Preferred Citation [Identification of item], David D. Boyden papers, ARCHIVES BOYDEN 1, The Music Library, University of California, Berkeley. Biography David Dodge Boyden (b. Westport, CT, 10 Dec 1910; d. Berkeley, CA, 18 Sep 1986). American musicologist. He studied at Harvard (BA 1932, MA 1938) and at Columbia Universities, and the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut. From 1938 to 1975, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley, where he became a full professor in 1955; he served as chairman of the music department from 1955 to 1961. His publications include the widely-read An Introduction to Music (1956, 1970, Inventory of the David D. Boyden ARCHIVES BOYDEN 1 2 Papers, 1922-1986 rev.), but the main thrust of his research had been on the history of string instruments and playing. His History of Violin Playing from its Origins to 1761 (1965) is a major work of scholarship. In 1957 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Hartt School of Music. He had been twice vice-president of the American Musicological Society (1954-56, 1960-62), a Fullbright Fellow at Oxford University (1963), and three times recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (1954, 1967, and 1970). -- New Grove Dictionary of American Music Scope and Content This collection contains correspondence, slides, photographs, microfilms, cassette and reel-to-reel tapes, other papers, and memorabilia. The musical instruments in paintings section was acquired in the late 1970s from David Boyden, probably at the time of his retirement. The bulk of the collection, approximately 29 archival cartons, was given by Boyden's widow, Ruth, in 1988. This gift included research and administrative files, and correspondence. The third part of the gift was given to us by Boyden's sons, Richard and Tom. This is the smallest of the collection, consisting of private correspondence, other papers and memorabilia. The first part of the gift was sent to storage in 1987 and the second part in November, 1988. The materials were not processed and they were kept in their original folders. At the time of the second gift, Boyden's papers had been partially boxed and files had been shifted from the cabinets so that the original order of the files could not be established. However, there were some logical sequence of topics because the labelled file dividers were still intact. The then-archivist made a complete review of additional files, papers, photographs, and documents in Boyden's study in his Maybeck house (1208 Shattuck Ave.). An additional two cartons of papers were acquired by John Emerson and they were incorporated into the collection. The bulk of the microfilm collection of David Boyden has been in the library's custody since before 1980. Most of these microfilms were incorporated into the Music Library's regular collection. The last part of the gift was given to the Music Library in 1992 after Ruth Boyden's death. Richard and Tom Boyden also funded the processing of the collection. The collection, as it stands now, has retained whatever order the papers were left in in 1988. All materials have been refoldered, retaining David Boyden's original folder titles. Legal-sized papers were pulled out and stored in Boxes 4 and 17, noting the original location. Similarly, oversized materials were pulled out and kept in Boxes 29 and 30. Boxes 34-36 I. ALTERED STATES OF PERFORMANCE: SCORDATURA IN THE CLASSICAL GUITAR REPERTOIRE by COREY JAMES FLOWERS (Under the Direction of Michael Heald) ABSTRACT Scordatura is commonplace in the guitar repertoire, though there are relatively few resources available that explain the approach to its use, either from a performer’s or a composer’s perspective. Through examination of specific selections in the classical guitar repertoire, this document offers an introduction to various alternate tunings for the guitar, beginning with tunings used to transcribe lute and vihuela music, and progressing to modern experimentations found in the literature. Each piece on the accompanying recording provides insight into the use of these alternate tunings by highlighting specific musical characteristics that are made possible, or are idiomatic, in each tuning, such as extended ranges, open string relationships, unique chord voicings, and the ease of introducing contrasting tonal centers across a program. The CD provides a basis for aural comparison of the tunings and is a resource for performers interested in this repertoire. It also provides examples for composers and arrangers wishing to approach writing for the guitar using non-standard tunings. As additional resources, a glossary of terminology is provided, concerning tunings found in the document, as well as tunings used outside of the classical repertoire that may be useful for experimentation. An index of scordatura repertoire is provided as well, offering a broad overview of additional repertoire for further

Baroque Instruments The Baroque Cello and Its Performance Marc Vanscheeuwijck The instrument we now call a cello (or violoncello) apparently deve- loped during the first decades of the 16th century from a combina- tion of various string instruments of popular European origin (espe- cially the rebecs) and the vielle. Although nothing precludes our hypothesizing that the bass of the violins appeared at the same time as the other members of that family, the earliest evidence of its existence is to be found in the treatises of Agricola,1 Gerle,2 Lanfranco,3 and Jambe de Fer.4 Also significant is a fresco (1540- 42) attributed to Giulio Cesare Luini in Varallo Sesia in northern Italy, in which an early cello is represented (see Fig. 1). 1 Martin Agricola, Musica instrumentalis deudsch (Wittenberg, 1529; enlarged 5th ed., 1545), f. University of Puget Sound, Honors Program Tacoma, Washington April 18, 2016 Fuhrman !2 Introduction and Presentation of My Argument My story of how I became inclined to write a thesis on Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major is both unique and essential to describe before I begin the bulk of my writing. After seeing the famously virtuosic violinist Augustin Hadelich and pianist Joyce Yang give an extremely emotional and perfected performance of Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major at the Aspen Music Festival and School this past summer, I became addicted to the piece and listened to it every day for the rest of my time in Aspen. I always chose to listen to the same recording of Franck’s Violin Sonata by violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Jeremy Denk, in my opinion the highlight of their album entitled French Impressions, released in 2012. After about a month of listening to the same recording, I eventually became accustomed to every detail of their playing, and because I had just started learning the Sonata myself, attempted to emulate what I could remember from the recording.

1 This paper is a revised version of my article ‘Towards a more consistent and more historical view of Bach’s Violoncello’, published in Chelys Vol. 32 (2004), p. 49. N.B. at the end of this document readers can download the music examples. Towar ds a different, possibly more historical view of Bach’s Violoncello Was Bach's Violoncello a small CGda Violoncello “played like a violin” (as Bach’s Weimar collegue Johann Gottfried Walther 1708 stated)? Lambert Smit N.B. In this paper 18 th century terms are in italics. Introduction Bias and acquired preferences sometimes cloud people’s views. Modern musicians’ fondness of their own instruments sometimes obstructs a clear view of the history of each single instrument. Some instrumentalists want to defend the territory of their own instrument or to enlarge 1 it. However, in the 18 th century specialization in one instrument, as is the custom today, was unknown. 2 Names of instruments in modern ‘Urtext’ editions can be misleading: in the Neue Bach Ausgabe the due Fiauti d’ Echo in Bach’s score of Concerto 4 .to (BWV 1049) are interpreted as ‘Flauto dolce’ (=recorder, Blockflöte, flûte à bec), whereas a Fiauto d’ Echo was actually a kind of double recorder, consisting of two recorders, one loud and one soft. (see internet and Bachs Orchestermusik by S. Rampe & D. Sackmann, p. 279280). 1 The bassoon specialist Konrad Brandt, however, argues against the habit of introducing a bassoon in every movement in Bach’s church music where oboes are played (the theory ‘wo Oboen, da auch Fagott’) BachJahrbuch '68.
