6 - 2005-06 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS Friar Outlook 2005-06 Friar Basketball Youthful Friars Looking To Make Their Mark In The "New" BIG EAST...

It is an exciting time in Providence, Rhode Island. In addition to being home of the Friars, Providence is also the home of the BIG EAST Conference. The 2005-06 season will mark the beginning of a number of significant changes for the BIG EAST and the Friars. With four freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors and two seniors on the roster, Head Coach Tim Welsh will look to a youthful, but talented Friar squad to make its mark in the newly expanded BIG EAST. The BIG EAST will be the largest and most competitive basketball conference in the nation this season as its membership has grown to 16 schools with the addition of Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette and South Florida. This will provide a unique challenge for the young Friars. However, with some talented newcomers and a group of skilled veterans, Coach Welsh's squad will be prepared for the competition. The Friars will get veteran leadership from senior Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.), as well as juniors Dwight Brewington (Lynn, Mass.) and Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.). McGrath should be ready to guide the Friars in his final year of eligibility. A starter since his freshman year, he has the ability to lead the team. Brewington and Hill also understand the college game and Coach Welsh's system. Joining the upperclassmen and ready to help the team are the four sophomores. Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.), DeSean White (Philadelphia, Pa.), Charles Burch (Dorchester, Mass.) and Ray Cross (Cumberland, R.I.) all played valuable minutes last season. Their ability to contribute will play an integral part in the team's success. Once again, Coach Welsh and his staff have brought in a highly regarded recruiting class. These four newcomers should help in all areas for the Friars. From the backcourt to the frontcourt, each one of these newcomers has skill. Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Jonathan Kale (Mattapan, Mass.), Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) and Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) comprise one of the Friars' top recruiting classes in recent years. Although the Friars will have one of the youngest teams in the BIG EAST this season, the Friar faithful are excited for another season of high-tempo PC basketball featuring some strong returning veterans and an impresseive freshman class.

THE BACKCOURT Depth should be one of the strengths of the backcourt this season. The Friars will open the season with seven players on the roster that have the ability to the play the guard position. This could be a key factor to the team's success as they have been troubled by injuries in the past. Most importantly, the team's floor leader for the past three seasons will return to guide the squad. Senior DONNIE MCGRATH (Katonah, N.Y.) has started 90 games for the Friars since his freshman season. He enters his final season as one of the top three-point threats in the BIG EAST. Last season, McGrath tied the NCAA single-game, three-point percentage mark when he shot 9-9 from three-point territory in a win over Virginia on February 2, 2005. The 6-foot-4-inch sharpshooter ranked second in BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage in league play last season as he made 40 of his 93 attempts (.430). In overall action, he ranked third amongst BIG EAST players in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 72 of 175 attempts (.411) from three-point territory. One of the top all-time three point shooters at Providence, McGrath ranks second all-time at PC in threes made with 197 in 91 games. He needs just four threes to break the school record. Last season, he averaged 9.7 points and 3.83 assists per game. The 2005 campaign marked the third consecutive season that McGrath recorded more than 100 assists. For the last two seasons he has ranked among the top players in the league in -to- turnover ratio. The Friars will need his steady ball handling this season. With a large group of underclassmen on the roster, his leadership will be essential. Junior DWIGHT BREWINGTON (Lynn, Mass.) was developing into a consistent scorer last season before he was sidelined with an injury that forced him to miss eight of the last nine games. He opened the season with an impressive offensive performance in which he averaged 21. 5 points in four Preseason NIT contests, including consecutive 23-point efforts versus No. 1 Wake Forest and Michigan. As a result of his stellar play, he was named to the Preseason NIT All-Tournament Team. He finished second on the team in scoring last season, averaging 13.3 points per game. The 6-foot-5-inch Lynn, Massachusetts native is very athletic. His size and athleticism enable him to help on the boards. Last season, he averaged 4.3 rebounds per game. The team will count on him to score this season as well as be an effective defender. Three newcomers will bolster the backcourt this season. Freshmen SHARAUD CURRY (Gainesville, Ga.), WEYINMI EFEJUKU (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) and GEOFF MCDERMOTT (New Rochelle, N.Y.) were all highly recruited and capable of contributing this season for the Friars. Curry, a 5-foot-10-inch, 165-pound guard, attended Wheeler High School for three years in Marietta, Ga. and finished his career ranked third all-time in scoring with 1,874 points. He helped Wheeler capture the Class AAAAA title in 2003 and 2005. As a senior, Curry averaged 21 points and seven assists per game. In recognition of his impressive senior season, he was named Atlanta Journal Constitution, Marietta Daily Journal and Georgia Sports Writers Class AAAAA Player of the Year. He is an excellent athlete who can penetrate and finish at the rim. Curry also can shoot threes and works hard on the defensive end of the court. Efejuku comes to Providence after spending a post-graduate year at Brewster Academy. He helped lead Brewster to a top-10 national ranking after averaging 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds per game. Prior to attending Brewster, Efejuku played three seasons at national power Rice High School in Manhattan, N.Y. for Head Coach Maurice Hicks. At 6-feet-5-inches tall, Efejuku is another big body in the Friar backcourt. He is a versatile player who can lead the team in transition and penetrate to the basket. McDermott, the largest member of the Friar backcourt at

