7 - 2007-08 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS 2007-08 Friar Basketball Friar Outlook Experience and Depth Dominate Friar Roster in 2007-08... Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh and his staff have worked very hard over the last two years developing young Friar teams. It became evident that Coach Welsh was not merely building a competitive squad, but a team that would be able to challenge for the BIG EAST title and qualify for the NCAA Tournament. In the last two years, the team has lost just two players to graduation. This has resulted in a large group of young players that have been able to develop and gain experience in the always competitive BIG EAST Conference. In the fall of 2005, four freshmen began their collegiate basketball careers at Providence College. Those four freshmen showed tremen- dous poise and potential as they all became integral parts of the team. Now, two years later, these young talented players have become veteran BIG EAST athletes. Juniors Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.), Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.), Jonathan Kale (Mattapan, Mass.) and Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) are ready to help the Friars have a special season in 2007-08. In addition to all the experience provided by these four juniors, two more juniors and one senior combine to give the Friars one of the most veteran squads in the BIG EAST. Senior Charles Burch (Dorchester, Mass.) has been a consistent performer over three seasons at Providence. Although he missed the final 14 games of the 2007 season, Burch still provided leadership all season. Juniors Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) and Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) give the Friars one of the deepest junior classes in the nation. Sophomores Ray Hall (Denver, Colo.), Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Dwain Williams (San Diego, Calif.) fill out the roster of returnees. These three all gained valuable experience last season and are ready to make significant contributions in 2007-08. Freshmen have consistently made an impact over the years for the Friars and once again that could prove to be the case this year. Three talented newcomers will look to contribute anyway possible. Freshmen Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Alex Kellogg (Columbus, Ohio) and Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) all have the ability to help the team. Last season, the Friars finished with an 18-13 mark overall and qualified for the NIT. That could be a small preview of some to the tremendous potential of the 2007-08 Friars. This season, the fans in Friartown are ready for some exciting times when this veteran squad opens the season.

THE BACKCOURT Experience, skill and depth are three words that can accurately describe the Friar backcourt this season. Juniors Sharaud Curry and Weyinmi Efejuku are the returning starters, but they will have plenty of help this season. Junior transfer Jeff Xavier is eligible to compete after sitting out last season and sophomores Brian McKenzie and Dwain Williams each had successful freshmen seasons and proved that they could play in the BIG EAST. Curry has started 54 of the 57 games he has played over the last two seasons. After earning BIG EAST All-Rookie Team honors in 2006, he had another strong season in 2007 as he was named All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention. Curry, who has seen significant time as the team's point guard, was second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. He registered a team-high 52 three pointers as he shot 37 percent (52-139) from behind the arc. He also led the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage at 90.1 percent, which is the fifth highest single-season average all-time at PC. A prolific scorer, Curry possesses the ability to take over a game and pace the offense. In 2007, Friar senior Herbert Hill was named the BIG EAST Most Improved Player. However, most people who followed the team last season would note that Weyinmi Efejuku was not far behind Hill in improvement. Efejuku, who is a superior athlete, started all 31 games and finished third on the team in scoring (14.1 ppg). He scored 20 or more points seven times, including a career-high 28 points versus the Bradley in the NIT on March 15, 2007. Efejuku worked on his shooting and the results were impressive. After shooting 35.4 percent (58-164) from the field as a freshman, he shot 46.5 percent (147-316) last season. At 6-feet-5-inches tall, Efejuku also provides a big body in the backcourt. Xavier, a native of Pawtucket, R.I. dreamed of playing for the Friars as a youth growing up in the Ocean State. After two productive years at Manhattan, Xavier transferred to Providence following the 2006 season. He practiced with the team last year, and he now is eager to fulfill his childhood dreams of playing at Providence. Xavier should add a presence to the team. He is mature and competitive. Xavier, a 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pound guard, averaged 16.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.9 assists in 31 games for the Jaspers in 2005-06. For his efforts he was named Second Team All-Metro Atlantic Conference and All-New York City Third Team. In each of his two seasons at Manhattan, he led the team in three pointers. As a freshman, Xavier recorded 48 threes and hit a Mahattan single- season record of 77 three pointers as a sophomore. Sophomores Brian McKenzie and Dwain Williams each played significant roles last year and should continue to improve in 2008. At 6- feet-4-inches tall, McKenzie is similar to Efejuku as they both have excellent size and superior athletic ability Last season, he played in 28 games and averaged 3.7 points per contest. Williams, who can play the point guard position, started four games last season and led the Friars to a 3-1 mark, which included wins over Seton Hall and nationally ranked Marquette. A talented shooter from San Diego, Calif., he shot a team best 44 percent (37-84) from behind the three-point arc as a rookie. He averaged 7.5 points per game and he scored a career-high 21 points versus West Virginia at the BIG EAST Tournament. Freshman Marshon Brooks will fill out the backcourt. The 6-foot-5-inch freshmen handled the point-guard duties for Tucker High School in 2007. He also played the and wing positions in high school. He is a versatile player who can help in many ways. He can score and really finish on the fast break. He also can hurt opponents with his ability to shoot threes. Brooks led Tucker High School to a 31-2 mark as the squad captured the 2007 Georgia Class AAAA state title. Brooks averaged 20.1 points, 6.0 assists and 8.0 rebounds in 33 games in 2007. He shot 53.3 percent from the field overall and 39 percent (47-119) from three-point territory as a senior. For his efforts, Brooks earned 2007 Class AAAA All-State honors.

