INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH VOLUME 3, ISSUE 6, JUNE 2014 ISSN 2277-8616 Development of Earth Station Receiving Antenna and Digital Filter Design Analysis for C-Band VSAT Su Mon Aye, Zaw Min Naing, Chaw Myat New, Hla Myo Tun Abstract: This paper describes the performance improvement of C-band VSAT receiving antenna. In this work, the gain and efficiency of C-band VSAT have been evaluated and then the reflector design is developed with the help of ICARA and MATLAB environment. The proposed design meets the good result of antenna gain and efficiency. The typical gain of prime focus parabolic reflector antenna is 30 dB to 40dB. And the efficiency is 60% to 80% with the good antenna design. By comparing with the typical values, the proposed C-band VSAT antenna design is well optimized with gain of 38dB and efficiency of 78%. In this paper, the better design with compromise gain performance of VSAT receiving parabolic antenna using ICARA software tool and the calculation of C-band downlink path loss is also described. The particular prime focus parabolic reflector antenna is applied for this application and gain of antenna, radiation pattern with far field, near field and the optimized antenna efficiency is also developed. The objective of this paper is to design the downlink receiving antenna of VSAT satellite ground segment with excellent gain and overall antenna efficiency. The filter design analysis is base on Kaiser window method and the simulation results are also presented in this paper. The baluns are the key components in balanced circuits such balanced mixers, frequency multipliers, push–pull amplifiers, and antennas. Most of these applications have become more integrated which demands the baluns to be in compact size and low cost. In this thesis, a new approach about the design of planar balun is presented where the 4-port symmetrical network with one port terminated by open circuit is first analyzed by using even- and odd-mode excitations. With full design equations, the proposed balun presents perfect balanced output and good input matching and the measurement results make a good agreement with the simulations. Second, Yagi-Uda antenna is also introduced as an entry to fully understand the quasi-Yagi antenna. Both of the antennas have the same design requirements and present the radiation properties. The arrangement of the antenna’s elements and the end-fire radiation property of the antenna have been presented. Finally, the quasi-Yagi antenna is used as an application of the balun where the proposed balun is employed to feed a quasi-Yagi antenna. -

External Link: MIT OCW 8.03 Lecture 11 Fourier Analysis Video Recap: Fourier Transform The tool which converts a spatial (real space) description of audio/image data into one in terms of its frequency components is called the Fourier transform. The new version is usually referred to as the Fourier space description of the data. We then essentially process the data: E.g . for filtering basically this means attenuating or setting certain frequencies to zero We then need to convert data back to real audio/imagery to use in our applications. The corresponding inverse transformation which turns a Fourier space description back into a real space one is called the inverse Fourier transform. What do Frequencies Mean in an Image? Large values at high frequency components mean the data is changing rapidly on a short distance scale. E.g .: a page of small font text, brick wall, vegetation. Large low frequency components then the large scale features of the picture are more important. E.g . a single fairly simple object which occupies most of the image. The Road to Compression How do we achieve compression? Low pass filter — ignore high frequency noise components Only store lower frequency components High pass filter — spot gradual changes If changes are too low/slow — eye does not respond so ignore? ECE 255, MOSFET Basic Configurations 8 March 2018 In this lecture, we will go back to Section 7.3, and the basic configurations of MOSFET amplifiers will be studied similar to that of BJT. Previously, it has been shown that with the transistor DC biased at the appropriate point (Q point or operating point), linear relations can be derived between the small voltage signal and current signal. We will continue this analysis with MOSFETs, starting with the common-source amplifier. 1 Common-Source (CS) Amplifier The common-source (CS) amplifier for MOSFET is the analogue of the common- emitter amplifier for BJT. Its popularity arises from its high gain, and that by cascading a number of them, larger amplification of the signal can be achieved. 1.1 Chararacteristic Parameters of the CS Amplifier Figure 1(a) shows the small-signal model for the common-source amplifier. Here, RD is considered part of the amplifier and is the resistance that one measures between the drain and the ground. The small-signal model can be replaced by its hybrid-π model as shown in Figure 1(b). Then the current induced in the output port is i = −gmvgs as indicated by the current source. Antenna Theory and Matching Farrukh Inam Applications Engineer LPRF TI 1 Agenda • Antenna Basics • Antenna Parameters • Radio Range and Communication Link • Antenna Matching Example 2 What is an Antenna • Converts guided EM waves from a transmission line to spherical wave in free space or vice versa. • Matches the transmission line impedance to that of free space for maximum radiated power. • An important design consideration is matching the antenna to the transmission line (TL) and the RF source. The quality of match is specified in terms of VSWR or S11. • Standing waves are produced when RF power is not completely delivered to the antenna. In high power RF systems this might even cause arching or discharge in the transmission lines. • Resistive/dielectric losses are also undesirable as they decrease the efficiency of the antenna. 3 When does radiation occur • EM radiation occurs when charge is accelerated or decelerated (time-varying current element). • Stationary charge means zero current ⇒ no radiation. • If charge is moving with a uniform velocity ⇒ no radiation. • If charge is accelerated due to EMF or due to discontinuities, such as termination, bend, curvature ⇒ radiation occurs. 4 Commonly Used Antennas • PCB antennas – No extra cost – Size can be demanding at sub 433 MHz (but we have a good solution!) – Good performance at > 868 MHz • Whip antennas – Expensive solutions for high volume – Good performance – Hard to fit in many applications • Chip antennas – Medium cost – Good performance at 2.4 GHz – OK performance at 868-955 -

Transistor Basics
Transistor Basics: Collector The schematic representation of a transistor is shown to the left. Note the arrow pointing down towards the emitter. This signifies it's an NPN transistor (current flows in the direction of the arrow). See the Q1 datasheet at: www.fairchildsemi.com. Base 2N3904 A transistor is basically a current amplifier. Say we let 1mA flow into the base. We may get 100mA flowing into the collector. Note: The Emitter currents flowing into the base and collector exit through the emitter (the sum off all currents entering or leaving a node must equal zero). The gain of the transistor will be listed in the datasheet as either βDC or Hfe. The gain won't be identical even in transistors with the same part number. The gain also varies with the collector current and temperature. Because of this we will add a safety margin to all our base current calculations (i.e. if we think we need 2mA to turn on the switch we'll use 4mA just to make sure). Sample circuit and calculations (NPN transistor): Let's say we want to heat a block of metal. One way to do that is to connect a power resistor to the block and run current through the resistor. The resistor heats up and transfers some of the heat to the block of metal. We will use a transistor as a switch to control when the resistor is heating up and when it's cooling off (i.e. no current flowing in the resistor). In the circuit below R1 is the power resistor that is connected to the object to be heated.