6-feet-7-inches, is a unique athlete. With size, speed and strength, McDermott also will play at the forward position. A very highly sought after player last spring, McDermott also received several scholarship offers for Division I football programs. A two-sport star at New Rochelle High School, he led the school to a 26-2 mark in basketball and to the Class AA state football title game as a quarterback. McDermott averaged 19.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game in 2005 and was named Westchester's Mr. Basketball. He is a gritty player who has excellent vision to distribute the ball. Sophomore RAY CROSS (Cumberland, R.I.) and senior TIM ENGLERT (Ramsey, N.J.) are two walk-ons who can contribute. Cross, who attended the St. Andrew's School in Barrington, R.I., earned playing time his first year with the Friars. He saw action in 12 games in 2005 and demonstrated that he has the skills to compete in the BIG EAST. Englert, who is entering his third season with the Friars, has played in five career gamesz.

THE FRONTCOURT The Friars' lineup will have a new look this year. For the first time in four years the Friars will not have No. 3 leading the way. Ryan Gomes has graduated and moved on to the NBA. For the last four seasons, Gomes has been patrolling the Friar frontcourt and cementing his name in the College's record books. This three-time All-BIG EAST player also earned All-America honors while establishing Providence's all-time scoring record with 2,138 career points. Already remembered as one of the all-time great Friars, Gomes will be missed. Every opening in the lineup creates an opportunity and the Friars have plenty of energetic newcomers and returnees looking to establish their own legacy at Providence College this season. Sophomore RANDALL HANKE (New York, N.Y.) and junior HERBERT HILL (Kinston, N.C.) could be ready to become forces in the BIG EAST. Hanke entered his freshman season fighting for playing time and learning the college game. When March arrived last season, he started to show promise. Hanke scored 17 or more points in three of his final four games and recorded a double-double in the final two regular season games to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors. In 30 games, the 6-foot-11-inch center averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds. What was most impressive was that when he shot the ball he made it count. Hanke established the Friar all-time single season field goal percentage mark as he shot a sizzling 72.2 percent (83-115) from the field. He also demonstrated that he has a nose for the ball as he finished fourth in the league in blocked shots, averaging 2.07 per game. Hanke set the Friar freshman record for blocks in a game when made nine in the second half of a victory at Memphis on December 23, 2004. Hill also is an excellent shot blocker. He ranked 12th in the league in 2005 with 1.50 blocks per game. Last season, he averaged 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Hill, who did not see any action his first season, is entering his fourth season at PC and is well adjusted to the Friar system. At 6-feet-10-inches tall, Hill provides a tall athletic presence down low for the Friars. Sophomores DESEAN WHITE (Philadelphia, Pa.) and CHARLES BURCH (Dorchester, Mass.) each gained valuable playing time last season. White, a 6-foot-7-inch, 230-pound forward, came to Providence as one of the top recruits in the East last season. He saw action in 29 games in 2005 and averaged 5.5 points and 2.9 rebounds. He scored a season-high 14 points versus Syracuse on January 15. He has the ability to fill the lane with his big body, but also has a soft touch with his mid-range jump shot. White has good vision for distributing the ball. A 6-foot-6-inch, 218-pound combo forward, Burch saw action in 25 games and averaged 9.2 minutes per game last year. He has the ability to shoot from three-point territory, but he also can play down low in the blocks. Friar fans are excited about the two newcomers to the frontcourt. Freshman JONATHAN KALE (Mattapan, Mass.) and McDermott are physical players who will help replace the loss of Gomes down low. Kale is a wide-body who works hard to . He starred for the last two years at the St. Andrew's School where he led the squad to the Final Four of NEPSAC Class C each year. As a senior, Kale averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds per game. He's been developing his outside shooting and improving his ball handling and defense. McDermott, who also could see time in backcourt, has the ability to help the team in a variety of ways. As would be expected from an All-State football player, McDermott is not afraid of contact. His strength and desire should be a key addition on the offensive and defensive boards. Junior SEAN VAN DE WALLE (Elmhurst, Ill.) will return for his third season with the Friars. Van De Walle joined the squad as a walk- on his freshman season. During his first two seasons, he has played in six games.