8 - 2007-08 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS Friar Outlook 2007-08 Friar Basketball

Sophomore walk-on Luke Burchett (Western Springs, Ill.) joined the team last year and saw action in three games.

THE FRONTCOURT Head Coach Tim Welsh lost just one senior to graduation following the 2007 season. Unfortunately, that one senior was center Herbert Hill. Hill had an incredible season in 2007, earning BIG EAST Most Improved Player and First Team All-BIG EAST accolades. Hill was just the third Friar ever to lead the BIG EAST in scoring as he averaged 19.9 points per game in league play. He also was dominant on the boards as he averaged 9.8 rebounds per game in BIG EAST games. Although Hill leaves a big void in the lineup, the frontcourt is filled with returning talent that has the potential to take the squad deep into the post season. Although the frontcourt is loaded with talent, any discussion about that group of players should begin with junior Geoff McDermott. McDermott is one of the most unique players in the BIG EAST. For the last two seasons the 6-foot-8-inch forward has led the team in rebounding, averaging more than nine rebounds per game each season. One of the things that makes McDermott such a special player is that he has the ability to be one of the top rebounders in the league. He also is one of top ball distributors in the BIG EAST. A very gifted athlete, who was one of the top high school quarterbacks in New York his senior year of high school, McDermott made a bid to become the first forward ever to lead the BIG EAST in assists in 2007. He ended the season ranking third in the league in assists, averaging 5.13 per game. He is the first player in Friar history to record more than 250 rebounds and more than 150 assists in the same season. In 2007, he recorded 159 assists and 283 rebounds in 31 games. Only eight other Friars have recorded 100 or more rebounds and 100 or more assists in the same season. McDermott has started every game of his collegiate career. He averaged 9.5 points per game last season and earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention accolades. Charles Burch will be looked to to provide veteran leadership as the lone senior on the team. Burch was forced to miss the final 14 games of the 2007 season as he battled an injury. He has worked hard to get himself fit for his final season at Providence and he should play a key role in the team's success. In addition to his maturity, Burch is a strong defender. He also adds to the offense with timely three point shooting and tenacious play down low. As a sophomore, he led the team in three-point shooting, connecting on 16 of 40 attempts (40 percent). The 6-foot-7-inch, 225-pound forward earned the team's Coaches' Award in 2007. Junior center Randall Hanke will return to the lineup after missing last season with an injury. He will try to fill the void created by the graduation of Hill. The 6-foot-11-inch, 240-pound center has always displayed impressive offensive potential. He had a strong conclusion to his rookie season in 2005 by establishing the Friar all-time single season percentage mark as he shot 72.2 percent (83-115) from the field. In his sophomore campaign, Hanke saw much more action, but continued to score at a prolific pace. He started 20 of 27 games and was 149 of 220 from the field, averaging 13.0 points per game. He scored 20 or more points six times, including a career-high 34-point effort in a win over Northeastern on December 20, 2005. Hanke led the nation in field goal percentage at 67.7 percent in 2006. He also averaged 5.0 rebounds and 1.56 blocks per game as a sophomore. Hanke has excellent hands and runs the floor very well. His soft touch, coupled with his athleticism and long reach make him a difficult player to guard in the low post. Junior Jonathan Kale is the fourth upperclassman in the PC frontcourt. He started the team’s final 18 games of the season in 2007. He averaged 7.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the season. He scored in double figures in nine games, including a career-high 18 points against Longwood on January 2. He ranked second on the team in free throws, shooting 82.4 percent from the charity stripe. Kale is a rugged forward, who has shown continual improvement each year. His enthusiasm and drive have made him a fan favorite with the Friar fans. The lone sophomore in the Friar frontcourt is Ray Hall. Hall, a 6-foot-11-inch, 265-pound center, played in 23 of the team's 31 games last season. He gained valuable experience coming off the bench. He scored a season-high 10 points against George Washington. Hall, one of the largest players in the history of Friar basketball, has the size and skill to be a consistent player in the BIG EAST. Two newcomers to the lineup are freshmen Jamine Peterson and Alex Kellogg. Peterson, who is a high-energy, combo forward who can and is a strong finisher, attended Notre Dame Prep. in 2006-07. He averaged 15.2 points and 11.0 rebounds while helping Notre Dame to a 32-3 mark and the Prep School national title in 2007. Peterson spent four years at Boys & Girls High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. His senior season, he earned First Team All-City honors at Boys & Girls High School after averaging 24.7 points and 14.0 rebounds in 2006. Kellogg, the son of CBS-TV college basketball analyst and former NBA star Clark Kellogg, played for four years at St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus. As a senior season, the 6-foot-7-inch, 225-pound forward averaged 18.3 points and 10.0 rebounds while serving as the team captain in 2007. Kellogg earned second team all-state honors, first team all-district and first team all-league in 2007. He is an athletic forward with good size and strength. Junior Chris Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) enters his third season with the team. Baudinet played in seven games in 2007. He has developed into a prodctive member of the team.

OVERVIEW For the last two years the Friars have been one of the youngest teams in college basketball. However, it was evident that this young squad had the potential to become a force in the BIG EAST. Last season, the team experienced some success, posting a 3-3 record versus ranked squads, finishing 18-13 and qualifying for the NIT. This season, Friar fans have high expectations for this talented group of players. Lone senior Charles Burch is coming off an injury plagued junior year, but he is expected to provide leadership and strong play this season. Junior forwards Geoff McDermott and Jon Kale will be a strong presence down low as they can dominate on the boards. Both 9 - 2007-08 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS 2007-08 Friar Basketball Friar Outlook
