Minor Records Appendix 3 Appendix 3: Additional Information on First World War Deaths Most death entries in the service returns for the Great War give the place of birth as Scotland. You can find out where in Scotland a soldier was born by consulting the official printed lists ‘Soldiers died in the great War, 1914-19’. This eight-volume work is also part of the Minor Record series (our reference MIN137 to MIN144) and is available as index-linked digital images. The information below was created to help identify the correct volume and part when they were available on microfiche. 1. Note the regiment and battalion. This information is given at the top of the page on which the death is recorded in the service returns, for example,. Second Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. 2. Check the list below to find the volume and part number of the regiment – the Scottish regiments are shown in bold type. Some of the Scottish regiments are on more than one fiche and the list gives details of the battalions covered on each, for example. The Second Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders can be found in volume 143, part 65, fiche 1. 3. The regiments are broken down into battalions which are not always in numerical sequence. Within each battalion soldiers are listed alphabetically by surname. ‘Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-1919’ – List of Regiments Vol Part 138 1 Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line (including
