LACROSSE RULES

Each player is responsible for presenting a current UNC ONE CARD or valid government issued ID at game time.

FLOOR/FIELD

The game shall be played on a surface the size on two enclosed basketball courts.

GENERAL RULES

All players must show a valid UNC-One Card or valid government issued ID deemed appropriate by the intramural supervisor in order to play.

Each team is permitted to have two Ringers on the team.

THE GAME

Single Sex: The game shall be played between two (2) teams of six (6) players each, including a goalie. A team must have five (5) players to start and finish a game, unless an injury occurs. A team cannot continue with less than four (4) players.

• ** A team with only four (4) players present results in a Default. • ** A team with only three (3) or less players present results in a Forfeit.

Co-Rec: The game shall be played between (2) teams of (6) players each. For a team consisting of (6) players, (3) men and (3) women are required. For a team consisting of (5) players, (3) men and (2) women or (3) women and (2) men are required.

• ** A team with only four (4) players present results in a Default. • ** A team with only three (3) or less players present results in a Forfeit.

THE PLAYING AREA

FLOOR/ FIELD MARKINGS:

1. The floor should be marked with: a. face-off point at the center of the court/field b. Two goal crease areas. 2. The playing field includes all fences around the court, as is such, if the ball becomes unplayable or deflects off an object not part of the court, the ball will be dropped in a face-off 3. The goal line shall be (6) feet from the end wall.

Goal Area: The goal crease should be (4) feet wide and (3) feet deep, and should be marked by a two- inch line.

GAME EQUIPMENT

• The Ball: A soft rubber ball will be used.

• Goalie Equipment: The goalie must a goal mask or protective eye wear. All other non Intramural equipment must be approved by the Sport Programs Supervisor. Goalie pads are not allowed. • Player Equipment: Jersey: Players of opposing teams must wear contrasting colored jerseys, without pockets, numbered on the front or rear. All players must use sticks provided by Intramural Sports. • Illegal Equipment: Baseball hats, jewelry, goal pads, personal lacrosse sticks, lacrosse gloves

PERIODS, TIME FACTORS AND SUBSTITUTIONS

SECTION 1: TIMING OF THE GAME

Article 1: Playing time shall consist of two periods of fifteen (15) minutes each. The clock will be stopped only for injuries time –out (team or official’s). Otherwise, it will be a continuously running clock.

Article 2: Intermission will be (3) minute between periods.

Article 3: Each team will be granted a one (1) minute time-out per game, one minute in duration. A team may call a time-out while in possession of the ball, or at a stoppage of play.

SECTION 2: TIE GAME (PLAYOFFS ONLY)

Article 1: Coin Toss: In case of a game-ending in a tie score, the officials shall bring the two captains to the center of the floor. They will discuss tie breaker procedures and will answer all questions prior to the overtime period.

Article 2: Overtime Procedures: Any game ending in a tie during tournament play will result in a three (3) minute running clock sudden death period. If the score is still tied after the first golden goal period there will be a second golden goal period where it is one verse one plus a goalie for each team and the first team to score wins.

PLAYING THE GAME

SECTION 1: STARTING PLAY

Article 1: Playing Captains: Each coach shall designate to the the team captain or captains. If more than one player is designated, a speaking captain must be selected to make all decisions.

Article 2: Coin Toss: The referee will toss a coin at the beginning of the game to determine choice of side. The teams will switch sides after each period. The game will start with a center zone face-off.

Article 3: Putting the ball in Play: Every time the whistle is blown, the ball is put into play in one of two ways, a face-off or a free shot.

A. Face-offs occur when: a. A period is to start b. A goal is scored c. The ball is trapped between opposing (2) players B. Free – shots occur when a. The ball leaves the playing surface

b. The ball is caught up in the back part of the netting of the goal. c. A net is dislodged d. An injury occurs

Face-offs may take place at the center zone area.

 The ball will start on the ground; a player from each team will put the back of the head of their sticks against each other’s with the ball in between and the remainder of the stick parallel to the ground  Upon the referee blowing the whistle, the players will try to push the ball into their half of the field. The ball cannot be covered and pulled away. All other players must be outside the center zone and in their own halves o –Violation touching the ball during faceoff before the whistle. Ball will be awarded to the offended team in the center zone.  Body contact will not be permitted during the face-off and will result in the ball being awarded to the opposing team’s goalie

The free shots are taken from the closest free shot dot on the floor. Any player from the opposing team may take the free shot. Players may pass or shoot the ball. All other players must be at least (10) feet away from the shooter who shall have (5) seconds to play the ball after the referee’s whistle.

