  • Gavin Newsom Names California's First Latino U.S. Senator to Replace
Gavin Newsom names California’s first Latino U.S. senator to replace Kamala Harris BY KIM BOJÓRQUEZ DECEMBER 22, 2020 10:00 AM, UPDATED 15 MINUTES AGO California Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed Secretary of State Alex Padilla as Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ successor in the U.S. Senate, making him the first Latino from California to fill the role in the state’s 170-year history. Newsom’s historic appointment comes after a coalition of Latino progressive groups pressed for Newsom to appoint Padilla, or another Latino, to represent California, where Latinos make up 40% of the population. “Through his tenacity, integrity, smarts and grit, California is gaining a tested fighter in their corner who will be a fierce ally in D.C., lifting up our state’s values and making sure we secure the critical resources to emerge stronger from this pandemic,” Newsom said in a statement. “He will be a Senator for all Californians.” TOP ARTICLES Soon after Harris was announced as Biden’s running mate in August, Padilla collected endorsements from BOLD PAC, the camgn arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus; the D.C.-based political action committee Latino Victory; the UFW Foundation and the California Latino Legislative Caucus. U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein also backed Padilla’s appointment. “I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me by Governor Newsom, and I intend to work each and every day to honor that trust and deliver for all Californians,” Padilla said in a statement. “From those struggling to make ends meet to the small businesses fighting to keep their doors open to the health care workers looking for relief, please know that I am going to the Senate to fight for you.

  • Notes and References
Notes and References Caveat: The Dangers of Behavioral Biology The contents of this book are known to be dangerous. I do not mean that in the sense that all ideas are potentially dangerous. Specifically, ideas about the biological basis of behavior have encouraged political tendencies and movements later regretted by all decent people and condemned in school histories. Why, then, purvey such ideas? Because some ideas in behavioral biology are true—among them, to the best of my knowledge, the ones in this book—and the truth is essential to wise action. But that does not mean that these ideas cannot be distorted, nor that evil acts cannot arise from them. I doubt, in fact, that what I say can prevent such distortion. Political and social movements arise from worldly causes, and then seize whatever congenial ideas are at hand. Nonethe- less, I am not comfortable in the company of scientists who are content to search for the truth and let the consequences accumulate as they may. I therefore recount here a few pas- sages in the dismal, indeed shameful history of the abuse of behavioral biology, in some of which scientists were willing participants. The first episode is recounted in William Stanton’s The Leopard’s Spots: Scientific Atti- tudes Toward Race in America, 1815–59 (Chicago: University of Chicago, 1960). Such names as Samuel George Morton, George Robins Gliddon, and Josiah Clark Nott mean little to present-day students of anthropology, but in the difficult decades between the death of Jeffer- son and the Civil War, they founded the American School of Anthropology.

  • A Collaborative Critical Literacy Praxis
DISCOURSE ITINERARIES IN AN EAP CLASSROOM: A COLLABORATIVE CRITICAL LITERACY PRAXIS by Christian Wai Chun A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Christian W. Chun (2010) DISCOURSE ITINERARIES IN AN EAP CLASSROOM: A COLLABORATIVE CRITICAL LITERACY PRAXIS Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Christian Wai Chun Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning University of Toronto 2010 Abstract This classroom ethnography documents the developing critical literacy pedagogy of an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructor over the course of several terms. My research, which involved extensive collaboration with the EAP instructor, explores how specific classroom practices and discourses are enacted and mediated through dialogic intertextualities, material objects, and social actions that frame representations about language, literacy, and what Lefebvre (1988) called “le quotidien” – the everyday, and how these affect the students’ meaning-making potential in specific ways. It also traces the contours (and detours) of the instructor’s classroom practices after the researcher’s mediation in the form of collaborative inquiries on functional grammar and critical literacy, and the effects of these classroom practices on making meaning in her EAP classes. I consider several issues from an integrated theory and practice perspective. Because of an urgent need to understand the students’ practices and epistemologies as they engage in ever newer forms of multimodal text productions, I contend that EAP classroom practices must be reshaped to facilitate more (inter)active engagements of the multimodal texts that saturate students’ lives, both inside the class and outside.

  • 2007 Book of Abstracts
Book of Graduates’ Research Abstracts Table of Contents: Preface Program List of Graduates Abstracts Class of 2007 Abstracts 1 Preface This is already the ninth Graduation Day of the Master of Corporate Communication Degree Program. We are proud to present the abstracts of the 12 theses that have been written by the Graduates of the Executive Master Program of Corporate Communication of the RSM Erasmus University Rotterdam in The Netherlands. In this tenth year we were able to allow seventeen new graduates to become Master of Corporate Communication. This means that we have 142 MCC graduates. Most of these MCC’s made a substantial career move after their graduation. I sincerely hope (but also expect) that the same will happen to the Graduates of this year. This year 12 representatives of the business world and non-profit organizations can celebrate their graduation of a program they participated in during two years of intense courses where they presented assignments, discussed the most recent academic theory and applied this to their daily life problems in their businesses. The participants graduating this year are: Drea Berghorst (AFM), Jasper de Boom (Bouwfonds Property Developmnet), Charlotte Bos (NOW), Eline Faber (KvK-Drenthe), Arjan Hoek (Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis), Ronald Jager (Pfizer), Saskia Kapinga (Shell Gas & Power), Gert-Jan Lantinga (ROC ASA), John de Munnik (Akzo Nobel), Gwendolyn Rahusen (HBO- Raad), Chris Roelen (Lionfish) and Aglaé Weijers (Bristol-Myers Squibb). I hope they have learned a lot during the courses we offered them in the past two years. The least I could say, also on behalf of all the teaching staff that worked with them, is that we have learned a lot from them too.