OVERVIEW The 2005-06 Friar basketball season officially tips off at Late Night Madness on October 14. This will be a special night for Friar fans as they will get their first glimpse at what promises to be a very exciting basketball team. This youthful and energized squad is ready to enter the expanded BIG EAST with an entertaining brand of basketball. With three seasons of experience as a starter for the Friars, senior Donnie McGrath will play an important role on and off the court. He will need to provide veteran leadership for the underclassmen. The team also will be counting on his consistent ball handling and lethal outside shot. Dwight Brewington and Herbert Hill join McGrath as the other experienced players on the team. Brewington has shown signs of being a major scoring factor in the Friar lineup. An injury free season in 2005-06 will allow fans to see all the skills of this unique athlete. After three seasons in the Friar system, Hill appears ready to become an impact player. He will need to increase his production this season for the Friars. Randall Hanke, DeSean White and Charles Burch all gained experience last season in their first year with the Friars. Hanke showed tremendous improvement at the end of the season and will look to continue his growth this season. White had a productive rookie season. He has offensive skill and provides a big body in the lineup. Burch will give the team depth and maturity in the lineup. There will be many new faces on the Friar bench this season. 20 - 2005-06 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS 2004-05 Review 2005-06 Friar Basketball The 2004-05 Providence College men's basketball campaign was highlighted by one of Providence's greatest players - - Ryan Gomes. With Gomes returning for his senior season, the Friars faced a tough schedule. In fact, the Friars' played the 12th most difficult schedule in the nation in 2005. The difficult schedule brought plenty of national exposure. The Friars appeared on national television 11 times, including two games on ESPN and one game televised on CBS. Although, the team did not reach the post-season, Gomes did lead a young Friar squad to a 14-17 mark overall and a 4-12 record in BIG EAST action. The Friars finished the season strong, winning three of the final four regular-season games to finish in ninth place in league standings. The team's record was not indicative of how well this resilient group of players performed. The team opened the season by posting a 3-1 mark in the Preseason NIT, with the squad's only loss being a 79-67 defeat to top-ranked Wake Forest at Madison Square Garden. Included in the team's 3-1 record in the Tournament was a 72-63 win over Michigan on November 26 in the consolation game. It was team's 1,200th victory all-time. Providence joined UConn, Rhode Island and Yale as the only teams in New England to reach the 1,200 victory plateau. The Friars completed their non-conference schedule with an impressive 10-4 record against one of the toughest non- conference schedules in the nation, earning wins at Memphis and San Diego State. At home the Friars defeated state-rival Rhode Island and intracity rival Brown. PC also posted a significant home win over ACC foe Virginia, which was the 400th win all-time for the Friars at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. In league play, the Friars suffered a number of heart-wrenching defeats but always battled to the end. Eight of the team's 12 league losses were by five points or less and two losses were in overtime. Lastly, in 10 of the Friars' 12 BIG EAST losses Providence was within at least four points in the final 1:50 of every game. Despite the fact that the Friars had some tough luck throughout the season, PC fans will always remember the consis- tently hard-play of Head Coach Tim Welsh's team, especially that of All-American Ryan Gomes. Gomes finished his career as the team's all-time leading scorer (2,138 points), eclipsing Jimmy Walker's record of 2,045 points that stood since 1967. Gomes also finished his career ranked fifth all-time in rebounding (1,028 rebounds). He is the first player in the history of Friar basketball and just the sixth player in the history of the BIG EAST to score more than 2,000 points and register 1,000 rebounds. His final year with the Friars was special as he became just the second Friar ever to lead the BIG EAST in scoring with an average of 23.2 ppg in league play and 21.6 ppg in overall action. He also finished 10th in the nation in scoring. For his efforts he earned his second consecutive First Team All-BIG EAST honor, making him the first PC player ever to receive two First Team BIG EAST accolades. Nationally, Gomes picked up some more All-America recognition as he was named Honorable Mention Associated Press All-American. In addition to Gomes, several other Friars had memorable seasons. Senior Tuukka Kotti (Forssa, Finland) concluded a very steady career, averaging 9.9 ppg and 5.8 rpg in 2005. Junior Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) continued to display his skills as one of the top three point shooters in the nation. McGrath shot 41.1 percent (72-175) from behind the three-point arc. In a 98-79 win over Virginia on February 2, McGrath tied the NCAA single-game, three-point field goal percentage mark as he was 9-9 from three-point territory. Despite missing eight games with an injury, sophomore Dwight Brewington (Lynn, Mass.) finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 ppg. In the middle, freshman Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.) showed tremendous potential. Hanke came on strong over the team's final four games of the season, recording two double-doubles and earning BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors. He set several records during the season, including the Friar freshman mark as he recorded nine at Memphis on December 23. Hanke also established PC's single-season field goal percentage record as he shot 72.2 percent (83-115) from the field. He shattered the old mark of 63.6 percent set by Otis Thorpe in 1983. Hill also was a shot blocking force for Providence. He finished second on the team in blocks with 45 in 2005. The two combined to help the team finish seventh in the nation in blocked shots. In 31 games, the Friars made 187 blocks and averaged 6.0 blocks per game. The 187 blocks is the third highest single-season total all-time at Providence. The 2005 season marked the end of Ryan Gomes' career as a Friar. Friar fans will forever remember the consist play of Number 3 and all the memories he provided over the last four seasons.
