He is best known for his starring role as Thomas in the dystopian sci-fi trilogy The Maze Runner and the role of Stiles Stillinsky in MTV's Little Wolf. O'Brien's other work includes starring roles in such films as First Time and American Killer, as well as supporting roles in the films Internship and Deepwater Horizon. Early life O'Brien was born in New York, the son of Lisa (nee Rhodes), a former actress who also ran acting school, and Patrick O'Brien, a cameraman. He grew up in Springfield Township, New Jersey, until he was twelve years old when he and his family moved to Hermosa Beach, California. His father is of Irish descent and his mother of Italian, English and Spanish descent. After graduating from Mira Costa High School in 2009, he confers to engage in sports broadcasting and possibly work for the New York Mets. At the age of 14, O'Brien began posting original videos on his YouTube channel. With the video developing, a local producer and director approached him about doing the work for a web series while in his senior year of high school. While working on the web series, O'Brien met the actor, who connected him with the manager. He had planned to enter Syracuse University as a sports broadcasting major, but instead decided to pursue an acting career. Prior to his acting career, O'Brien produced, directed and starred in a number of comedy short films, which he released through his personal youTube channel. He was also the drummer for the independent rock band Slow Kids at Play. He auditioned several before becoming one of the co-stars in MTV's Teen Wolf, a series based on the same 1985 film. He was supposed to play Scott, but after reading the script, O'Brien wanted to audition for part of Stiles instead. After four auditions, he was cast. In 2010, he began playing Stiles in the series. In 2011, O'Brien was introduced to the audience in the fully improvised independent comedy film High Road. The following year he starred alongside Britt Robertson in the romantic comedy The First Time. In 2013, O'Brien starred in the comedy film Internship. That same year, O'Brien directed The Maze Runner, which began filming in the summer of 2013, when he was on a break from the film Teenage Wolf. He played Thomas, starring. Yahoo! Films named O'Brien as one of the 15 Breakout Stars to watch in 2014. In 2016, he starred in the thriller thriller Deepwater Horizon, based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion. He starred in American Killer in 2017, an action movie in which he played the titular character Mitch Rapp, and voiced the main character of CGI in the spin-off of the film Bumblebee in 2018. In 2019, O'Brien starred in the comedy sci-fi anthology Weird City. Upcoming releases include the title role in the mystical thriller Fredrik Fitzella's Education, shot in 2018, and the post-apocalyptic film Love and Monsters, in which he will star alongside Michael Rucker and Ariana Greenblatt.