If a player plays the ball before the whistle, or delays longer than the (5) seconds allowed, it is a turnover and the other team will get a free shot from the same spot.

SECTION 2: PLAYING THE BALL

Offside: There are no offside, except during a face-off.

No player may hold the ball for more than five (5) seconds

Feet and hands may NOT be used to control the ball. Purposefully stopping the ball, stepping on the ball, redirecting the ball, passing the ball to a teammate, or attempting to score using one’s feet or hands is not allowed and will result in a turnover of possession to the opposing team.

The ball is not to be covered in order to control possession. Covering the ball will result in a turnover of possession to the opposing team.

Playing the Body: Players must play the ball at all times. Any player checking another player will be penalized.

GOALIE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

SECTION 1: RIGHTS

Designating a Goalie: The player designated as the goalie, is the only player allowed to use the designated Goalie Stick. They may use any part of their body to stop the ball, but must clear the ball to another player using their stick.

 The goalie has ten (10) seconds to clear the ball after making a save.  Once the goalie leaves the crease with possession of the ball, he/she is not allowed to go back into the crease until after clearing the ball.

 Once the goalie leaves the crease they may not advance he/she may not advance the ball beyond mid court.

Dislodged Net: On the case that the net becomes dislodged, but is not involved in the ensuing play, the referee shall allow play to continue and will replace the net. If it is dislodged and is in the play, the referee shall blow the play dead and a free shot will restart play at the nearest dot. An intentionally dislodged net will result in a penalty, or a penalty shot. A referee may award a goal if the shot was headed into the net when the net was dislodged. This is the referee’s judgment call, which can’t be protested by the players.

SCORING

SECTION 1: POINTS

Goal Awarded: Men & Women: All goals shall be worth (1) point. A goal is scored when the puck completely crosses the goal line before time expires.

Goal Awarded: Co-Rec: All goals scored by males will be worth (1) point. All goals scored by females will be worth (1) point.

Mercy Rule: If a team is ahead by (7) goals or more goals with (5) minutes to play in the game, the game will be called, and the team leading will be declared the winner.

FOULS & PENALTIES

SECTION 1: VIOLATIONS

1. This is a NON-CONTACT/ NON-CHECKING league. The minimum penalty for checking or intentional contact will be a one (1) minute penalty. Some incidental contact may be allowed at the referee’s discretion. 2. Crease Violation: no offensive player may enter the crease. If this occurs the defensive team will receive the ball behind their goal. One (1) defensive player may run through the crease to retrieve the ball, BUT the goalie must step outside of the crease before the defensive player enters. Only one (1) defensive player, including the goalie, is permitted inside the goal crease. 3. One (1) minute penalties - A player will serve one (1) minute penalties in the penalty box and their team will play man-down for the following penalties: • Checking • Illegal substitution (too many players on the court) • Tripping

** The opposing team will receive the ball after a penalty.

**The penalized player may be released from the penalty box early if a goal is scored against their team.

4. Unsportsmanlike conduct -A player will serve one (1) two-minute penalty in the penalty box and their team will play man-down for the following penalties: • Objecting by word of mouth or action to any decision of an official (dissent) • All other Unsportsmanlike Conduct • Reckless Actions

** The opposing team will receive the ball. A penalized player may be released from the penalty box early if a goal is scored against their team.

5. Ejections -Players will be ejected immediately for the following fouls: • Cross-checking/violently slashing • Receiving five (5) one-minute penalties • Receiving two (2) two-minute penalties • Using insulting, offensive or abusive language two other players or • Exhibiting violent conduct in a fight or altercation • Spitting at another person • Physically damaging equipment or the facility

** The opposing team will receive the ball. Upon a player may be replaced after a period of three (3) minutes **

6. If any team receives ten (10) one-minute penalties or three (3) two-minute penalties (an ejection counting as two (2) two-minute penalties) then the referee will terminate the game. 7. Advantage – If a foul occurs on a player while on offense the referee will hold up his hand signaling a foul. If the team that committed the foul gains possession of the ball, the foul will be enforced. If a goal is scored, the foul will not be enforced.
