He’d also had his jersey retired by a team on which he never even played(Miami Heat). Jordan played his last game on April 16, 2003, at The First Union Center against the Philadelphia 76ers. Michael Jordan is a candidate for being the greatest basketball player of all time as a result of his drive to be better than everyone else. Not only did he push himself, but all the players he’s ever teamed up with say that he would push them to be the best that they could and that each player was at their best when Jordan was on the floor. He also holds the record for the highest career regular-season scoring average as well as the highest career playoff scoring average. The longevity of Jordan’s career is impressive on its own, but to have stayed as competitive as he did all the way through it is another story.

The College’s enhanced institutional image among our prestigious peer institutions and the excellence of our athletic programs continues to grow since joining the NCAA Division II in 1998. Last March the George R. Newman Center, the College’s state-of-the-art athletic facility, served as host of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with the winners receiving automatic bids to the NCAA Division II national tournaments for the first time. The success of our athletic teams speaks for itself. Our fine basketball teams have great traditions that include multiple conference championships and national tournament appearances. This fall, our men’s soccer team received its first national ranking and appeared in the New England Region rankings all season. And this past spring the softball team repeated as CACC champions and participated in the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament for the second consecutive season.

Introduction Amateur sports in America today, especially youth basketball, are rich sources of opportunities for growth, community, and physical activity for aspiring athletes. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) has helped stimulate the growth of basketball in the country exponentially, yet has also contributed to the establishment of an environment infested by corporate jostling over young stars and questionable recruiting tactics used by Division I college coaches.1 As the most influential and recognizable competitive basketball organizations in the country, it is the responsibility of the AAU, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA),2 National Basketball Association (NBA),3 and the newly-formed iHoops (―Youth Basketball Initiative‖)4 to implement changes to address the negative influences on amateur basketball. The AAU and Youth Basketball Initiative must take affirmative steps to significantly strengthen regulations to minimize the influences of sponsors seeking to use the game to exert control over amateur athletes. Furthermore, it is imperative that the AAU work with the NCAA to eliminate grey area in rules that is currently being exploited by Division I college coaches seeking *Paul Pogge currently holds the position of Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Denver. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in finance, he earned his Juris Doctorate from Notre Dame Law School and became a licensed attorney in the state of Colorado.
