NEOPLATONIZING GNOSTICISM AND GNOSTICIZING NEOPLATONISM IN THE “AMERICAN BAROQUE” Jay Bregman Hilary Armstrong gave the Gnostics a fair hearing in his “Dualism: Platonic, Gnostic, and Christian.”1 He basically viewed Gnosticism as having some points of contact with Platonism, but since they were not doing the same thing as philosophers, he reasoned, it would be wrong to treat them as “bad philosophers.” Although Gnostic anti-cosmism is balanced by his nuanced view of certain Gnostic pro-cosmic ideas, Gnostics are “mythicizers,” hence doing something very different from philosophers since, in the last analysis, they think that the cosmos is at best transitory—a place to flee from. However, in the last decade or so, there has been a reconsideration of Armstrong’s view. Led especially by John Turner and others, scholars have affirmed that Gnostics, Middle Platonists, and Neoplatonists indeed have more in common philosophically than had been previously supposed; Gnos- tics were perhaps even writing commentaries on Plato’s dialogues in order to gain a respectable hearing in Plotinus’ seminars.2 Nineteenth-century America was the scene of an earlier engagement with Gnosticism, through which heterodox thinkers paved the way for its current serious reception. I will trace the roots and anticipations of contem- porary discussions, in the Neoplatonic, late Transcendentalist journal, The Platonist, and other North American sources. Metaphysical thinkers of the later American Renaissance painted their religious symbols on a Neoplatonic canvas. A secularizing world had given rise to notions of a universal syncretistic cosmic Theism, which welcomed the “esoteric” strains of all traditions. Alexander Wilder, M.D., a regular con- tributor to The Platonist, also cast a wide syncretistic net: the Neoplatonists taught Platonic philosophy in the form of a religion embracing some of the characteristic features of Jainism, the Sankhya and Pythagorean schools (hē gnōsis tōn ontōn). -

Abstract In my article I seek to uncover the spiritual content underlying the 2015 slasher film, Headless. The film in question portrays a psychotic serial killer who beheads his female victims. Working through the disturbing content, I seek to unpack an “atheology”, to use Georges Bataille’s expression and argue that we must see beyond the graphic violence to understand the spirituality of the slasher film. Adapting Cleanth Brooks’ approach to poetics, I take the film itself as the object of my aesthetic study, as distinct from its broader environment. Objects are self-sufficient realities whose autonomy must be respected. Rudolf Otto’s notion of the “numinous” may be of some help in regard to outlining “beheaded” spirituality as it appears in Headless. Violence unveils the flesh, leading to unspeakable revelations that can only be transmitted through darkness and silence. For Otto, experience of the numinous cannot be put into words. Incommunicability pervades Headless, not only because of the unspeakable crimes perpetrated by the killer, but also because of his own muteness. When confronted with the numinous, we are rendered numb by the awe of this vision. -
Understanding and Teaching Rudolph Otto's the Idea of the Holy
CHAPTER EIGHT UNDERSTANDING AND TEACHING RUDOLPH OTTO'S THE IDEA OF THE HOLY "These words were chosen that that which could not be comprehended might yet in some measure be understood." -Hugh of St. Victor (Cited by Otto in the The Idea of the Holy) Rudolph Otto's book on the holy is both simple and complex: simple in pre senting a single, compelling definition of religion's meaning; complex in for mulating concepts that explain religion's origins and development. 1 Students who do not appreciate Otto's complexity run the risk of oversimplify the idea of the holy, rendering it a discrete religious object which can be experienced directly in the way the sun's light is experienced on hot summer days. This essay is devoted to a clarification of what is simple and what complex in Otto's account of the holy. Otto's descriptive account of the unique experience of religious feeling as mysterium tremendum etfascinans, is the simpler, more vivid, and perhaps more convincing part of his book. The complexity begins when Otto moves from a description of religious feeling to an analysis of the idea of the holy, the origins and essence of religion, and finally of religion's historical devel opment and fulfillment. This account which mixes phenomenology, episte mology, and theology in bewieldering amounts, seems at times to confuse rather than to clarify the nature of religious feeling. Yet it is a necessary part of Otto' account of religion, as we shall see. However complex Otto's argument is about religion his genius as a writer was to give his readers the confidence that religious experience has a unique content and a distinct meaning. -

Cormier University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta, Canada This paper reviews the nosological systems in the field of psychology, comparing the classic medical model with a developmental approach to psychopathology and wellbeing. The argument is made that a developmental model offers greater refinement for distinguishing phenomenologically similar experiential states. Due to their substantial overt resemblance, a contrast between spiritual emergencies and pathological psychotic reactions is presented as an example. -

The Psychological Perspective on Religious Experience
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE PROFESSOR MICHAEL ARGYLE It might be expected that those concerned with psychology and religion would have a lot in common: both are concerned with understanding human life and finding how to live it better. However, it turns out that each side knows very little about the other, and what they think they know is often wrong. Some kinds of psychology in the past have been definitely anti-religious, as in the case of ‘behaviourism', which is now extinct since all psychologists now recognise the importance of cognitive processes and even consciousness. There is also the fear that psychology will try to explain religion away in entirely human terms. Part of the way out of this problem is to adopt a non-ontological approach – that is, to study religious experiences and beliefs as empirical phenomena regardless of whether they are true or valid. This is the approach taken in the study of political behaviour. However, it may be that religion is more closely related to human nature, and that knowledge of religious phenomena may be relevant to our decisions about their value. The “argument from religious experience” may look different in the light of detailed research on religious experience. SURVEYS OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE William James (1902), in one of the best-known early studies in the field, investigated intense experiences of a number of exceptional individuals “in their solitude”. Later work sampled the whole population, and was not confined to solitary experiences. Alister Hardy adopted a non-ontological approach, in seeking to collect and classify Religious Experiences as if they were specimens of plants or animals.
