2021 University of Colorado Sustainability Report University of Colorado Sustainability Report Letter from President Kennedy Having grown up amid Minnesota’s magnificent lakes and now living with a view of Colorado’s majestic mountains, I’ve had the good fortune to experience some of this nation’s most beautiful regions. Anyone who has had similar opportunities understands the importance of paying them forward by preserving the beauty and integrity of our lands. At the University of Colorado, we believe this is our collective responsibility, and it’s one we take to heart as this Sustainability Report helps illustrate. CU has a longstanding commitment to fostering sustainability system- wide as well as leading the state in such efforts. More than a decade ago, the CU Board of Regents passed a Sustainability Resolution directing the university president and chancellors to incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards in construction projects wherever possible; develop comprehensive plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and incorporate the mandates of the Governor’s Climate Action Plan into each campus’ efforts to attain climate neutrality. As this report outlines, we continue to surpass these goals, but we I APPLAUD THE cannot afford to become complacent. Football was a big event in Salida during these early years. In 1909 the school paper, the Tenderfoot, reported, “The town was football mad on Saturday afternoon when the Salida High School football team lined up against a strong aggregation of University and Denver High School men, representing the Barnes’ Commercial School of Denver. The game was played November 6, 1909. The final score was 0 - 0.” Another published report read, “The final score was 0 - 0, in favor of Salida.” The report indicated that most of the game was played in Denver’s territory. The article went on to describe how Salida played “old style” football and Denver played “new style” football depending mostly on the forward pass. Prior to 1910, Salida home games were played on dirt fields located where the current Andreas Field House is now. Early athletes traveled by train to the San Luis Valley, Gunnison, Leadville and to other towns on the eastern slope.

Mascot/Nickname
mascot/nickname The University of Colorado has one of the more unique mascots in all of intercollegiate athletics, a real buffalo named Ralphie. The live buffalo mascot leads the football team out on the field both at the start of the game and second half. It is truly one of the special sights that exist anywhere in college or professional sports, especially for opposing teams, who often stop in their tracks watching the massive buffalo round the end zone and head directly at their sideline. The buffalo first appeared in 1934, three weeks after a contest to select an official school nickname by the Silver & Gold newspaper had come to an end and “Buffaloes” was the winning entry. For the final game of the ‘34 season, a group of students paid $25 to rent a buffalo calf along with a real cowboy as his keeper. The calf was the son of Killer, a famed bison at Trails End Ranch in Fort Collins. It took the Today cowboy and four students to keep the calf under control on the sidelines, a 7-0 win at the University of Denver on Thanksgiving Day. Prior to 1934, CU athletic teams usually were referred to as the “Silver and Gold,” but other nicknames teams were sometimes called included Silver Helmets, Yellow Jackets, Hornets, Arapahoes, Big Horns, Grizzlies and Frontiersmen. The student newspaper decided to sponsor a national contest in the summer of 1934, with a $5 prize to go to the author of the winning selection. Entries, over 1,000 in all, arrived rally, as supporter Mahlon White donated him to the school, and it was from almost every state in the union.
