3 Distressed times and areas: poverty, polarisation and politics in England, 1918–1971 DANNY DORLING Introduction It is now commonly understood that for most of the first half of the twentieth century England (and Wales) was socially divided along simple geographical lines to a degree that has not quite recurred since and to a degree that had not occurred so starkly before. The truth of this statement lies in the meaning of the terms. By socially divided I mean the variation in people’s life chances. These chances range from a person’s chance of being ill and dying, to finding work, to the kind of work they do. It does not take a great leap of imagination to assume that if such fundamental chances as these were strongly polarised then much else that is much harder to measure was also starkly polarised during most of this period – ranging, for example, from the distribution of wealth, to opportunities for recreation and education. By ‘along simple geographical lines’ I mean very simple – in fact involving simply one line: the line that divided the North from the South. There have always been geographical divides – between streets within cities, between town and country and so forth – but I would argue that there has not been, at least since this period, such a simple line to be drawn across the map of England. The North–South divide is still very much apparent today, but it is now more an echo, and perhaps largely a product of the divide which grew so great in these years. -

British architect Cedric Price has been one of the most challenging and witty provocateurs in the field, forcing us to look with a fresh eye at what architecture is and suggesting radical ideas of what it might be. Price’s work proposes a dynamic approach to architecture. Arguing that “movement is implicit, together with change, in the surrounding conditions,” Price stands against the production of permanent, specific spaces for particular functions, stressing the unpredictability of future use and the need for adaptability. He asks us to think about a built environment that anticipates unexpected social needs rather than accommodating those we think we know, that relishes the possibilities for re-use and obsolescence, and that explores the ways space can be constructed to participate in movement. At the same time, he is convinced that there are ways of gauging and responding to the apparent unpredictability of time and movement: “The speed of a total life span can be measured”, he adds. “The fourth dimension can thus be introduced to design. -

FACULTY READING LIST AND LIST OF CORE AND SURVEY LECTURES Between 1880 and the beginning of the twenty-first century, the United Kingdom became a full political democracy based on universal suffrage, and witnessed major party-political realignments as well as the rise of social rights, identity politics and new non-governmental movements. The UK also experienced civil war (in Ireland, 1916-1923 and in Northern Ireland from 1972 to 1998), total war (in 1914-18 and 1939-45), and the loss of a global empire. Throughout the period there was a vigorous debate on the role of the state and the freedom of the markets in a globalized and deeply unequal economic system. This 1 2 was accompanied by struggles over what it meant to be a citizen of the United Kingdom and who had the right to belong. All had profound political consequences, although these have not always been immediately obvious. The party system and much of the constitution remains in place, parliamentary democracy has survived the challenges of Fascism and Communism apparently unscathed, and politicians have spent much of the past hundred years congratulating themselves on the country’s remarkable capacity to ‘return to normal’ in the aftermath of major crises. Many recent or on-going political controversies, such as devolution, the future of the House of Lords, or Britain’s relationship with Europe have obvious parallels with late Victorian debates. -

1 Sarah Sharp Exporting ‘The Cotter’s Saturday Night’: Robert Burns, Scottish Romantic Nationalism and Colonial Settler Identity Abstract: A Scottish literary icon of the nineteenth century, Burns’s ‘The Cotter’s Saturday Night’ was a key component of the cultural baggage carried by emigrant Scots seeking a new life abroad. The myth of the thrifty, humble and pious Scottish cottager is a recurrent figure in Scottish colonial writing whether that cottage is situated in the South African veld or the Otago bush. This article examines the way in which Burns’s cotter informed the myth of the self-sufficient Scottish peasant in the poetry of John Barr and Thomas Pringle. It will argue that, just as ‘The Cotter’ could be used to reinforce a particular set of ideas about Scottish identity at home, Scottish settlers used Burns’s poem to respond to and cement new identities abroad. In 1787, reviewer John Logan commented of Robert Burns’s Kilmarnock edition that ‘“The Cotter’s Saturday Night” is, without exception, the best poem in the collection’.1 His opinion was echoed by many contemporary and subsequent reviewers. In 1812 George Gleig was able to confidently assert that ‘The “Saturday Night” is indeed universally felt as the most interesting of all the author’s poems’ (Bold, 217). This view of Burns’s poem of common life has not endured. The image of Scotland presented in the poem has become at best a stereotype and at worst a source of cultural cringe. -
Mass Observation (1937-2017) and Life Writing: an Introduction
THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF LIFE WRITING VOLUME X (2021) MO1–MO15 Mass Observation (1937-2017) and Life Writing: an Introduction T. G. Ashplant King's College London Abstract Mass Observation (MO) was formed in Britain in 1937 as an innovative research project, to develop new methods for accurately gauging public opinion, thereby contributing to a more democratic form of politics and public policy formation. The archive of its first phase (1937-49) was transferred to the University of Sussex in 1970. In 1981 it was revived as the Mass Observation Project (MOP), which continues to the present. The documentation which MO and MOP together generated includes a significant body of life writings. The purpose of this cluster of articles is to introduce the ways in which the interaction between the aims and approaches of MO's founders and its later MOP refounders, and the responses of its contributors, produced specific forms of life writing; and to explore aspects of the 'afterlife' of these texts – their contextualisation, publication, and interpretation. This introduction situates the original, multifaceted and idiosyncratic, MO project within wider political and cultural trends of the 1930s, and then examines MO's methods, which aimed at 'the observation by everyone of everyone, including themselves'. Donald Westing Moral Sentiment from Adam Smith to Robert Bums Reconstructing from the 199Os, I shall attempt to think back from the 1780s to attach Robert Bums's moral premises to a line of Scottish Enlightenment phi losophy. I say attach to and not derive from, because along the way I will argue that in the famous Kilmarnock volume (Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, 1786) Bums wrenches and exceeds the Francis Hutcheson-David Hume-Adam Smith philosophy of approbation, or judgment of the propriety of passions, where the moral agent is seen by the eyes of the community. After 1789 and the events in France, Bums enters the insurrectionary politics of a new era, though more obliquely and hesitatingly than the unknown William Blake and the infamous Thomas Paine. Now, say in 1795 when Bums versifies Paine in 'The rank is but the guinea's stamp, / The Man's the gowd for a' that,"} he is more concerned with exposing the inequities of rank in his Scottish community than with defin ing-also aggressively defying-a reputation as a man of correct and modest virtue. -

I thought that Wodrow and Mather, Boston and Glasgow, Massachusetts and Scotland all might be usefully com• pared to shed light on the origins and differences of two quite dissimilar enlightenments emerging in what John Clive and Bernard Bailyn in 1954 described as 'England's cultural provinces/1 As I worked on this essay, I realized that what I was doing was mainly setting out my reasons for believing Clive and Bailyn were wrong.
