BUILDING STRONG LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER COMMUNITIES IN THE LANSING AREA Letter from the Prez by Penny Gardner, LAHR President

Sometime is limited

Well, it is March and I have just realized, as I approach 70 years of age, that I am mortal! Don’t you think someone would have told me that sooner?

“Get cracking”, I can hear my grandmother snap at me. With this transforming realization, I know that if sometime is limited, I had better use my time wisely. Using my time wisely when I approached 60 when seemingly sometime was unlimited; is different than using my time wisely holding the realization that sometime is limited.

Again warningly I hear, “My Marilyn” whispering in my ear, “Remember Penny it is not about you. You are writing a letter from the President of LAHR, a distinguished organization with a long time history of advocacy, change, and making life better for all who live in our home town and in the surrounding communities”.

So with the idea of Sometime being limited— often we as activists, or advocates, or just people, live as if there will always be a Sometime. We believe that in the future we will do all those things we have wanted and intended to do, for years. It is a fact for each of us that sometime is limited, whether in months or years, we are here a finite time to do all that we care to do.

So in the interest of LAHR and the people we serve, I invite you to not wait for sometime, but join LAHR or renew your membership now. Don’t wait to be asked to become involved in a project to advance the well being of LGBT people and all who care about equality. Don’t wait for sometime to write a letter to the Mayor and thank her/or him for taking the lives of Lesbians, Gay men, and Bisexual/Transgender women and men seriously. And please dear reader, don’t wait to give your time and treasure in some way to insure progress towards all of us enjoying equality. So with this knowledge of sometime being limited, pledge to do those things that enrich your life and the lives of others.

After all our lives depend upon it…

Sincerely,

Penny Gardner, President

Now, I know that these pastors have claimed that they did not intend to promote violence against LGBT people. I know that in their eyes, they were simply articulating their theological beliefs and their understanding of the Bible. However, this understanding of the Bible is dangerous and it does lead to violence, hatred, and death. One must take responsibility for the actions that result from hateful words.

I think it is incredibly important that we pay attention to our words; it is so easy to make hateful generalizations, so easy to make malicious statements, so easy to offer ignorant assumptions. But these things lead to so much pain, that we cannot simply excuse irresponsible speech with the claim that we all have a right to say whatever is on our mind. Spring Ahead!

The Lansing Police Department prides itself on being a progressive department. I presented the idea that creating this position would be a progressive, positive step towards creating a community that is comfortable approaching the police department whether they are victims of crime, or they are seeking information about a safe place to live. There are only a couple of police departments in the State of Michigan that have LGBT Liaison positions. I explained that by uniting together, we can positively impact quality of life issues relating to the LGBT community.

In June 2010, nine months after that initial conversation, I received a telephone call asking me if I wanted to become the LGBT Liaison Officer. The position was presented as “in addition to your current job.” More work. No pay increase. Potential for negative repercussions. Hmmmm….
