Stardom in Contemporary Bollywood H-Film Stardom in Contemporary Bollywood Discussion published by Aysha Iqbal on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 Stardom in Contemporary Bollywood: An edited anthology Editors: Aysha Iqbal Viswamohan (Dept of Humanities & Social Sciences, IIT Madras, India) [email protected] Clare Wilkinson (Dept of Anthropology, Washington State University, Vancouver, US) [email protected] Popular Hindi films stars are a vast but still largely untapped area of academic interest. Within film studies, a number of articles and book chapters have probed the significance of stars as compelling personas, industry assets and bellwethers of larger social trends. As yet, though, there is no volume or collection that brings together a set of reflections on stars and stardom in one forum. This edited volume fills this gap with a sustained and diverse consideration of the phenomenon of stardom in contemporary Bollywood. We believe that this is a particularly opportune moment to add to existing literature by taking a critical, in-depth look at stars individually and as a cohort. With the rise of social media and the intensified engagement of India in the global economy, stars in India are forging their identities not just through their on-screen images, and magazine and advertising appearances, but also through an intensified array of media platforms, product endorsements, and involvement in social causes. Theoretical contributions on western stars and their reception have relevance for Indian stars, but the conditions of the construction of stardom in India do not fully overlap with those in Hollywood. Stardom, in other words, is inseparable from fundamental shifts in India's media and culture. This book will offer the reader a theoretical analysis of stars and situate star making in a dynamic global context. At the current stage of development of the project we are still looking for contributions on the following stars: 1. Aishwarya Rai 2. Aamir Khan 3. Ajay Devgan 4. Akshay Kumar 5. Anushka Sharma 6. Deepika Padukone Citation: Aysha Iqbal. Stardom in Contemporary Bollywood. ABSTRACT The Bollywood film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (hereinafter ‘ZNMD’), translated into Spanish as Solo se vive una vez, was a box office success in the summer of 2011 in India. Directed by the young filmmaker Zoya Akhtar and funded by Turespaña, ZNMD was conceived as a perfect marketing product at transnational level, in which Spain becomes the venue chosen by three young people who decide to celebrate the bachelor party of one of them, by visiting some touris- tic towns and villages of the country. The film raises interesting topics on the ascending upper middle class in India which seeks to harmonize a new consumerist way of life with a more tra- ditional lifestyle linked to their parent’s generation, and it is a clear example of an increasingly globalized cultural industry with more economic weight inside and outside India.

August 2010 In a joint effort, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Berlin Tourismus Marketing (BTM), Berlin Partner and Berlin airports have managed to bring one of the most important Bollywood productions to the German capital. Shah Rukh Khan revealed back in February at the Berlinale film festival that he would like to shoot his next film in Berlin. After an intensive search for locations assisted by the Berlin Brandenburg Film Commission (bbfc), the producers of Excel Entertainment from India have now decided that the sequel of the action film “Don”, one of the most successful Indian blockbusters, should be shot in the German capital. Filming is scheduled to begin in the late autumn. The shooting of “Don 2” is expected to take place over 50 days at well-known locations around the city under the direction of Farhan Akhtar, with Berlin seeing off some fierce international competition. Burkhard Kieker, CEO of BTM said, “We have been promoting this idea for more than four years. It’s incredible that it will actually be realized now. This could be the breakthrough needed for making the Berlin destination known to the Indian market. It's exactly what we want.” René Gurka, Managing Director of Berlin Partner added, “A Bollywood blockbuster set in Berlin will offer a tremendous boost in terms of the image of our city in India as a place in which to live and work and, in particular, it will open up new opportunities in Asia for the Berlin media industry.” Managing Director of Medienboard, Kirsten Niehuus said, “After Til Schweiger, Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz, we are very much looking forward to welcoming Shah Rukh Khan to Berlin on the set of his new film in the late autumn.

The primary objective of the paper is to study the three 12 selected movies of Aamir Khan which tend to set the agenda of mainstream Hindi 13 cinema. The present paper is an attempt to study three different movies of Aamir Khan 14 which is inclined to pave the way to set the agenda in accordance with the messages 15 hidden in the themes and plots of these movies under study. The researcher has 16 purposefully selected these movies as Sarfarosh – a suspense-thriller movie, Dil 17 Chahta Hai – a trendsetter movie, and Mangal Pandey – a historical movie, owing to 18 their heterogeneous and multifarious stories. In broader terms, this lecture course also furnishes an introduction to the culture and history of modern Hindi-language cinema, the study of modern Indian history, some of the broader theoretical literature on nationalism and patriotism, and the study of popular culture. The use of films and visual material in the study of history has become increasingly popular over the course of the last three decades; however, this course does not view cinema merely an as instrument for the study of Indian history. Popular cinema, this lecture presumes, is an intrinsically interesting subject of inquiry, even if Indian scholars have come to this realization long after the Indian public had already declared its unmitigated affection for the movies.
