ne thing that has changed dramatically since the crossbow began to be widely Oaccepted in archery seasons is the number of dealers who adamantly say they will never sell crossbows. Although they were in abundance several years ago, it is pretty hard to nd one today. e Crossbows crossbow has given the archery industry a shot in the arm and shaken up the status quo similar to the introduction of every new idea or major technology change, such as carbon arrows, the compound bow, the release and, for those among us that are older than dirt, the bow sight. Keep I have lived through all of the major changes in the archery industry since the 1950s. Every break- through originally caused some turmoil and, in some cases, heated protest. However, each revolt was short lived and resulted in new archers being drawn to the sport, as well as a boost in sales as Innovating the customer base, both new and old, embraced the latest changes and developments. e same thing has happened and is now happening with the crossbow. e crossbow has gone through many developments in both design and technology and the models on the market today are quite di erent from those introduced only a few short years ago. Crossbow designs are progressing along two basic lines: the conventional design with front mounted limbs and the design with reverse draw technology, which places the limbs between the shooter’s hands for improved balance. Reverse draw technology often results in increased speed due to a longer power stroke or a quieter bow since the draw weight can be lower and still generate respectable kinetic energy. In general, crossbows are getting lighter and narrower and o er a variety of speeds ranging from 300 to 370 feet per second, with some bows now topping 400 feet per second depending upon arrow weight and bow design. Bow draw weights range from 100 to over 200 pounds; some have xed weights while others are adjustable. Add the latest accessories and you have a crossbow combination to t every customer’s needs and price range. By talking to a cross-section of dealers in states where crossbows are legal for hunting, ArrowTrade has learned that crossbows account for approxi- mately 1/3 of total bow sales. at gure alone might lead the reader to believe that crossbows are cutting into vertical bow sales but that is not necessarily true.
