    THE THIN LINE: Life on the Edge Skier Biographies BODE MILLER Bode Miller burst onto the World Cup scene as an 18-year-old in 1996 and first gained widespread recognition when he won two silver medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics in the Giant Slalom and Combined events. Miller has won a total of four gold medals and one silver medal at the World Championships. In the 2004/2005 Season, Miller won his first overall FIS World Cup title, outlasting Austrian Benjamin Raich. In the 2006/07 Season, Miller finished 4th overall and won the Super G title. In May 2007, Miller announced that he was leaving the U.S. Ski Team to race as an independent. PICABO STREET One of the most prolific women’s racers to ever grace the U.S. Ski Team, Picabo Street was most definitely a ski racing personality. The native of tiny Triumph, Idaho announced her retirement from competition following the 2002 women’s Olympic downhill at Snowbasin, Utah, ending a career that included nine career World Cup victories, the 1995 and 1996 World Cup downhill discipline titles and a trio of World Championships medals to go along with her two Olympic medals, including the Super-G gold at the 1998 Nagano Games. In addition, Street collected a total of four U.S. National titles during her illustrious career, despite being injured and away from ski racing for two years. Yvonne Maria Rørvik Department of Product Design Engineering Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) ABSTRACT Products that are designed for professional athletes are products of high quality and endurance, since the athletes often rely on their equipment to be the best. To create these kind of products, designers must work with the best materials and test their products for improvement often to be able to get the best possible solution possible. In addition to this, there are rules and regulations that must be taken into consideration to make sure that the product is safe to use, and that it does not violate any laws or constrictions given by unions such as FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski). This paper looks at the challenges and factors to take into consideration when designing for professional athletes, alpine skiers in particular. Since alpine ski racing is a sport with high risk of knee injuries, the focus for this article will be to look at safety and injury prevention. It will also be to look at the effectiveness of sponsorship, and will give guidelines to what a designer should take into consideration when designing for professional alpine skiers.     FY 2006/07 Annual Report 2 • MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The United States Ski and Snowboard Association just concluded one of the most important years in its over 100-year history. This achievement is thanks to the generous support of our donors and partners who continue to invest in USSA’s vision to be best in the world, and to the clubs, coaches, officials, parents and tens of thousands of volunteers who have provided leadership to young athletes. The 2006/07 season was highlighted with athletic success at all levels. Through the strong work of the USSA’s 400 clubs, the organization saw an eighth straight year of membership growth. And for the first time in history, we were able to increase athletic funding in a post-Olympic year! The hallmark of the year was the USSA Board of Director’s decision to move forward on a national training and education center – the Center of Excellence – to benefit all of USSA’s stakeholders. The facility will be a world class training TEAM center, but will also provide education, sport medicine and sport science to Constituent groups within USSA working in the USSA’s 400 clubs and 30,000 members. Physical conditioning is the partnership to be the best in the world cornerstone of any successful athletic program and the Center will provide that for athletes from clubs through the national teams. LOYALTY Steadfast allegiance to USSA’s Vision, It’s exciting for all of us to see great results from the World Cup and World Mission, Goals and Values Championships.
