements in the FA Vase. The 2001/02 season proved to be one of the most memorable in the clubs’ history when in only their second season in the competition and against all expectations they won the FA Vase at Villa Park, thanks to a spectacular Ian Chandler header in extra tim e against their Eastern League opponents Tiptree United.
