At 5:30 a.m. on September 22, Glen Cove Fire Department received a call from Fire Com reporting a house fire at the corner of Glen Street and Elm Avenue. Initially, the police responded and called it a working house fire. First Assistant Chief Phil Grella was the first chief to arrive on the scene, followed by 3rd Assistant chier Marvin Tate. Shortly thereafter, Chief Joe Solomito arrived at the location taking over the command post.

Departments called on for mutual aid were Sea Cliff, Locust Valley, East Norwich and Oyster Bay Co #1, Glen- wood Fire Company FAST Team, Locust Valley

When firemen first arrived, the whole front of the building was engulfed in smoke with fire blowing out of the front of the building, Initially it was re- ported that two people lived in the house which turned out to not be true. Truck # 528 was the first engine to ar- rive. They hooked up to a hydrant and Sea Cliff Remembers 9/11 stretched lines for the first attack. Later Glen Coves #521 arrived and stretched their ladder to the roof of the building to vent the fire. Truck #521 and 524 also ar- rived. Departments called on for mutual aid were Sea Cliff, Locust Valley, East Norwich and Oyster Bay Co #1. Glen- wood Fire Company FAST Team was sent in to search the building. Later, Lo- cust Valley replaced the Glenwood fire- fighters. The fire was knocked down within an hour said Solomito. Fire Marshals arrived to search the build- ing. The fire is still under investigation said Chief Solomito. Solomite also said, “everyone who helped fighting the fire did a good job.”

Students, faculty and staff at Glen Head Elementary School gathered together for their annual Convocation Ceremony where a torch is passed from fifth graders to a new generation of kindergarteners. This signi- fies a tradition of welcome at Glen Head Elementary School. At the morning assembly, Principal Lori Nimmo welcomed everybody to an- other exciting year and introduced all of her new teachers and kindergarten students to a warm round of applause by the entire student body. Dressed in maroon and white (the school colors), everyone participated as the “Sunshine Kids” led the school in various well-known songs. Kindergarteners also had an opportunity to not only walk in to a wonderful round-of-applause by every- one in attendance, but sang a special song as well. To conclude, the teachers performed a song describing their favorite pastimes called “Jump In, Jump Out!” Each faculty member was dressed in clothing corre- sponding to their favorite activity!
